Learning Beliefs: The Waverly Park Community believes that:
- We must strive for high achievement, engaged learning time, focused
teaching and a positive, safe environment where all involved feel a strong
sense of belonging.
- Learning should be an adventure and will involve hard work.
- There must be fairness to access of programs for everyone.
- We will recognize and respect culture, heritage and individual differences.
- School should be a place where all can succeed, set attainable goals and
develop a wholesome yet realistic self-concept.
- Change is a constant in our society, therefore, flexibility, creativity and
innovation in thinking and problem solving is required to adapt and succeed
in our changing world.
- School is an extension of the home.
- It takes a whole community to raise a child
- Parents and teachers are partners who will collaborate to provide
opportunities for our students to:
Be a clear and effective communicator
Be a self-directed and life-long learner
Be a creative and practical problem solver
Be a responsible and involved citizen
Be a collaborative and quality worker
Be integrated and informed thinkers

ALPHABETICAL LISTING OF AREA OF INTEREST K-8
SPECIFIC MIDDLE YEAR’S SECTION IN THE BACK
Attendance - Students are expected to attend classes on a regular basis. Parents are asked to
inform the school in advance if they know students will be away. Please call the school if
your child is ill, our Call Back number is: 729-3256.
Bikes and/or Skateboards - Bicycles are brought to school at the
student’s own risk. Unfortunately as bicycles cannot always be
adequately watched, they are often open to theft and vandalism. All
bikes must be parked and locked to the bike racks located at various
locations around the school. Roller blades are discouraged from use at
the school – storage during the day is an issue for these items as well as
they can do damage to our paved playground area. Skateboards are not to be brought to
school.
Call Back - At approximately 9:00 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. teachers submit a list of students who
are absent from the classroom for no known reason. The parent/guardian is then contacted at
home or at work to see why the child is away from school. This system works most
effectively if the parent accepts the responsibility of notifying the school for their child’s
absence. In the event that the school must phone and we are unable to reach a parent at
home or at work, we then accept no further responsibility for the student’s attendance.
Canteen - Our school canteen is available most school days. It offers a small variety of fast
food/processed items, i.e.: (cup-a-soup), chocolate milk, etc. Staff and student volunteers
operate the canteen. This food option should not be considered an alternative to a good
nutritional lunch but rather as an occasional lunch/treat option.
Celebration of Learning – This event happens just prior to conferences in November &
March in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Student work is on display and it provides an
opportunity for parent and child to celebrate student growth over the term.
Cell Phones - Students are not to have cell phones at school. The office
phone is available for student use/emergencies.
Clinical Services - Our Clinical Services department is based in the Division Office. A
team of speech language pathologists, social workers and psychologists is available to assist
teachers and parents in assessment of student needs. Recommendations are made to develop
appropriate programs for individual students. To use this service a referral, which must be
signed by the parents, is completed for the student.
Due to a heavy workload these requests are prioritized. Parents of children requiring these
services are kept informed on a regular basis.
![Page 4: WAVERLY PARK SCHOOL HANDBOOK AND MIDDLE YEARS](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042619/58a02a9c1a28abb84a8c573e/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Clothing - The responsibility for personal dress and grooming rests primarily with students
and their parents. Clothing that is comfortable, clean and modest is most conducive to a
good educational climate. The following guidelines are observed at Waverly Park School:
A student’s appearance must not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
Clothing must be appropriate. Clothing may not emphasize alcohol, drugs, tobacco,
profanity, or anything in poor taste. Spaghetti strap tee shirts and bare mid-drifts are
not acceptable.
Jackets, hats must not be worn within the school building.
Dress and grooming may not create health or safety problems for the student or
others. Brandon School Division Policy 7004 details divisional dress code under
Student Conduct.
Communications –
1. Friday Folders: Information pertaining to your child’s class and the school in
general is disseminated each Friday in bright yellow folders to help create a routine
of what is upcoming and what needs to go back to the school on Monday.
Kindergarten & Grade 1 use a daily communication system.
2. Newsletters: A newsletter is distributed at the start of each month and posted on
the school website: www.brandonsd.mb.ca/waverly . Please take the time to read it
as it is one way of keeping informed about school events.
HARD COPIES ARE AVAILABLE BY REQUEST FROM THE OFFICE.
3. Field Trip Waivers (Acknowledgement of Risk Form): This form is sent home for
completion whenever a child participates in an extracurricular event outside the
typical routine of a regular school day. This includes all trips outside the City of
Brandon and events within the city. Field trips are planned in conjunction with the
various curriculum requirements and are meant to serve as an extension or
enrichment of such. A user fee may be requested depending on the event/activity, to
offset the cost of these outings.
Conferences/Reports/Teacher – Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences take place in
November & March. Student progress is shared and goal setting is discussed at this time.
Should concerns arise at other times please feel free to contact the school/your child’s
teacher at any time during the school year.
Counselor - We have a part-time counselor at the school. The counselor is here to provide
assistance to students with social and emotional issues. There are a number of reference
materials relating to counseling issues available in the Parent Resource Area.
Extra-Curricular Activities – With the support of volunteer coaches, Waverly promotes a
comprehensive co-curricular programs, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton,
cross country, track and field and others as the interest arises (Grades 4-8).
![Page 5: WAVERLY PARK SCHOOL HANDBOOK AND MIDDLE YEARS](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042619/58a02a9c1a28abb84a8c573e/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Internet Protocol and Computer Use – (Students must complete an Internet Use
Agreement – annually). Brandon School Division provides network access to students in
order that they may conduct research and facilitate communication skills.
The Division reserves the right to inspect student files and folders in order to ensure that
Appropriate Use Guidelines are being followed and to ensure system efficiency and
integrity.
Misuse of the Internet will result in loss of school computer privileges and possible
suspension.
Waverly Park School staff provides instruction and guidance in the wise use of network
resources. While every attempt will be made to monitor material being accessed, the
students may inadvertently access inappropriate or objectionable material. When such cases
occur, the students should immediately notify the nearest supervisor, so that appropriate
action may be taken.
IPODS, MP3 Players, Walkmans, etc. – These items are not to be brought to school.
Kindergarten – Currently operating as a full day, every other day program.
Lunch Program - Waverly Park offers a Parent Run Program. Open to all students
Grade K-8 in the winter months (November 1-March 31). Students in Grade 7 & 8 living
north of the tracks, west of 34th and south of Victoria are expected to go home for lunch in
the Fall (September 1-November 1) and Spring (April 1-June 30). All other students Grade
K-8 may access the program year round.
Lockers - All students are provided with lockers. Students are expected to keep them clean
and tidy. These lockers are school property, and therefore can be searched at any time.
Middle Year’s students should provide a lock for their lockers. BSD Policy #7008 and
#7023
Red Flag/Green Flag – Each entry door has a weather flag posted on the glass. If flag is
red students are to stay outside until bell time @ 8:40 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. If green weather
conditions are such that students are free to enter the school when they arrive and remain in
the lobby area until bell time.
Resource/Support Staff – Currently our support staff consist of either full or part-time staff
in the following positions: Resource, Counselor, Reading Recovery, Early Years Lit
Support, English as an Additional Language (EAL), High Ability Learner Enrichment
Programming (HALEP), Teacher/Librarian, Music (K-6), P.E. (K-8).
![Page 6: WAVERLY PARK SCHOOL HANDBOOK AND MIDDLE YEARS](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042619/58a02a9c1a28abb84a8c573e/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

Friday. Students are welcome into the school at 8:40 a.m. Announcements at 8:50 a.m.
Lunch 12:05 – 1:00 p.m. Classes resume at 1:05 p.m. Students dismissed at 3:20 p.m.
Optional Subjects for Grade 7 and 8
Basic French - is offered on a daily basis for all students in Grades 4-6. It becomes optional
in Grade 7 and 8. Students in the program will develop basic communication skills and will
acquire an understanding and appreciation of francophone cultures, as well as language-
learning strategies.
Historically, most students continue in the French program in Grade 7 and 8. Our non-
French students will receive a school-initiated program.
Industrial Arts(Shop) and/or Home Economics – All Grade 7 students
receive instruction in Home Economics, and Grade 8 students take
Shop one half day on the 6 Day Cycle. Students go to the schools that
have Shop and/or Home Economics facilities to complete their projects.
Parents are responsible for the student’s transportation to and from
class.
Band - is the other option students may choose to enhance their curriculum. The program
offers an excellent chance for students to learn a musical instrument even if they have had no
previous experience.
Opposite Band – Art or the “Arts” will be the main focus of those students not participating
in the Band program.
Jazz Band – this is a Brandon West program involving band students interested and capable
of furthering their musical talents in a smaller group setting. The
Jazz Band meets once a week in the evening at Waverly Park School
for most of the school year. Entrance is determined by the band
instructor and student interest. Participation has typically been
comprised of Grade 8 Band students.
Textbooks and/or Library Books - It is the students’ responsibility to take care of
textbooks and library books issued to them. Damaged or replacement costs are the
responsibility of the student/family checking the book out.
![Page 7: WAVERLY PARK SCHOOL HANDBOOK AND MIDDLE YEARS](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042619/58a02a9c1a28abb84a8c573e/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
MIDDLE YEARS (Grades 5-8)
This section gives an overview of activities geared for our Middle Years students.
Leadership Team – Currently our Leadership Team is open to all MY students Grade 5-8. We are
offering several different student leadership groups for students to become involved with in their
middle years. The groups are facilitated by a staff member and have a social responsibility
component in the hopes of fostering global awareness to the plight of others. Examples include:
Spread the Net, Going Green, We Day, Y Revolution, etc.
Enrichment Clusters –All MY students are involved through HALEP (high ability learner
enrichment programming). Various cluster topics are developed over the course of the year and
students select an area of interest and are given a period of time to try and develop a service or
product that benefits others during the cluster time.
Clubs –Currently Grade 5/6 are involved in various music clubs “Recorder – Orff” as well as Middle
Years Speech Choir.over the course of the year. Other clubs may be formed as interest warrants.
Dances - Our MY students have the opportunity to participate in up to three sock-hops over the
course of a school year.
Awards – Currently we have Student Recognition Shark Awards for all students in
MY. Recognition categories are reviewed each year and shared in the fall with all
MY students. Grade 8 students also have awards from the Rotary Club for
involvement in volunteering in the community, and the Whitecap award donated by
the First Baptist Church to the student(s) displaying outstanding Citizenship qualities
and Grade 8 proficiency awards to the girl and boy with the highest academic
standing in each Grade 8 class.
**Student Recognition is based on meeting criteria in five categories (Academic, Athletics, the
“Arts”, Participation, and Citizenship). All MY students receive information about these sought after
awards in the fall. ** SEE LAST TWO PAGES

MY section
Field Trips – Currently all MY classes are involved in a year end field trip. Participation on this trip
is earned through the behaviour and character demonstrated throughout the course of the school year.
A March Ski trip is also offered annually to students in Grade 5 to 8
Grade 8 Farewell - Our grade 8 farewell activities are determined in conjunction with our Grade 8
students. Past practice has been to hold the events the evening before the last day of school. An
informal ceremony is held at the First Baptist Church after school and a catered supper at the Victoria
Inn with a very brief program following. Grade 8 students receive their certificates and are not
required to be at school the next day. Annual decisions regarding the Farewell are held early in the
new year.
