From the Deputy Principal After School – Playgrounds and the Oval are Closed At 3pm, it is expected that all students with the exception of those attending after school care, will make their way home. If students are required to wait for pick up, we ask that they wait quietly. Recently, we have had an excessive amount of noise from students either waiting to be picked up, or are waiting as parents are catching up with each other. Please be aware after 3pm, all playgrounds including the oval are closed. We respectfully ask that if you are within the school grounds, please ensure your child is not playing on the equipment, oval or running around school buildings. Uniform Shop Opening Hours The uniform shop is now open Mondays from 8:00am to 9:30am. To purchase any uniform items the new website will be up and running later this week. www.whssuniformshop.com.au. In the interim, you can still use the Quickcliq online order. Crazy Colour Disco Thank you to our P&C, and the many parents who assisted in running the event last Friday. We also thank Boondall Police Liaison Officers who were involved in our NAIDOC week and also joined us at parade to present certificates to the students who performed at the station’s NAIDOC celebration, during the holidays. Curriculum News Supporting your child’s learning.

The key components of reading are integrated within the learning areas and subjects of the Australian Curriculum. They are delivered at school through teaching practices of explicit instruction, practice and feedback. Parents and carers also play a vital part in supporting their children to read.

Children’s literacy and numeracy development can be improved when parents encourage learning through everyday activities. Modelling literacy and numeracy behaviours helps children recognise the value of these skills.

What can you do to help support your child's reading skills? Try the tips or activities that will feature in the Term 3 newsletters.

• Model reading Let your child see you reading, read to yourself and read to your child – often.

• Take the lead Start reading series books together, choosing more difficult books as time goes by. Share the reading with your child and encourage them to read a page at a time, or a paragraph or the titles.

• Keep sharing Reading books to your child that are more complex than their reading ability exposes them to rich vocabulary, complex concepts and experiences beyond their reality.

• What do you think…? Encourage your child to predict what might happen in the story, ask them ‘What do you think will happen to….?’, ‘What do you think would happen if..?’ After reading, ask questions that help your child join all the information to make judgements, generalisations or conclusions. Ask them why they think those things.

• Spot the patterns Draw attention to any rhyming words (even if they are spelt differently), together make oral lists of as many rhyming words you can, write them, talk about the different patterns, for example, pear, bear, there, their.

• And, action! Encourage your child to use expression, tone, volume and pace when reading. Sometimes you can turn it into a performance or you could record it on your phone or device.

Always: Encourage and praise Reading should be enjoyable for you and your child. Always encourage their attempts and praise their efforts. Resources:

For an extra challenge, make it waterproof to protect our books. If you do not have a planning page yet, they are available at the library desk in the green basket.

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS

In weeks 3 and 4 we are continuing to focus on our school expectations of Be Safe and Be Respectful. Week 3: Be Safe / Be Respectful – Respect others’ personal space and property At Wavell Heights State School, we value our community and encourage a respectful atmosphere between all students, staff, parents and wider organisations. School is a social environment and student learning is dependent on relationships. It is important for students to get along with each other as well as build relationships with teachers. Positive, supportive and respectful relationships are essential, because students need to feel safe to make mistakes within the learning environment (John Hattie, Visible Learning). Positive relationships between students are essential and are developed through a culture of mutual respect. Some ways students can demonstrate this to each other is by: - Understanding that each person has his or her own personal space that needs to be respected - Following the High 5 – If another person has asked to be left alone, then that needs to be followed - Using own equipment respectfully - Asking nicely to use/borrow others’ equipment and return it undamaged Week 4: Be Safe / Be Respectful – Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself In this week, we would like students to think about the following question; What makes me stressed/ annoyed/ angry? All animals including humans experience stress or anger at different points in time. When people are in highly stressed states, they tend to resort to automated extreme responses, which may include violence or running away (Berry Street, 2018). Heightened stress/ anger responses reduce learning capacity and can result in poor relations with others and behaviour issues. Each person differs in what makes us stressed and how we respond to it, which is why it is important for students to recognise their body’s signs of stress/ anger. Once students are able to recognise triggers of stress/anger in their life, appropriate self-regulating and calming strategies can be developed. These preventative measures help students to return to the Ready to Learn zone before escalating physical behaviour issues occur. You can help at home by discussing where students’ might be feeling stress in their body and how they can self-help to de-escalate/ calm down.
