W.A.V.E. Day on the Bay 2019 &

57th Annual Navy Cup

Events of World War II to be commemorated

Over the next four years: 75th Anniversary of

the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II

December 7, 2016 – 75th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII

Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, 2020. “World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large – and for a very good reason” said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. “It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American.” America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy.

NYCP Nominating Committee Chair P/C Bill Clark The nominating committee requests the names of candidates for the 2020 Bridge team. With this request they urge each member to view serving on the Bridge as your personal contribution to the success of the club. Time table:

• Candidates that have come forth will be presented at the October 3rd General Membership meeting.

• Nominations from the floor will be accepted at that time.

• Elections for 2020 will take place at the November 7th General Membership meeting and again nominations will be open briefly from the floor at the meeting.

• Installation of the 2020 Bridge team will take place at the Commodore's Ball on Wednesday, December 4th.

Membership participation is the key to the overall success of the club - after all - we are a total voluntary organization. Please give serving on the Bridge a top priority. Thank you.

OCTOBER 2019

Navy won the Cup!

From the Helm: We have much to celebrate this month since winning the Navy Cup on September 15 and providing much of the support for the Wounded American Veterans Event (WAVE) on September 7 at PYC. Navy Yacht Club is busy and setting a great example for those interested in sailing on Pensacola Bay. Thanks to all who came out for Navy Cup. We had 9 of the 13 boats which checked in for the PHRF races on September 14! Great showing by so many members. And on Sunday, we had a full team to race Sunfish, Laser and Hunters on Bayou Grande to complete the competition. PYC put up a great comeback on Sunday, but our domination on Saturday carried the day. Well Done, NAVY!! The proposed slate of Bridge and Officer nominees for 2020 will be presented at the October meeting with the opportunity for additional nominations from the floor. Voting on the slate will occur at the November meeting. I am excited about the growth in members and especially those who have gotten involved with the sailing program. We have more than 140 members as of September, a new high since I joined the Club in 2015. Ellen Costigan has asked that we donate the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales to the "Blanket Barrancas" effort to place a wreath on every headstone in Barrancas Cemetery lead by local Kiwanis Clubs and Veteran organizations. The wreaths are placed on the headstones at Christmas to decorate and honor all those buried at Barrancas

Cemetery aboard NAS Pensacola. Right now, only about 12,000 of the 49,000 headstones receive a wreath each December. The goal is to eventually reach 100% coverage. If you are interested in assisting Ellen on this project, please contact her at [email protected] SAVE THE DATE: This year's Commodores Ball will be held on Wednesday, December 4th at the Hilton Garden Inn-Airport/Medical Center off Airport Blvd starting at 1800. Invitations will be mailed later this month. Cost will be same as last year. We are excited about this new venue, including the opportunity to reserve a room at the hotel to make the night extra special. Here is the information on booking a reservation: When booking reservations, please have your guests call the hotel directly to book their room under Navy Yacht Club or the group code YACHT and this will allow them to get the discounted rate $89+tax. This rate is available for our standard rooms with 1 king bed or 2 queen beds. (850)479-89 Fair Winds and Following Seas - until we see you again.

WAVE 2019

Last year Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad arrived in his

wheelchair, but this year he walked in and then shared his

amazing story of progress with the assembly of Wounded

American Veterans and their families at the WAVE 2019

event Saturday. His primary message was, "Don't let

anyone tell you what you can't do!" As he has

demonstrated, you are the only one who should make that

decision!

Following his address, he and his wife Amy enjoyed

"A Day on the Bay" along with the assembly of Veterans,

families, and Active Duty "Boat Buddies" on board to

provide stability.

The WAVE fleet returned to enjoy Lunch under the

Tent with live music performed by Jim Andrews.

The Navy Yacht Pensacola and Pensacola Yacht Club

annual project was considered to be a great success.

2019 WAVE Boat Volunteers

A much deserved thank you goes out to all of you who

provided your sail and power boats last Saturday in

support of WAVE 2019.

We had more boats participating this year and were

able to accommodate everyone who desired to join the

on-the-water experience.

Thanks also for your patience, skill and seamanship in

bringing back all who left the dock! Success!! We heard

nothing but superlatives from the Vets, families and

others about your hospitality and the fun they had

enjoying our beautiful Pensacola Bay. You are great

representatives of the best our local sailing and boating

community has to offer.

We will be doing W.A.V.E. 2020 on Saturday,

September 12, 2020. Please make note in your calendar

and expect an email from the Committee early next

August.

Welcome Aboard

September Membership Meeting at the Crow’s

Nest – Sept 5th – “Fall Bounty Buffet”

GALLEY BITES By Julie Connerley

This month we are highlighting the culinary tastes of Bob and Renee Sutton. Since Renee, the family's chef, was unable to attend the September meeting, Bob chose to bring two of her favorite soups, compliments of Olive Garden, 5037 Bayou Blvd., Pensacola. Not one, but two soup choices to delight the palettes of true Italian food aficionados, were ordered through the restaurant's convenient take-out menu. "We don’t get to that side of town very often but when we do we like to eat there," Bob said. First up was the Zuppa Toscana, with spicy Italian sausage, fresh kale and russet potatoes in a creamy broth. It lists 220 calories per serving.

The next one was Pasta e Fagioli ingredients include white and red beans, ground beef, fresh tomatoes and tubetti pasta in a savory broth. It boasts just 150 calories per serving.

NYCP is fortunate to have so many members who actively participate in the monthly meetings--either by cooking or ordering something to share with an always-hungry group. Thank you Bob and Renee! Bon appétit!

even if the driver has a DoD ID. If you arrive at the gate

and are told you need a sponsor, you can call 384-4575

facilitate entrance to the base. If you anticipate entering

the base and do not have the proper credentials, please

furnish a list of crew members ten days in advance.

We look forward to providing a great regatta with lots

of participation.

Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 8 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship…thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn’t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 3 offshore races* only in 2019. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship and would need to race in only 2 of the 3 to qualify. There’s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc.

Gulf Yachting Association (GYA)

On October 19-20, Mobile Bay's Buccaneer Yacht Club will host the 20th annual GYA Fish Class Championship. The Fish Class was GYA's original inter-club competition boat, designed in 1919 by Southern Yacht Club member, Rathbone DeBuys. It was later replaced by the Flying Scot, and more recently by the Viper 640. Buccaneer will supply the boats--yacht clubs supply the teams. The trophy is described as "one of the most valuable perpetual trophies owned by the GYA." This event is one of eight one-design championships sanctioned by the GYA. Following the untimely death of John Curren, friends who admired his untiring efforts to promote the sport of yachting among clubs created the original sterling silver replica of the 1919 Fish Class sailboat in 1961. When Hurricane Camille devastated the Gulf Coast in 1969, the trophy was lost, except for the sails were which were salvaged intact. The Fish Class saw declining participation over the next several years, but then a resurgence of interest in restoring old Fish sloops, and construction of new ones breathed life back into this one-design racing class. At the same time, the GYA elected to establish the first-ever GYA Fish Class Championship to be sailed annually at Buccaneer. Contributions to the GYA Foundation provided funds to restore the trophy which is held by the winning yacht club for one year following the regatta. Keeper trophies are also awarded. We are excited to announce that NYCP is in the process of forming a team to compete for the John G. Curren Fish Class Trophy and wish them good luck!

NOTABLE SAILORS There have been many notable sailors in the GYA – those who have won national and world championships, and who have qualified and/or gone to the Olympics – Marcus Eagan, John Dane, Zak Fanberg, Ricky Welch, Jackson Benvenuitti, Amy Kleinschrodt, Anne Edwards – just to name a few. We’re hoping to include in the 100th Anniversary book a chapter on our notable sailors. I have information on some of the sailors from way back – Gene Walet, Buddy Friedrichs, Gilbert Gray, Andrew Labano, and others – but very little or no information on recent (as in from about 1950 to date) sailors. IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR CLUB (past or present) WHO SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS CHAPTER OF THE BOOK, I need: their name, a sailing resume (from which I can pull the information needed) and, where possible, PHOTOS (either a head shot, a shot of them on the water at an event). You can send the information to me or have the individual send it to me via e-mail at [email protected]

We seriously don’t want to overlook anyone, but we need your help!! Please do not assume I have the needed information on any individual. To the contrary, please assume I have nothing on anyone. I would much rather have too much information from which to choose as opposed to not enough.

If you need to send original photos to me because you don’t have scanning capabilities or for whatever reason, I PROMISE TO RETURN THEM TO YOU! Mailing address is: 506 Trace Crossing, Daphne AL 36526 Many thanks, Cathy Cromartie

Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: www.navypnsyc.org for all of the yacht club news such as upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact info. Also check out the photos from the Navy Yacht Club activities throughout the year. If you have a picture to submit …be sure to let us know. Have you taken any digital photos lately? Maybe you have some photos from a recent trip or photos of the kids or grandkids? Saved any important documents lately, like a 1099R, a birth certificate, or the warrantee for that new TV? Whether you download photos or any other files, you need to be sure you save them to your computer so you can print them, or just view them when you have the time. But, remember, computers do crash, and it may happen to you. When they do crash there goes all those important photos or documents. To ensure you don't lose any valuable files, make sure you back them up regularly to the cloud, or to an external hard drive. A one or a two Terra Byte hard drive can be purchased for fewer than one hundred dollars and set up to automatically back up your files on a regular basis. It is money well spent, especially if it saves those pictures and documents that are so important to you.

Who else in our Navy Yacht Club family has an interesting moment in history here on the Pensacola Naval Air Station?

Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long

prestigious history:

• Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931

• Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the

trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by

request of the base, part of the 1964 50th

Anniversary Celebration of NASP • *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over

50 years was only possible because of the

collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP • *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation

Regatta that commemorated the 75th

Anniversary of Naval Aviation

• *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept

in female competitive sailing to Pensacola

Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs

• *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity

to compete on the water at a minimal

membership cost • *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have'

given so much for our freedom. The

originator of Wounded American Veterans

Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida

Commodores Association. This "Day on

the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs

• NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial

Youth Sailing Scholarship • In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched

through vintage GOSPORTs, and

collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the

following NYCP sailors, who are most likely

our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931

*William Masland winged in 1931

*H. Starves winged in 1931

*J.H. Smith winged in 1932

We have been entrusted with a rich legacy,

for which we should feel honored to protect.

Right now only about 14,000 of the 49,000 headstones receive a wreath each December. The goal is to eventually reach 100% coverage. Thanks for your help.

Where in the W rld is the NYCP Burgee?

This is a variation of the “Where’s Waldo” drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically, members of the club can submit pictures - to the Foghorn Editor or an NYCP board member - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club the Foghorn and selection of the pictures which are unique and of interest to the club members will be in the running for an award at the end of the year. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate.

Where in the World is the NYCP Burgee?? By Julie B. Connerley Husband's "bucket list" destination was Iceland, which we visited in May. Known as the Land of Fire and Ice, the otherworldly landscape was shaped and carved by both volcanoes and glaciers. And, it is still evolving. Slightly smaller than Kentucky, the country is Europe's least populated country, with little more than 300,000--a majority of whom believe in Elves and Trolls. Hydro and geothermal energy account for 85% of its power. It boasts over 200 named waterfalls, including the most powerful one in Europe. It has the most active volcanoes in the world (some underneath glaciers), with eruptions averaging every 4 years. The iconic Icelandic horses are direct descendants of the Vikings who discovered and named Iceland. They have two more gaits than any other breed and remain purebred by prohibiting import of other breeds. Perhaps its most geographically unique feature is that it is one of only two places on earth where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates above the earth's surface. It also boasts some of the world's few geysers (an Icelandic word). In the year 930 AD, Europe's first parliament was established in Iceland's Pingvellir National Park, now a World UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2016 the UN ranked Iceland as the 9th most developed country in the world. Crime is incredibly low. Police officers do not wear guns and the nation has no standing army. The Global Peace Index ranks Iceland as the most peaceful country in the world. We cruised around the country with multiple ports of call in every region. It was the last adventure we shared together and was everything and more one would expect of such an extraordinary destination. The attached NYCP burgee photos showcase a small glimpse of the Land of Fire and Ice.

Dynjandi Waterfall, the largest in the West Fjords region, has 7 cascades, like a tiered wedding cake or bride's veil and is considered one of Iceland's most impressive waterfalls.

The easiest way to reach the top of the 4,600 feet high Snaefellsjokull Glacier on top of an active volcano is on a snow cat. Novelist Jules Verne chose this glacier to be the entrance "to the center of earth."

Located in the popular Golden Circle, The Strokkur geyser bursts upwards 66 feet every 5-8 minutes.

Iceland's best-known natural wonder, Gullfoss Waterfall was almost irreparably changed by power plant plans. But in the 1920s a young woman, Iceland's first environmentalist, championed its natural state. In 1979 Gullfoss and its environs were designated as a nature preserve.

Kirkjufell (Church Mountain), at 1500 feet above sea level, is said to be the most photographed mountain in Iceland due to its' dramatic formation and isolated coastal location.

The pathway between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates leads to the site of the country's first parliament inside Pingvellir National Park.

Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island off Iceland's southwestern coast of Vestmannaeyjar, was buried under the erupting Eldfell volcano in January 1973. No lives were lost, but with 12 feet of lava covering 400 homes and buildings, it took incredible determination to "replant" the land by residents who refused to abandon their lifestyle.

PENSACOLA TO HOST PREMIERE SAILING

LEAGUE EXHIBITION SERIES

Make An Early New Year Resolution To Be In Pensacola,

Florida

If the trendsetters are right that September truly is the new January – as far revisiting those resolutions made at the beginning of the New Year – then why not make an early resolution now to be in Pensacola, Florida, in January of 2020. That is when the Premiere Sailing League USA (PSL) will debut stadium sailing on Pensacola Bay during the PSL Winter Exhibition Series between Jan. 3 and April 5.

The PSL Winter Exhibition Series will consist of a pre-series test regatta followed by four invitational regattas. Teams can charter a boat from the supplied fleet of identical RS21 keelboats for the racing which will take place on courses set just off the Pensacola waterfront at either Plaza de Luna or the nearby Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park. Spectators can watch the teams compete in multiple exhibition stadium style races directly in front of the festive venues. Dates have been chosen to coordinate with other activities in the two parks to introduce stadium sailing to the non-sailing public. The first PSL Winter Exhibition is scheduled for January 3-5, 2020, off Plaza de Luna at the foot of historic South Palafox Place adjacent to the Pensacola Marina. Not coincidentally, the regatta takes place during the 12th Night Mardi Gras Kick-off celebration taking place throughout downtown Pensacola. Subsequent PSL Winter Exhibitions are

currently planned for Jan. 31-Feb 2, March 6-8 and April 3-5, 2020. (Note final dates may be subject to change)

For each event, practice racing will be held on Friday from the Pensacola Yacht Club in the downtown Sanders Beach Community. Then on Saturday and Sunday the six to 12 teams will race short course, fast paced flights, with up to 20 races per day, to determine the winner. The racing will follow the format of the events that will be offered in 2022, the inaugural year of the full national season of the League. Spectators on shore will be treated to race analysis presented by sailing broadcaster and America’s Cup commentator Tucker Thompson, who will make stadium sailing come to life for spectators.

“We are excited by the City of Pensacola’s response to this event,” said PSL President Benjamin Klatzka. “Not only will Pensacola be the venue for the League’s 2020 Exhibition Series, the City and Pensacola Yacht Club will be the Southern headquarters for the PSL. The bay’s consistent breeze and flat water are ideal for inshore, stadium style racing, and off the water the area offers sailors and their families everything from great hotels, restaurants, beaches and shops making Pensacola both a great sailing and vacation destination.”

Mayor Grover Robinson, and Pensacola Yacht Club’s Board of Directors, have put their full support behind the PSL Winter Exhibition Series and future events on Pensacola Bay.

“Pensacola is rich in maritime history,” said Mayor Robinson. “We look forward to partnering with the Premier Sailing League USA and helping provide a platform where sailors from different backgrounds can compete in a stadium sailing competition encouraging new spectators and participants to enjoy the sport. As the league grows, we in Pensacola look forward to being the permanent southern base for the PSL.” Visit Pensacola President Steve Hayes and Pensacola Sports President and CEO Ray Palmer have been onboard with the Mayor

and his staff since the concept was first presented to the city and the Escambia County tourism professionals. The Pensacola/Escambia County tourism promotional arm at VisitPensacola.com, and the sports marketing team at Pensacola Sports, are committed to helping make the exhibition series, and all future events on Pensacola Bay, a success in every way. The Premiere Sailing League USA will debut its concept for an organized, national fleet racing league during the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Md., which runs from October 10-14, 2019.
