Welcome to The Gathering 2013!

Wow! What a year! The up and down feelings of 2012 haveleft those of us at Waukaru a little disheveled. The droughtforced us to get creative and pull out all of the tricks. We wentinto winter with less stored feed and more mouths to feed thanever before; but, the cowherd responded amazingly to the task.The high price for feeders, fats, and cows made the droughteasier to swallow.

Many customers of Waukaru have sold calves higher thanever. Waukaru genetics topped more feeder calf sales acrossthe country than ever, including some of the nation’s largestmarkets. Now is the time to capture as many saleable poundsas possible. Waukaru genetics can do that, and thedocumentation is in the catalog. Efficient, feasible, saleableweight is the primary revenue source for any beef enterprise.Waukaru has worked for decades upon decades to securerapid development of our product. We expect the cattle tothrive on feedstuffs that are on the lower end of the input costspectrum. Crop residues, gin trash, distillers’ by-products andthe like are imperative to control feed costs, and it takesdecades of genetic selection to design a beast that excels inthat environment.

Alongside this growth, mature cow size has to be controlled.The daughters of the bulls selling in the next few pages will beimportant to any repopulation effort. The Waukaru basedfemales have proven to be some of the most valuable assetson the farm or ranch. Their ability to forage in good times andbad and yet produce economical, convenient, saleable poundsis the job they are designed to do.

Compared to the breed average, Waukaru genetics have farreaching EPD’s. These are not average Shorthorns. In the late1950’s, Waukaru began performance testing in cooperationwith Purdue University. When the American ShorthornAssociation was ready to produce EPD’s in the early 1980’s,Waukaru had reams of historical data ready to submit. Large,complete contemporary groups are an integral part of gettingaccurate genetic predictors, and every hand that has carriedthe baton has known that. Waukaru has always included thedata in selection decisions, and selecting from the largest,most predictable dataset has made for impressive EPD’s today.Now some of our customers report 50, 75, even 100 poundsof additional weaning weight! Thatcomputes to over $100 per calf; or, ifa bull produces 150 calves in alifetime, that is an additional $15,000per Waukaru bull turned out!

We have put together a large group of 464daughters in the breeding herd and plan on adding more. Glossary & Use of Shorthorn EPDs and Dollar Value Traits

Calving Ease Direct (CE, DIR)The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers is Calving Ease Direct. As the name implies, this measure predicts the abilityof a sire to produce calves that come out easily, without assistance. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, the more positive numbersare the more desirable. For example, a bull with a CE of -2.5 is expected to sire 4.0% more assisted births than a bull with a CE, DIR of+1.5 (1.5 plus -2.5 = 4.0). Put simply, if the bull with a +1.5 CE, DIR EPD sires 100 calves and 1 birth requires assistance, then theexample bull should sire 5 calves that need assistance at birth.Calving Ease Maternal (MCE, DTRS)If you plan to retain daughters from a particular bull, then Calving Ease Maternal EPD becomes more of a priority. This measure oftenhas an inverse relationship to Calving Ease Direct. Cattle breeding logic tells us that when calves come easier, the natural pelvic area ofthe females may also get smaller. As a result, daughters from a sire known for Calving Ease may be less desirable due to this antagonism.Maternal Calving Ease is basically one generation further than Calving Ease Direct. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, CEMreflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters that calve unassisted. As a result, a more positive number is more desirable. Although CE, DIRand CEM, DTRS values tend to be antagonistic, a bull that is positive for both CE and CEM should be given strong consideration if onewants to market bulls suitable for use on first-calf heifers and sell or retain replacement females that can calve on their own.Birth Weight (BW)This trait needs little introduction, but the emphasis on Birth Weight can be overdone. At the most basic level, Birth Weight is nothingmore than an indicator trait for calving ease. For decades, the weight of a calf at birth was the only hard number collected by breeders totell bull buyers what they could expect at calving time. Economically, over-selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrongdirection; cattle still sell by the pound. The most important figure is the number of live calves that hit the ground with no assistancefrom a ranch hand. Still, threshold values for BW are on the minds of many bull and female buyers. In the Shorthorn breed, bullssuitable for use on heifers need to be significantly less than breed average. Use BW EPD in conjunction with Calving Ease Direct (CE).Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone, and even frame score play a significant role indetermining birth weight and calving ease.Weaning Weight (WW)Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. By itself, Weaning Weight EPDhas limited use, merely pounds of calves attributed to the sire or dam of interest. However, when used in conjunction with other traits(CEM, BW, YW, & Carcass), WW gets much more significant. Within the 2011 sire summary, the top 5% of the Shorthorn breedshould wean calves approximately 24.7 lbs. heavier on average than the bottom 5% of the breed. More importantly, bulls within the siresummary that may have identical WW EPDs can be drastically different for traits like CE and Carcass Marbling. As a result, finding asire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element tosuccess.MilkThe dairy industry measures the success of a cow in pounds of milk produced and the nutritional attributes or fat content of the milk.Research has shown that the nutritional quality of milk offered by a beef cow is just as important as the amount produced in generatingheavier calves. Since beef cattle breeders don’t milk our cows, success is measured in pounds of calf attributed to milk at weaning. Abull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans theheaviest calf every year, does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf could beattributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of other environmental factors eliminated in the EPD calculation (age ofdam, birth date, etc.). Shorthorn breed average Milk EPD (sires) is +2.1. In environments with severely limited feed resources, MilkEPD can be too high, having a negative impact on rebreeding rate. However, in most cases, keep moving Milk EPD in a positivedirection.Total Maternal (TMat, TOTM)Mathematically, Total Maternal EPD is nothing more than ½ of WW plus Milk EPD. For example, the 2011 Sire Summary has breedaverage (sires) WW at +13.8 and Milk at +2.1. If you take ½ of 13.8 (6.9) and add 2.1, you land at breed average (sires) TMat (TOTM)of +9.0. This trait simplifies the process of selecting a bull to produce replacement females by using one number that expresses a cow’sability to bring in a heavier calf.Yearling Weight (YW)Yearling Weight EPD has long been the “end all” measure of performance. However, single-trait selection for YW can lead to far moreserious problems, especially at they relate to bottom-line profit. Mature size or frame score must be monitored when selecting a bull forperformance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. In other words, a maturebull that weighs 2,700 pounds cannot naturally breed an 800-pound yearling heifer. As you select bulls that exceed breed average YW of+24.8, be careful of CE, BW, and WW. You may talk yourself into a very labor intensive calving season and more expensive feed bill.$ CEZ ($ Calving Ease)This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence oflive calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a goodmeasure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaningand yearling performance.$F ($ Feedlot)Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sirewill be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the femaleside, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity,reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability.$BMI ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the Britishcow base (Angus, red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-compositebulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductiveefficiency and cow longevity.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or check payable to Waukaru Farms Inc. Settlement to be made with clerk immediately followingthe sale before cattle are removed from sale site.

Billed Accounts:All billed accounts are due within 10 days following the date of the sale. At 10 days, a 2% service charge will be added to the unpaid balance andan additional 2% will be added every 30 days thereafter unless previous arrangements have been made with Waukaru Farms Inc.

Insurance:Insurance will be available for your purchase at the sale through Harding & Harding. Let the clerks know of your needs at the settlement desk.Genetic Defects:All bulls selling are free of any known genetic defects.Health:Each bull will be represented by a valid health certificate. The herd at Waukaru is Federally Certified Brucellosis Free and Accredited Free of TB.Also, every animal 24 months and older at Waukaru tests negative for Johnes Disease. All bulls selling are up to date on vaccinations anddeworming. Waukaru uses a modified live vaccine.

Breeding Status:All bulls have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam performed by the Food Animal Clinic of Rensselaer, Indiana.Semen Rights:All bulls sell in their entirety. Waukaru does retain in-herd semen use on every bull. If Waukaru decides to use any of the bulls, it will collect semenat the Sellers cost at a time that is convenient to the owner and with the best safety and care for the bull. All revenues generated by selling semenwould be of the new owners, not Waukaru.

Liability: Each bull will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by Waukaru for a reasonable amount of time. Neither Waukaru nor any ofits employees can be responsible for any accidents, but will make every effort possible to provide for the safety of those attending.

Bidding Procedure:This is a private treaty sale. All bulls will be individually priced on March 15, 2013. The price list can be provided via e-mail, fax, mail, orWaukaru.net. After March 15, 2013 Waukaru accept bids on any bulls in the offering. If more than one party selects the same bull, bids will beaccepted in increments of additional $250. The bidding procedure will continue until 12:00 p.m. central time. The bulls will be closed out one ata time starting with highest priced bulls followed by the oldest. A bull will remain “open” until all bidding ceases. The party with the running upbid will be allowed to place a bid on any remaining open bulls.
