WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2020
PASTORAL MESSAGE Jerry was an interesting person who seemed a bit larger than life. He grew up on a street not too far from my house. There are two things I remember about him. He rode a motorcycle, a Harley Davidson, and if he saw a group of young people, he’d often stop and show it off a bit which impressed many of the kids in the neighborhood. As impressive as the motorcycle was, he wasn’t the only person who owned a Harley. It was his job as a disc jockey at a local AM radio station that made him pretty close to being a star and a legend in the community. It was a small radio station that only reached a few towns within
its radius, and most days he was the only radio personality in the studio. At the top of the hour he was the newscaster and meteorologist, then he was spinning records, playing the hits of the early seventies by artists such as Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, the Jackson 5, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and other famous pop acts. Sometimes he’d interview local musical groups, usually high school kids with garage bands, and he’d play a few pieces of their music which I’m sure made them feel famous. Occasionally he’d play something a bit more controversial which would get people talking, but the standard pop and dance hits were the usual fare. One day I recall he was at morning Mass. I was in the fifth grade and was assigned to serve the Mass as an altar boy. He was with his family so most likely the Mass was being offered for a relative. I’m not sure if the priest who celebrated the Mass was the pastor, Fr. Albert Fairbanks who was a wonderful priest but had a formidable appearance or Fr. Joe Kane, who was a gifted priest that you could best describe as a gentle giant. Due to his height he towered over everyone which could be intimidating, but he was kind-hearted and would do anything for anyone. If either Fr. Fairbanks or Fr. Kane asked you to do something, you would not say no. “Yes, father” was always the correct response and that was the response they were used to hearing, until that morning when after Mass, Jerry the motorcycle riding celebrity DJ, was asked to be a lector. One of the perks of being an altar server at the 7 AM daily Mass was the reward after Mass. My father, who attended daily Mass and was a lector, always stopped for a cup of coffee and a donut at a local donut shop, and if I served, I got to go with him and have a donut and cup of hot chocolate. I felt pretty grown up sitting on a stool and listening to town goings on, even though I had no idea of what anyone was talking about, but I liked to think I was part of the conversation. I rarely said anything and if I did decide I had an opinion, as soon as my mouth would open, my father would give me a look which all but said “keep quiet and finish your donut.” After that daily Mass, who stopped in the donut shop but Jerry, the motorcycle riding DJ. He told my father how he was asked to be a lector and in no uncertain terms made it known there was no way he was going to wake up early and do the readings at Mass. He said he usually worked late, had other obligations, and he only went to Mass that morning because his mother wanted him at Mass. When he left the donut shop that morning, there was no question in the mind of anyone who heard the conversation that Jerry was not going to lector at Mass. He did change his mind. If he didn’t change his mind, there would not have been a story, but before we get to the rest of the story, it might be good to look at this week’s Gospel. In this weekend’s Gospel we hear of a man who has two sons. In the Bible, “two sons” is not always the best thing. Adam and Eve learned this with Cain and Abel. Isaac had two sons, Jacob and Esau, who did not get along. The story of the Prodigal Son begins with the words “A man had two sons” and this week we meet a man who has two sons. That being said, the story is not so much about conflict between two sons as it is about comparing the response of two people asked to do the same task. The two sons are asked to work in the vineyard, one says no, but changes his mind, the other says yes but never goes to work. Neither responds ideally but of the two, the son who changes his mind is the one who is viewed as more favorable. Saying “yes” is the proper response to what God asks of us, but the yes needs to be whole-hearted and enthusiastic. Jerry agreed to lector one day a week, but he did more than just lector. As he started reading at Mass, he became excited about his ministry. When it came to the Bible, he was on fire. He knew the major stories like the call of Abraham, Moses and the Ten Commandments, the stories involving King David and the lessons we could learn from stories like Queen Esther or the writings of the prophet Daniel. He knew the lesser known stories such as we find in the Book of Judith and Tobit. He began participating in Bible studies which in the mid 1970’s was new for Catholics, and he started teaching Confirmation classes. When he said yes, it was more than just a yes, it was a life changing yes. When God extends an invitation, it often turns out to be better than we could ever expect, more life giving than we ever knew it could be and can be life changing. So, when God asks, as the father asked his sons in this week’s story, we are called to say yes, but to recall if we say yes, it should be an enthusiastic response. If we have said no, chances are God is still extending the invitation, and our yes can lead to great possibilities we have never imagined. Fr. Tim Kearney

SACRIFICIAL GIVING Sacred Heart Parish & Saint Patrick Parish
Saint Patrick Parish has had secure online giving since 2013, with over 100 parishioners giving regularly. At this time we en-courage BOTH parishes to use this site for easily making their donations. Sacred Heart parishioners can enter a note online (special intention) that they want donations to go to Sacred Heart and we have the capability of transferring that money to the proper parish account. The link to sign up for online giving is: www.osvonlinegiving.com/1470.
There are baskets located immediately at the entrance to the church for your weekly offertory contributions. We continue to encourage parishioners to sign up for online giving, or we invite you to mail in or drop off envelopes to the secure mailbox outside the Collaborative office door.
Please continue to prayerfully consider how you can continue to offer your weekly financial support to our parishes.
In this week's psalm, David is not only asking for forgiveness and direction, but also for God's will. I don't know about you, but so many times, I optimistically pray for my will. Often I forget to acknowledge the goodness of a God who knows how to fix what I have broken; the God who knows His creation best and how He is working His plan. I try to remain hopeful, however, that what's best for me will always win over what I think is best for me. Is there a difference between being optimistic and being hopeful though? I think so. Optimism seems to be grounded in our humanness, a judgement based on our perception of our own abilities and activities. Hope, on the other hand, has the divine attached to it. Hope is assurance based on the nature of God. Optimists expect something to happen, and usually within a certain time frame. Even the biggest optimist can be disappointed. Those who hope in God know something is already happening, but not when it will become evident. Hopeful people are never disappointed. I don't think God is an optimist, but rather eternally hopeful. God never fails to hope in our ability to turn to Him and pay back in full the gift of our existence through eternal praise and thanksgiving. We may not actually do it... but He knows we can! He keeps loving us and giving us the grace to do it again and again until our choice is sealed in death. Jesus teaches us that we must love one another as He does because we share in God's divine life. We can't give up on anyone whom God is still choosing to will into existence; that would be to give up on God. The same holds true for ourselves. When we are brought low in the world because of our sins, we tend to think that what has happened to us through our own choices can only be reversed through our own efforts. Lucky for us, God has unlimited resources! We just have to ask Him to use them. May we measure everything by God, whose borders are out of sight, and live in the hope of His mercies in our lives.
This Week’s Psalm Reflection
Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior.
Remember that your compassion, O LORD, and your love are from of old. The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not; in your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD.
Good and upright is the LORD; thus he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way.
