Welcome to Walton Hall, home of the famous traveller, naturalist and conservationist, the ‘Squire of Walton Hall’, Charles Waterton (1782 - 1865)

Charles Waterton was born in June 1782; he devoted his life to the conservation of wildlife and the environment. Walton Hall is reputed to be the world’s first nature reserve and it was here where Waterton spent the second

half of his life.

In 1821, Waterton built a wall around the estate. It took 5 years to build and stretches over 3 miles and at it’s highest point was 16 feet. The cost was £9000. In today’s money, that would equate to a hefty 2.5 million.

In May 1829, Waterton married Anne Edmonstone at a convent in Bruges, Belgium. Their marriage was said to be happy and loving one but was cut tragically short when Anne died in 1830, 6 days after giving birth to their

son Edmond.

Built in 1790 by Charles’ father Thomas Waterton, Walton Hall has been the home to various individuals, centre of the world’s first nature reserve, it went on to be a military hospital, and an extension of the Manygates

maternity hospital from 1979 it has been a country house hotel.

Whitley Neill Rhubarb & Ginger 43% £6.00

This Whitley Neill gin is sweet but the ruhbarb make it gorgeously crisp with spicy ginger that cuts across and give a warmth combined with hints of orange and coriander, creating a seriously tasty gin. Pair with Fever Tree tonic and a sliceof apple.
