DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst German Academic Exchange Service Sustainable Water Management: Funding for Serial Summer Schools in Germany What are the Programme Ob-  jectives? One of the priority funding points, which the Federal Ministry of Ed- ucation and Research (BMBF) attaches particular importance to in its Framework Programme "Research for Sustainable Develop- ment" is Sustainable Water Management (NaWaM): "One of the major challenges of the future is to ensure the supply of clean water to the world population. Population growth, water pollution and the increasing water consumption per capita have a strong impact on water quality. In addition, expansive climate changes and change in land use influence global and regional water cycles and thus ques- tion the medium and long-term availability of water" In view of this background, the BMBF specifically promotes research projects to develop, adapt and internationally disseminate technologies and strategies for the sustainable managemen t of the Resource "Wa- ter". Of particular interest in this respect are the thematic fields of "Water and Energy" "Water and Health", "Water and Nutrition", "Water and Environment" as well as "Water in Urban Areas".  At the centre of the DAAD Special Programme funded with the re- sources of the BMBF on "Sustainable Water Management" lies the promotion of young scientists from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Jor- dan, Iran, Vietnam and Indonesia. To this end, Individual Schol- arships are offered for Students and Doctoral Students in the first Funding Line. The offer of a second Funding Line targets the Insti- tutes at Universities and Non-University Research Institutions in Germany. They are given the opportunity to carry out Serial Sum- mer Schools on the thematic fields mentioned above. Serial Sum- mer Schools above all aim to initiate research collaboration and projects. Besides the cultural and specialist exchange between those participating, the discussion on and preparation of research findings connected with the latest priority funding points of the BMBF, can be promoted. Furthermore, the Summer Schools offer the opportunity to present Research Locations, Projects, Infrastruc- tures and Databases in Germany. In order to raise the quality of the practical relevance, com- mercial companies from business and industry, from the spe- cialised authorities of the Federation and the Federal States, as well as i n the management and regulation of resources, in corporations under public law, or in research institutions in Germany should be included as far as possible. Who can apply? In principle, applications are open to the Heads of the specialised, relevant Institutes at Higher Education Institutions and Non- University Institutions in Germany.
