In Beryl’s presentation at the General meeting, she mentioned all of these words. Whenever we paint, it should be with a purpose. Ask yourself what you are trying to say with this painting. Quoting Beryl, “What’s the point of painting , if you do not have a purpose?” Without purpose, our paintings may lack focus and energy. If we are passionate about our subject matter, emotion will be conveyed to our viewer, and our painting will have focus and will satisfy that inner need that inspired the original purpose

President’s Message–Donna Overly

Hello WWG members,

Fall seems to finally be here, along with some much needed rain. Our Fall General meeting was well attended. Everyone enjoyed the salad buffet luncheon. It was great catching up with our past Presidents, as eight of them were in attendance. It is wonderful that our first president, Kathy Summers, is still a member and was there to reminisce about our early days as an organization. It was surprising how Apache Shores embraced our tablecloths and flowers! Thank you, Helen, for sharing your zinnias; their colors provided a cheerful atmosphere. I want to thank all who helped with this event- Rae, Michele, Helen, Kathy, Shirley and Sara Jane. We could not run WWG without our volunteers.

Thank you for you’re supporting Marjorie the “brush lady”. She kept having to restock her piles of brushes, so I know that many of you will be ready to paint for our upcoming

shows. Please look for our meeting minutes in an e-mail if you were not able to attend the meeting, as many issues were discussed.

Following the meeting was the painting critique by our very own Beryl Kerwick. Thanks to members who brought in paintings for her to critique. We are so fortunate to have Beryl share her wisdom and understanding of art design and composition with us. I will be quoting Beryl in the Alphabet Journey article, as she focused on some pretty important “P”s during her presentation. I want to thank Beryl again and also thank Rae, our activities chair, for organizing this helpful and instructional event for us.

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention our ongoing need to fill some positions in our organization. If you are interested in learning more about these volunteer opportunities, please contact Marsha Reeves, our Nominating Committee Chair. As discussed, the activities chair could be a shared position for several of you working together. Many hands make light work. Happy Painting,

to paint. Another member asked Beryl, “How do you know when a painting is finished?” Beryl replied, “when your painting says what you wanted it to say.” This is a wonderful thread of wisdom that we can apply to every painting. Only you, the creator, can answer this. Thank you, Beryl, for your wisdom and for sharing your purpose and

passion with us. Donna O.

Beryl's Critique at the General Meeting –

Eileen Pestorius

What do you look for when you put up a painting before entering it into a show? Our own Beryl Kerwick discussed what she looks for before she enters one, and she has the ribbons and checks to prove her thoughts make sense. She looks for a strong color dominance and also a vigorous perspective with a fore, middle, and background. She likes a subtle pattern interwoven into the works sometimes, and a large shape, predominantly with at least one side hard-edged. Before painting, she draws and draws, rearranging the composition many times, sometimes using 6 or 8 small drawings, sometimes sticking them on a wall, and also considering whether a small amount of collage or acrylic might help the work. Several thumbnails will show you when to add or omit something, since the painting must stand on its own to be good: it's more than copying a photo. She only frames the good ones! Learning to assess one's own work is a skill necessary to grow as an artist and your painting will speak for you. You needn't try to explain it; in fact, TMI is the enemy of a good painting! Drop that brush before you overstate or over paint! Some mini-suggestions that came out in the critiques were: do less on teeth than you think; you won't go wrong with "golden thirds," so divide your paper when developing a center of interest and note the intersection of lines; be confident with your brush strokes; link pieces in a painting by shadow, overlap or some device to avoid

"orphans." Thanks to Beryl, our paintings should be stronger than ever!

From Pauline Jacobson: “I was saddened to hear that David Busch passed away. He used to be a member of WWG, so many of you probably knew him.” http://bigbendnow.com/2013/09/hiker-dies-in-big-bend-national-park-2/ From Sue Kemp: “David lived in Boerne and hadn’t been active in WWG for quite a while. He loved to paint wildflowers, cacti, and mountains, and was the poster artist for the Wildflower Center twice. I have known him for many years and my thoughts go out to his partner, Ray, in this time of loss.” Editor’s note: Recent rains have brought a bounty of wildflowers to Big Bend this fall. Many people come there every fall to see the esperanza, scarlet bouvardia, cenzio, and ocotillo in bloom. David was hiking along the Oak Springs Trail when he became ill.

Congratulations to the People's Choice winners of the "Love of Books Exhibit" at the Georgetown Library: 1st to Vicki Goodrich for Turtle Rock; 2nd to Kim Hoester for Old Dude; 3rd to Tom Shefelman for Congress Avenue, and 4th Marsha Reeves for The Red Wheelbarrow.

Blues Day Studio Gallery Exhibit. Unfortunately, this exhibit has been cancelled, as the gallery is closing.

Waterloo's Fall Show is beautiful. Thank all of you for making the transition to jpeg entry. Final judging by Kris Parins is on October 13. Please bring your accepted, framed paintings to Apache Shores between 11:45 and 12:45. Judging begins at 1:00, preceding Kris's demo. Thanks to Pat Molina and Sandra

Carlton for co-chairing this show. Special thanks to Marsha Reeves, who so patiently collected, formatted and submitted jpegs to Kris. We hang this show on November 4, with the reception on the 10th. LOAC/Bass This is a major show for us, featuring large work. It is our first traveling exhibit. It will hang in Columbus at the Live Oak Art Center for 6 weeks and then at the Bass for 6 weeks. Deadline for jpegs is December 10. There is a discount entry fee for early submission; see the prospectus for all the details. As there are quite a few, read carefully. We will be asking for volunteers to help transport the show to Columbus on January 16 and back again on March 10. Dianne Holley and Helen Green are co-chairs. Work not previously exhibited at the Bass is eligible for submission, including work in the Fall show, if it meets the size requirements. Spring Member Show Details will be in next months’ newsletter. The final judging is at Apache Shores on March 30 by Thomas Schaller and will hang May 11 through July 6 at the Corridor of Arts. Marsha Reeves and Helen Green are the co-chairs. Inspiration Gallery at Riverbend Church This show hangs on June 3 through the summer. More information will follow, but work will be small for this show (under 12”x12” framed), and the theme will be whatever inspires you - faith, family, nature. You get the idea. The Old Bakery and Emporium has received our application to re-hang our very successful Georgetown Library Show "For the Love of Books" next fall during the Texas Book Festival. We are hoping, not only to get a slot, but to have a fun weekend doing demos, gallery talks and maybe asking a volunteer to wear a sandwich board. We should know if we are chosen by mid-October. Thanks to Shirley Slaughter and Donna Annacone for gathering information from participants and submitting the paperwork.

The Julia C Butridge Gallery at the Daughtery Center in Austin will not announce its schedule until mid-November. If we are lucky enough to get a slot, it will probably be for the month of August, 2014, which will certainly be another major exhibit. Keep your fingers crossed. The application was gorgeous; thanks to all of you who sent me jpegs of your work, resumes and artist statements; now we have all of that information on file for other opportunities. A handy calendar, compliments of Marsha Reeves, is at the end of the newsletter just before the prospectus. Gayle Allen has found us another venue. Recycle Reads at 5335 Burnet Rd. has a lovely area to display artwork and has invited WWG to put together a show for February through March which will coincide with their 5th year anniversary. This is the perfect exhibit opportunity for members in the central part of town and all of you who were planning to participate at the Blues Day Gallery, which was cancelled. Let Gayle know if you are interested in participating and if you would like to help. <[email protected]> Plexiglass is required. Not to many other rules. More to come in next month’s newsletter. First of all, in case you haven’t noticed, the formatting requirements for putting your painting photos on the web in the Members’ Gallery and Members’ Website Links pages have changed. All you have to do is send me your photo that is: cropped, borderless, in jpg, gif or png format, and more than 500 KB and less than 2 MB in size. Your photo should be labeled with your last name, a dot or dash, then the name of your painting. So, if you haven’t already, do sign up to have your paintings shown in our website’s members’ gallery and have a website link with a painting photo. You can do this when you sign up for membership next year. During the last several months, I have been working on optimizing our search engine by describing our group and what we do (it’s what you see if our website comes up on a search) and entering key words that describe our group, so folks can find us. I think it is working in that I’m getting a lot more ‘Contact Us’ inquiries, especially for our workshops. We have also found out through others looking at our website that if you are looking

Page 5: Waterloo Watercolor GroupFinal judging by Kris Parins is on October 13. Please bring your accepted, framed paintings to Apache Shores between 11:45 and 12:45. Judging begins at 1:00,

at it on an i-pad, you have to click on each menu item twice (the list on the left, such as membership) to get to the page with all the main information! On the i-phone, when you click on a menu item, it will list the main page along with the other imbedded pages so you still have to click the menu item twice. This also may be a problem for our mac users. I will work with the host site to see if there is a way around this issue, because it is causing frustration to visitors looking for information. The fallback solution is to put a note on the home page about this. A fun change we will be making in the next few months is to change our home page banner (the painting-like image under our title and on top of the main body of text) every few months. We will be using slices of some of our board member’s paintings! First up will be Kathy Summers and she will receive credit for her ‘banner’ on our home page. I do have two questions to pose to you. The first one is about the Members’ Gallery. Currently, folks who sign up can get up to 6 painting photos (with information on price, size etc.) for $20/year. Right now there are only 3 places for painting photos per person, and I am finding that no one is changing out their paintings mid-year. So my question is: what would you think of having all 6 paintings at once shown for the $20? Or maybe we could have 4 or 5 shown in a row. They have changed the way the painting information is shown, so the painting description is shown right under the painting picture and not when you click on the painting. I can’t change this, so if we do 4 – 6 in a row, the painting pictures will be smaller along with the information under the paintings. That is no problem if you are viewing on a smart phone and can enlarge the views easily. However, if I do 2 rows of 3 and keep everything as large as it is now, the page would be very long, and folks at the bottom would be less likely to be found! We could also leave it as is. Please let me know what you think.

The second question is: If we had Pay-Pal on our website, would you use it? You could pay for membership, shows and workshops with it. However, we may have to increase our prices slightly, as Pay-Pal does charge a percentage of each transaction. We may be able to get a break on the percent fee because we are a non-profit. The question I would like to know is: If we got it, would you REALLY use it? Thanks, and I’m always open to new ideas for improving WWG’s website.

Nancy Charbeneau

Hello all. I am the assistant editor of our WWG newsletter, and the “nominating committee” for vacant Board positions. I am a fairly new member, having joined WWG in the fall of 2011. I am a native Texan from Pasadena. My husband Jim and I moved to Austin from Houston in 1978 after the birth of our first child, Mary (now 35). That move proved to be fortunate in many ways, not only because we love Austin, but in ’78, when Mary was born with Down Syndrome, Austin was one of the few places in the country with a pioneer infant stimulation program. I’ve been a happy Austinite ever since, and my son, Christopher, (32) was born here. I have loved to draw and paint as long as I can remember; interests I shared with my father. A refinery worker at Shell Oil, he was an amateur oil painter and lapidarist, who took me along on innumerable rock collecting and photography excursions across Texas. I also shared my father’s passion for history, and although I took some college level art courses, my degree was in English/History Teacher Education (University of Houston, 1974). My husband Jim, also a history major, and I met in a class on the Crusades in our senior year. After Graduating, I took the “scenic route” to finding my career path, working in jobs which included a Public Welfare Caseworker, and an editor of digitized oil well

logs. After my children were born, I spent 9 years as a potter. In 1989 I managed to completely burn myself out on pottery, took a job in education (at Hays High School), and never looked back. I never thought in a million years that I would be a Special Education Teacher, much less a Science teacher, but I wound up being both for 20 years. Apparently being a know-it-all who reads excessively does have advantages. They needed a Special Ed teacher who could teach Science, and I was the one the people in charge thought could handle it. I loved it, and eventually got certified in Secondary Science and Special Education. I think one of the reasons I had so much fun teaching was that I could incorporate art into almost every lesson. I retired from Lehman High School in 2011, when my husband’s medical issues demanded that I spend more time at home. Watercolor is my medium of choice. I love the look, feel and smell of watercolor paint, paper, and brushes, and I love the connection with history that traditionally made paper gives me. Watercolor is a living medium—a living animal with a will of its own. My goal as a painter is to somehow tame the animal, without killing its spirit. Effectively communicating in watercolor is an ongoing journey, which I will (happily), never complete. It is the quest that matters.

Thomas Schaller’s workshop is filling up fast.

It is $275for members, $325 for non-

members.

The workshop he will be doing for us is called

the Architecture of Light, and here is a bit of

information from his website.

My workshops have become a real joy for me

to conduct, and I think for painters - of all

levels - to attend! Of course, we study lots of

specific techniques for painting in watercolor.

But the real emphasis is in helping painters to

discover new ways of seeing the world

around us, and how to find compelling

subject matter and striking compositions

almost anywhere. And primarily, we study

the nature of light. I emphasize the goal of not

painting the object or the scene before us as

much as painting the light that defines it and

gives it life. The practice is an exciting one and

a technique that can help turn an ordinary

painting into an extraordinary work of art.

Bookworms - Eileen Pestorius

Bookworms: Claude & Camille Bookworms will meet at the home of Eileen Pestorius at 9:30 on Saturday, November 2, to discuss a novel about Camille and Claude Monet. Author Stephanie Cowell explores the passionate love affair of the Impressionist painter. How miserable were those garrets of Paris where poor young artists were forced to live? Why were these young bohemians derided by the Academy, thus denied wealth and acclaim? As a young woman with connections and money, would you toss it over for an artist who spurned his father's nautical supplies business but couldn't buy groceries? Join us to examine the works and life of this man of vision and his muse and lover. We'll have the coffee ready, so just let us know if you'll be joining us, but come even with no reservation. Claude & Camille is available used for under $5 via Amazon, also in paperback, on Kindle, at a library or bookstore. For more information,

Waterloo's first traveling exhibit!

For the last several years, our exhibition at the Bass has received very positive feedback from the staff and from viewers, and we are thrilled to have been invited to mount another exhibition for 2014. Large formats and a cohesive body of work have contributed to the success of this show, and the following prospectus reflects our established pattern. After viewing our 2013 exhibition, the director of the Live Oak Art Center (LOAC) in Columbus, Texas, has extended an invitation to host the 2014 exhibit preceding the show at the Bass, hanging in both locations for six weeks each.

The entry fee of $35 is for both venues. A $5 discount is available for early submission. The committee will accept packed paintings at a central location, transport work to and from Columbus, store paintings in the interim, hang the Bass, and store packing materials to reuse at the strike, return packed paintings to the same central location for pickup - all for no handling or transportation fees.

Neither venue charges WWG for the privilege of exhibiting, but the LOAC requests a tax deductible donation of 30% of sales from checks collected by them, and WWG requests the same amount from sales generated at the Bass, which will be handled by the individual artists. Any work sold at LOAC should be replaced by a similar work for the Bass exhibit. Work previously shown at the Bass with any group is not allowed, but work from other WWG shows, such as one of our annual exhibits, may be submitted. All work should be for sale.

Artists are encouraged to enter up to 4 paintings by jpeg. Our juror is, once again, Linda S. Wells. The number of accepted paintings from each artist will depend on the total number of entries. For artists who

enter this show, you may also submit up to four unframed, matted, labeled, priced and sealed works to be made available for purchase in a painting rack. There is no minimum size for matted only work.

Due to transportation and storage, work should be framed in a simple metal or wood frame with Plexiglas glazing, as weight is a factor. All work should be matted. Our calendar provides adequate time for framing after notification of accepted work. A simple standard, reusable packing system is necessary and instructions will be included with your acceptance letter.

We hope every member seriously considers entering this show and supporting the exhibition committee's commitment to securing new and larger venues. Anyone who has ever entered a show outside of WWG's own exhibits can appreciate what an opportunity and privilege this is.

Sincerely,

Dianne Holley and Helen Green
