MostsmalldomesticappliancesinAustraliaandNewZealandusesinglephaseACpowersupplymakingthe230V-2or3wiremodelsformanytheobviouschoice.However,itisimportanttokeepinmindthatthethreephasemotorhasseveralinherentadvantagesincludingalowercurrentdrawperphase,anabilitytocreatemoretorque,andsmootherrunningthansinglephasemotors.
Singlephasemotorsaresimpleinconstruction,durableandgenerallymaintenancefreeinoperationbutsinglephasemotorsarenotself-startingsorequireeitheranin-builtorexternalstarter.TheDaveyDMEandDMsinglephase2wiremotorshavein-builtstarterswhilethe3wiremodelsrequireanexternalstarterbox.
TherecommendedstartingmethodfortheDMEmodelsareCapacitorstart/Capacitorrun(CSCR)whilefortheDMmodels(except3.7kw)thecontrolboxisthePermanentSplitCapacitordesign(PSC).
TheuseoftheCSCRcontrolboxesmakestheDMEmotorsidealforcertainapplicationsbecausethestartcapacitoroffershighstartingtorque,whiletheruntypecapacitorbalancesthemotorwhichresultsinasmoothoperationmeaningthatthemotorcanbetterhandlebreakdownoroverloadtorque.Metalenclosurecontrolboxes,withaprotectionratingofIP24,arealsoavailablefortheDMEmotors.
ThePermanentSplitCapacitordesign(PSC)ControlboxisrecommendwiththeDMmodels(exceptforthe3.7kWwhichrequiretheCSCRcontrolbox).Inthiscontrolboxthecapacitorissetinseriesduringstartingandrunningwhichgenerallymeanslowertorquebutalsomuchlowerstartingcurrents.CombiningthesefeaturesmakethePCScontrolboxandtheDMmotorstherecommendedchoiceindemandinginstallationswherethereisriskofhighvoltagedropsorpotentialoverloading.
