CHANGING LANEWAYS

Wave benches, designed by OCULUS breathe new life into the laneways of Camberwell in Melbourne,

reflecting the character of a community.

PROJECTS GUIDEwww.outdoordesign.com.au AUSTRALIAN SHOWCASE

T he dull, service-only laneways in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell have presented the perfect opportunity for

Boroondara Council to create a blueprint that would potentially revitalise the wider municipality, whilst reflecting the character of a community.

The initial trial took place in Market Lane, a thoroughfare leading from Burke Road to a car park, which hosts the Camberwell Fresh Food Market from Tuesday to Saturday each week.

“It started as a thoroughfare where traders and the Rotary Club wanted to do something to liven it up and make it more useful,” says Boroondara Council Senior Landscape Architect Katie Williams. “There was a lack of public seating in the area, so we engaged Street Furniture Australia.”

Limited by the lack of space, the narrow path required a design that could run along the wall while still allowing for public access. Street Furniture Australia already had a product, designed by leading landscape architects OCULUS, that fitted the description: fluid, playful seats that could be customised in a linear fashion to run along the wall of the lane.

Another challenge was the privately-owned buildings on either side. The council needed solutions that would make the area vibrant without mounting canopies to the building walls. Instead, local artist Nicole Tattersall was commissioned to create a mural along the theme of playfulness to tie into the relationship

with the Camberwell market. She created a colourful storybook mural, telling of two children who go fishing near an orchard and dream of apple pie.

The council also invited the public to offer further suggestions for other laneways as part of the Camberwell Laneways Discussion Paper, which asked the public to consider how the spaces might be used differently or what attributes they would like to see. A survey was mailed to 4300 residents, tenants and absentee property owners within 250 metres of the junction. Information was available at the council office and online, and promoted through traditional and social media. Then in April last year, a community consultation session was held in the completed Market Laneway with atmosphere provided by a jazz trio and colourful buntings showcasing pedestrian suggestions.

The council collected approximately 450 survey responses. And while some ideas were outlandish, many liked the idea of public art and plants in laneways. Some suggested amenities such as seating, lighting and weather protection could be improved, and others supported active community events, youth activities and opportunities for local businesses.

The Market Lane pilot project helped the Boroondara Council understand some of the issues associated with laneway improvements, according to Williams. With positive community feedback and excitement around subsequent

laneway ideas, the council is now looking at a strategy considering laneways across the municipality.

“We’ve only just started looking at the other major centres, so we haven’t calculated the number of existing lanes – but surprisingly, Camberwell itself had more than 50,” Kate says. “We’re not going to be able to do something in all those lanes, but we’ll look at prioritising them and focusing on key locations for future improvements.”

A unique living wall in Turkey has been designed to improve the aesthetic outcome and workplace of a large

textile company in Antalya City. The planting hides and enhances a large building wall, and represents the biggest green wall project in Turkey to date.

The green wall was installed with Atlantis Gro-Wall 4®, which is designed to attenuate noise, improve air quality and beautify the city. This piece of living art will enhance the experience among visitors, guests and hosts, augmenting their sense of wellbeing and relaxation.

The Atlantis modular recycled plastic receptacles were put together in a geometrical pattern to cover 340m2 of the external area. Three species of plants were

used to provide a spectacular visual effect. The planting process has been done over our specially formulated growing media.

Atlantis Vertical Green Wall has the capacity to consume and process CO2 at rates in excess of similar size trees. The project has an added effect of making customers and the public happier in their surroundings when compared to conventional car park treatments. The Gro-Wall treatment provides people with a connection to nature.

Atlantis Aurora works with our local partners to provide an accumulation of 35 years’ experience designing green infrastructure. Our unique inspection and test plans and regular advice provide accountability at all stages of a project.

Atlantis delivers with no surprises. The vertical garden was developed

with our partner Melih Seckin of Berceri who installed and managed the project. Approximately 4,356 plants were used, with an installation footprint of 207m2.

PROJECTS GUIDEwww.outdoordesign.com.au AUSTRALIAN SHOWCASE

T his award-winning garden in Panton Hill, Victoria is modern, functional, easy to maintain, and the perfect place to

unwind and relax.Completed in 2012 and designed and

constructed by PTA Landscapes, the country garden features low maintenance entertaining spaces that blend seamlessly with the wider surrounds.

The dwelling is set high on a slope and the brief was to incorporate the planned pool with the surrounds and make the area around the dwelling useable, whilst reducing the harsh slope and complementing the natural surrounds.

PTA Landscapes was responsible for the construction of the garden and landscaping, as well as the design, engineering, earthworks, drainage, exposed aggregate concrete, stone and gravel pavements, timber and paved staircases, pool surrounds, front entrance, gabion walls, rock work, timber screening, fixtures and furniture, garden bed works, irrigation, planting and seeding.

The garden is characterised by its seasonal appeal, and is a modern, functional and styled addition to the landscape.

The key features of the project include functionality, the entrance, tiering, and the way it effortlessly complements the natural surrounds including the dam.

The project includes LED strip lighting under the floating hardwood stairs, a fire pit, and bollard lighting. The planting consists of native grasses, cycads, star jasmine, birds of paradise and planter boxes with feature plants for spring blooms. Floating native ironbark hardwood stairs provide a transition from alfresco to fire pit, while textured non-slip granite paving complements the natural pink sandstone in the walls of the house. The elevated decks provide platforms and steppers in the garden areas, with frameless glass pool fencing used to ensure views are not obstructed. Gabion baskets with hand placed granite rocks and block rendered walls were also built to transition between the tiers.

A water wise irrigation system was also incorporated into the design, with sprays watering the garden with water that is harvested directly from the onsite dam.

This project has been a huge winner for PTA Landscapes, taking out the Landscape Design (150m2), Hard Structures in the Landscape, and Residential Landscape (> $200,000) Awards at the 2013 Victorian Landscape Awards.

KinderGarden™ aims to reinstate the "garden" into the play spaces of early

learning facilities commencing with six kindergartens and day care centres across Ballarat.

A collaborative project between Fleming’s Nurseries and Ballarat City Council and supported by service providers Eureka Community Kindergarten Association (ECKA), and Uniting Care, KinderGarden™ will also be underpinned by research from Deakin University.

The project aims to completely re-evaluate the way early learning

facilities shape their outdoor play environments to encourage the best learning and development outcomes for children from 0 to five years of age.

Play areas and equipment in standard early learning, daycare and kindergartens across Australia include a range of equipment and materials made from plastic and metal, they feature large expanses of rubber soft fall, chip-bark, concrete, sandpits and little-to-no natural materials such as grass, trees, or plants.

The elimination of perceived risk is often a major factor in the way

Fleming's Nurseries is putting the "garden" back into kindergartens with a newproject that aims to re-evaluate the way outdoor play spaces are designed.

play spaces have developed in recent years with sticks, rocks and plants removed along with traditional organic soft fall to mitigate the risk to children. These have been replaced with synthetic soft fall surfaces and plastic equipment that offers limited challenge.

Other factors such as excessive sun and drought have influenced the design decisions made for these environments. The recent and long-term drought made the maintenance of natural turf difficult, so synthetic options were introduced while an increased public awareness of the risks of UV has led to the introduction of shade structures to eliminate exposure to sun.

KinderGarden™ works to reshape the playground environment not only to increase the level of physical activity of children but also to vary the range of activities in which children participate. Climbing, balancing, stretching and reaching can all be done in a range of situations within a KinderGarden™.

The gardens are designed so that these activities take place as part of play and not the sole activity directed by a piece of equipment.

The KinderGarden™ spaces are designed to be random and not regular and predictable. This is specifically to encourage

children to be more aware of their physical environment and to assess the risks and challenges that it presents. For example, rocks used as steps are not perfectly level with regular heights.

Assessment of risks and personal capabilities is a learned behaviour and the sooner that learning commences – the sooner a child will master it.

Bringing in plants and functional trees such as trees which will bear fruit that the kitchen and children can use in their learning experiences, helps children appreciate the natural world around them.

Deakin University will publish their research findings at the end of 2014, however, their initial studies have already seen overwhelmingly positive benefits of the new play spaces with wider ranges of movement being recorded and greater imaginational play taking shape following the redevelopment of the play areas.

Fleming’s will continue to champion the KinderGarden™ program across Victoria in 2015.

V ictoria Square/Tarntanyangga (the meeting place of the Kaurna people while hosting other clans of the

surrounding plain and hills) is Adelaide’s principal square, the centre and focal point of Adelaide. At approximately six hectares, it is 50 per cent larger than each of the other five squares integral to Colonel William Light’s plan for Adelaide’s city centre (Community Land Management Plan, Adelaide City Council). Taylor Cullity Lethlean’s master plan successfully addresses the needs of the various interest groups

using the site. The bold, flexible and elegant scheme at the heart of the city provides a quiet refuge within the city. This bold design is exemplified in the furniture, shelter and pergola system. Together these elements form a visually and physically strong edge to the central open space.

HUB worked with TCL to refine the details and supply the two 50m lengths of deck and lounge either side of the open space which will be doubled in size in future stages. The decking/lounge are formed using a combination of furniture

modules including seating, tables, chaise lounges, ottomans and sand filled play pits. The modules combine to create a series of unique furniture sections that when butted together offer a wide range of formal and informal seating choice. An added complexity to the furniture installation is the subtle perimeter curve the decking/lounges follows. This curve necessitated each furniture section have a very subtle wedge shape and the timber slats be hand-cut to achieve uniform gaps across the sinuous surface of the decking/lounge setting.

Adelaide’s Victoria Square exemplifies a bold design thanks to the combination of unique, integrated furniture modules.

W ahroonga Park is one of the most popular parks of the Ku-ring-gai community and is highly valued

as an area for passive recreation and leisure. Ku-ring-gai Council has provided a wonderful playground to be enjoyed by the community.

Completed in September 2014, the new playground has carefully considered the needs of young children and the comfort of carers. Proludic’s themed play equipment encourages imaginative play whilst swings, a carousel and cable ride encourage active play. Musical equipment adds another play dimension, and the planting design and shade enhances the attractiveness and comfort of the setting.

There are three different play zones for different age groups of children. For the youngest children there is a train themed zone. This area provides an ideal play setting for toddlers who are still developing their physical, cognitive and social skills. The Little Train excites the imagination of children and parents alike. The adjacent train platform complements the theme and features stepping bells, a transport puzzle board, and a Little Bench platform seat scaled just right for young children. The Viva Rubber Safety Surfacing features a train track to enhance the train theme in this area.

Physical skills can be developed by young children on a Tiboo Slide, Chickies Springer,

Climbing Hut cubby house and Toddlers Swing set. A seating wall forms the perimeter of the toddler play area and provides comfortable seating for carers to relax on whilst remaining close to their young children. A large shade structure adds to the comfort and safety of users in this area.

Keo the Shipwreck features in another play zone designed for children from the age of four. The Keo inspires all kinds of ship-themed imaginative games amongst children. A ship’s steering wheel, talking tube and portholes enhance the fun, whilst children can challenge each other on the rocking and rotating Rodeoboard and Flipper Play Panel.

The Speed Gyro carousel and Aerospeed cable ride are in an active play zone that provides for more dynamic play amongst children and carers. A swing set for older children is located outside the fenced area of the playground.

The Wahroonga Park Playground provides a wealth of play activities for families to enjoy together in a beautiful park setting with a particular focus on the specific needs of the youngest members of our community.

Rhino Grating’s custom designed walkway of steel lily pads features in the international award-winning,

Botanic Gardens. The Australian Garden was created by Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL) and features steel lily pads manufactured by Rhino Grating to meet specific design and performance criteria. This stunning artistic walkway is manufactured in circular components from galvanised steel and meets the brief for integrating native flora with innovative design and high-performance materials.

The Australian Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Victoria won the prestigious International Landscape of the Year Award for 2013 at the World Architecture Festival. This award recognises the artistry of landscape architecture. The winning project covers 15 hectares and showcases 170,000 Australian native plants within a bold contemporary design. The jury commented that “The gardens showcase the journey of water through the Australian landscape, from the dessert to the coastal fringe, celebrating the diversity and contrasting elements of our landscape”.

Steel platforms are used to provide visitors with easy access, to enjoy the waterways without intruding on native vegetation. Using steel grating lily pads is an innovative concept that was extended to include non-intrusive walkways

throughout the gardens; providing public access to other landscaped areas while minimising erosion and damage to the native flora. The use of steel platforms provides clean lines to showcase both the native plant selection and static elements of the garden design. Rhino Grating has the manufacturing capability to customise the shape and configuration of these steel platforms to create sculptured components within the landscape.

A selection of high-performance materials, such as untreated steel, hot dipped galvanised steel and fibreglass are available to create site platforms, walkways, building facades and alternative installations. Rhino Grating’s products may be tailored to create specific design elements, while providing non-intrusive walkways and public access to environmentally sensitive sites or heritage properties. Flexible manufacturing systems allow platforms and walkways to be customised into shapes or artistic installations with functional attributes. The Australian Garden brings together facets of horticulture, architecture, ecology and art to create a stunning landscape experience.

T he Westfield Shopping Centre located in Mt Gravatt in Brisbane Queensland has been reinvigorated with life and colour

thanks to the installation of a living greenwall.Completed in September 2014, Greenwall

Australia was responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of 90 square metres of 4000 plants.

Working closely with the Westfield design team, Greenwall Australia was charged with bringing some life and colour to the atrium void.

The air cleaning aspect of the greenwall was a big consideration for the project, which was two-years in the planning.

Best described as a free-form, abstract planting design, key features of the project include Greenwall Australia’s patented SkALE Greenwall pods; and the web-based irrigation controller and fertigation system which ensures plant health and constant water supply.

Greenwall Australia has breathed new life into the Westfield building, and turned

W ynyard Quarter is the newest addition to Auckland’s public waterfront space since the area was

redeveloped for the America's Cup in 2000. Wynyard Quarter comprises approximately 37 hectares of land and almost three kilometres of costal frontage. Stage one, completed in August 2011, provides 500 metres of places and spaces right next to the water’s edge for the public to enjoy.

Jellicoe Street, North Wharf and Silo Park occupy the water’s edge offering entertainment, cultural, retail and event space. This space is supported with new mixed uses including office, retail and residential developments.

Wynyard Quarter was developed across a number of separate, but carefully coordinated projects. Appointed by Waterfront Auckland, HUB worked directly with the design consultants to take on their furniture concept design ideas and then detail design, prototype and supply the various styles found across site.

The main furniture elements include the integrated timber and concrete furniture elements, the rustic timber bench barriers and bollards and the colourful inverted stacked industrial baskets, all offering informal seating and architectural accents in the urban landscape. Collectively, the furniture reflects “Auckland's gritty

maritime heritage in a new, revitalised public environment”.

Jellicoe Street, North Wharf and Silo Park projects set the bench mark for urban design and detailing which is being repeated across subsequent stages and projects including the recently complete first stage of the Halsey Street and Daldy Street upgrades, the Tram Loop and the soon to be developed Tank Farm.

U ntil recently, access to 90 Mile Beach at Loch Sport, Victoria, was difficult. The soft sand was a challenge for even

the super fit, which meant that the beautiful shoreline was being underutilised by locals and tourists alike. A pedestrian beach access was needed to make it easier for everyone to enjoy 90 Mile Beach.

A traditional timber structure was not the answer. It would have required fixing

into the ground with concrete, leaving it perched many metres above the sand after a king tide. The Loch Sport Community House wanted to use products that would serve everyone for the long-term, reducing maintenance costs and providing a better solution.

The beach access path is 130m long and 1.8m wide. Installed by local contractor John Rebel, the project uses recycled-plastic

profiles as joists which are laid directly on top of the sand and surfaced with Enduroplank™.

The Loch Sport Community House chose to work with Replas because the products are sustainable and highly durable. As a community house with green values and strong ties to the community, they wanted to demonstrate the power of choosing a sustainable solution. This recycled plastic

project saved the equivalent of 2.5 million plastic bags from going to landfill. The floating pathway was quick and easy to lay thus saving time and money. This simple structure could easily be disassembled if required and sections added as needed.

Enduroplank ™ decking is made from recycled plastic which is low maintenance and will never split, rot, crack or need painting. It also offers superior slip-resistance when compared with conventional materials. The recycled plastic profiles provide the perfect sub-substructure because they won’t corrode in the high-salinity environment.

B rooks Reach is a Stockland development on the New South Wales south coast; a picturesque,

family-friendly master-planned residential community near Dapto. At completion, Brooks Reach will include 630 home sites set over 70 hectares and will feature parks, cycle ways and wide, open spaces.

Completed in October 2012, Emu Park, constructed by Simpson Landscapes, sits within the development and was designed to create a playspace, with BBQ area and toilet facilities, for the local community. Children of the local community played a large part in the design of the park.

The park has many different finishes and surfaces that work together and flow through the park. Varying levels and colours add a sense of movement and interest. It also allows multiple and separate areas for gathering, play and recreation. Different colours on surfaces also makes the design stand out.

To keep the space feeling close to nature and not built-up, large areas of grass and mass plantings were included. The community wanted grassy open spaces to throw down a picnic blanket, kick off their shoes and feel the joy of grass and nature beneath their feet.

A basketball court was included in the design for the bigger kids and adults to enjoy, along with a dinky track around a section of the playground. A covered shelter over seating and the BBQ provides welcome relief from the sun or rain for parents wanting to keep a close eye over their children enjoying the park facilities.

While playground equipment is generally designed and installed to suit the little

ones, this project tried to utilise playground equipment which would cater to all ages. And, in a sign of the times, the toilet facilities are fully automated and self-cleaning.

Retaining walls and footpaths were built out of a special concrete mix and sand blasted to expose the aggregate in walls. Wet-pour stone was used for permeable paving around an existing established tree.

The completed park is a space that is sure to be treasured by the lucky community who live there.

C ompleted at the end of 2013, the Albert Tower located on Albert Road in South Melbourne feature an elegant, graceful

and striking design that is contemporary yet timeless as well.

Situated within Melbourne’s art precinct, the tower itself is a work of art with a distinctive structural lattice frame and interplay between dark and light timber.

At Albert Tower, residents are surrounded by gorgeous gardens, with the most secluded and spectacular of all right above them. The rooftop terrace features manicured lawns and picturesque plantings alongside timber decking and sun lounges, complete with views of Melbourne and beyond.

Elements of the tower’s latticework skin form sculptures around the terrace’s edge, framing the views and elevating the mood of a private residents-only retreat, perfect for relaxing and entertaining.

Residents can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from the 90m-high roof terrace, which features a communal garden, rooftop gym, and dining and conference room.

Pasco Construction Solutions Pty Ltd was called upon to supply the Buzon Pedestals for the installation of the hexagonal pavers and timber decking on the roof top terrace. Capable of accommodating heights from 17mm-1070mm, it allows unsightly plumbing and electrical services to be concealed under the floor. More importantly it offers easy access for the repair and maintenance of waterproofing membranes. The use of Buzon Pedestal reduces the weight bearing loads on concrete slabs by eliminating the use of sand and cement mortar beds. The Buzon

Pedestal incorporates a patented slope-correcting device, which compensates for a substrate fall of 0-5%, to provide a perfectly level floor finish. The pedestals are extremely strong as they are precision-engineered from 4mm thick recycled polypropylene and capable of supporting loads of more than 1000kg per pedestal.

Buzon’s 3rd generation Pedestal was specifically imported to be used on this project. The BC Series Pedestal adopts a new method of independent spacer tabs which are fixed to the head of the pedestal and are able to rotate 360 degrees, to accommodate any shape of paver, such as the hexagonal pavers used in this project.

The edgy apartments all have a private balcony, and many have views of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The careful selection of materials and contemporary approach has revitalised the precinct, with Albert Tower providing an exciting architectural proposition for Melbourne.

GREEN OASISA comprehensive irrigation system by Design Landscapes is giving ‘life’ to the One Central Park building in Sydney.

PROJECTS GUIDEwww.outdoordesign.com.au AUSTRALIAN SHOWCASE

M uch has been published recently about what makes Fraser Property Australia and Sekisui House’s

One Central Park development so special. Regarded as a ‘living mall’, behind the defining green facade lies an extensive irrigation system that gives the building its life. Reminiscent of a mad scientists lab nestled deep within the building’s basement, the irrigation infrastructure continuously monitors, feeds and waters the 1200m2 of green walls and 4200 m2 of garden beds held within 23 green wall panels and 2600 individual planter boxes.

Design Landscapes Pty Ltd designed and constructed the system, post concept design stage, to provide irrigation water to the green walls and planter boxes located on the East Tower (33 levels) and West Tower (17 levels), the building lobby, surrounding landscape podiums, ground floor terraces and the French Stairs as they lead down from Chippendale Green into the retail precinct. Water is drawn from a dedicated on-site water treatment plant, which incorporates potable water connection contingencies ready to accommodate any temporary shortfall in treated water supply.

Two dual pump sets (one for green walls and one for planter boxes) provide the 18000 kpa head of pressure necessary to pump water up the 33 storeys - the dual system comprising of a primary and

backup pump. Adjacent to the pump sets are four fertigation injection pumps (one per mainline) that inject both liquid fertiliser and selected herbicides/chemicals into the irrigation mainlines. Each unit is calibrated to provide precisely dosed volumes of fertiliser to the green walls or planter box plant material .

The Design Landscapes in-house hydraulics team installed a maze of specifically manufactured 75 mm high pressure mainlines through the buildings internal risers, with 19 kilometres of 25 mm lateral lines and 27 kilometres of drip lines delivering water to the individual planter boxes and green walls. Each of the 23 green wall panels has a different configuration of lateral lines and drip emitters with each line (up to 10 per panel) being switched via an independent solenoid for precise control. Each line is then set to different run durations so that the whole of the wall receives an equal volume of water.

The computer ‘brains’ is one more typically utilized in golf course irrigation due to the uncompromising demands of commanding more than 270 smart decoder electrical solenoid valves. Performance design modifications to the core program provides the ability for recalibration of the flow control sensors to interpret the significantly lower level of water flows associated with One

Central Park requirements. The control system provides significant management capabilities such as full control via the building’s central management system, ability to send alarms via text message, evapotranspiration sensitivity, full remote real time monitoring and amendment capabilities and high flow alarms. A secondary alarm system installed alongside the main system and integrated into the master program undertakes the single task of remote alarm notification of a low / no flow event.

In conjunction with the contract for the irrigation system Design Landscapes Pty Ltd was engaged to supply and install in excess of 2100 m3 of specially blended soil and approx. 55000 plants to the buildings 2600 planter boxes. The majority of the plant material was installed via swing stages on the outside of the building and the soil was specially developed to suit the plant selection and to provide long term life-cycle capabilities, given the planter boxes access restrictions. As water and nutrients flow throughout the building up to 6 times a day the landscape continues to flourish and the buildings become ‘green’.

www.outdoordesign.com.auEXEMPLARY PROJECTS

I n 2014, Urban Art Projects (UAP) was called upon to design and fabricate road rest stops at 11 different locations

throughout the Pilbara region in West Australia. These locations included: Halfway Bridge; Hamersley Gorge; Old Onslow Township; Robe River; 40 Mile; Miaree Pool; West Peawah; FMG Rail Lookout; 6 Mile; Cape Keraudren; and Marble Bar Road. UAP had the role of lead consultant for the project.

The design called for shelter structures with no aesthetic limitations. Shelters had to meet all appropriate Australian Standards, including notably cyclonic wind loads. The shelters also required seating for at least eight people and some locations required toilet facilities and waste disposal systems. Universal access to all shelters was mandatory.

UAP engaged Australian designer Kylie Bickle, who created a concept for a modular shelter system suiting specific requirements on each site. These shelters will incorporate artworks from local indigenous artists, which were selected through a collaborative workshop with FORM.

The challenge of this project was to discern themes that result in the creation of a tangible sense of place within contrasting settings. The Pilbara Road rest stop sites are positioned within strikingly different landscapes, but for reasons of economy and practicality a single response was proposed, with considerable scope for adaptation to each location.

The first theme is Shelter. On a purely functional level, the designs will provide relief from the elements of sun, wind and torrential rain.

The second theme is Reflection. On an intuitive level, the designs will highlight and enhance the experience of the elements as manifest in the landscape by providing ‘pools’ of cool shade; utilising sunlight to create decorative overlays; blending into the landscape by day; illuminating with vibrant LED colour at night; and remaining high and dry during periodic flooding.

Indigenous Connection - symbols, as seen in Australian Aboriginal art, are the visual representation or recording of significant information. A series of concentric circles

represents a meeting place, campsite or waterhole. A series of parallel lines represent a journey, a path or a means to get there

The third theme is Connection. Many Indigenous artists express their deep connection to country by documenting the landscape features of their ancestral lands. As we become more accustomed to viewing the planet through satellite imagery, this representation of topography within Aboriginal artworks becomes self evident.

The overarching form of the designs manifests the concept of connection; the road stops themselves being modern day meeting places for people journeying through the Pilbara. Local Aboriginal heritage will also be specifically represented within the designs through the integration of artwork overlays.

There are three primary features expressed within the designs: gentle, undulating curves; waterhole forms; and raised platforms.

The success of the designs lies in the simplicity and practicality of a component system that meets the requirements of the brief in regard to durability, suitability and

ROAD REST STOPSThese road rest stops in the Pilbara region create a tangible sense of place within contrasting settings, and are successful due to their simplicity and practicality.

adaptability. Extensive consideration has been given to the logistics of the road stop structures, including the potential for variation between sites and ground conditions.

For this reason all components, including footings and floors have been designed as pre-fabricated components to be delivered to site and installed quickly, with minimal ground work preparation (levelling and compacting only) This eliminates the need to pour in situ concrete in remote locations, and minimises impact on the Pilbara landscape. Should the future need arise, components can be disassembled, relocated or completely removed.

The Shelter design plays an important role in placing the Pilbara at the forefront

of community development in Western Australia, ensuring it becomes a recognised destination with strong local distinctiveness, in addition to providing a vibrant cultural life for residents and visitors. The development and implementation of well considered, unified artworks across the different sites will provide positive social and cultural dividends.

PROJECTS GUIDEwww.outdoordesign.com.au AUSTRALIAN SHOWCASE

T he transformation of Kew Cottages into an inner suburban oasis of residential living was completed in late 2014.

Greenlines Gardenware supplied several kilometres of its galvanised edging for use in the general streetscape including along paths, in playgrounds and in the gardens of the houses.

Located a stone’s throw away from the Yarra River in Kew, Victoria, the development is stylish with contemporary architecture, and is surrounded by sweeping parkland. It has a unique feel, especially given that it’s only 10 minutes from the Melbourne CBD.

A durable, versatile and long-lasting type of edging was required for this project. FormBoss™ was chosen as it delivers on all those points and saved a considerable amount of time and money on installation compared to flat bar steel for example.

Greenlines Gardenware was called upon to supply the FormBoss™ steel edging system. The galvanised 100mm profile

of 2.0mm gauge, with the rolled top edge of 6.5mm was used throughout the whole project. These edges were installed to define bitumen paths throughout the landscaped areas, and in gardens to separate areas of rocks from mulch, or grass.

The clean and sweeping lines of the FormBoss™ steel edging complements the design and general aesthetics of the whole development, and gives clear definitions to the paths.

In addition to the edging, other key features of the project include the modern architecture and the abundant green spaces – which are home to trees that are more than a century old. The area also has plenty of bike and footpaths running through it.

L ocated at the new Lady Cilento Hospital in South Brisbane and funded by the George Gregan Foundation, this spectacular new

playspace was completed in November 2014.Designed and project managed by Ric

McConaghy (RMPL), the playscape was brought to life by the collaborative efforts of Art Dinouveau, Playscape Creations, and Wax Design, among others.

The design brief called for the creation of an all-abilities playspace for children attending the hospital and their carers. It is intended that children receiving treatment and their families can find a place of wonder and respite where they can play and engage with their environment and others.

“The design intent was to be sympathetic

and synergistic with the internal and external treatment of the hospital, designed by Conrad Gargetts, and to ensure play provision for all seven senses and engagement for all,” said Ric McConaghy.

All features of the project contribute to a holistic experience. There are both small and large elements included in the space with the hope that each child with find their favourite and share it with others.

Sculpted natural play elements include a Giant Tree Stump Cubby and Slide, a Bower Bird’s Bower complete with Giant Peg and Milk Bottle Top, a Hollow Log Tunnel and Climber, two Giant Ants and a Bougainvillea Pollen Dome Climber. Complementing these elements are magnificent Indigenous

artworks, a Bee Play rocker, natural planted areas, sound and discovery elements and a range of engaging play panels.

“Art Dinouveau was extraordinary on this project, working for months in advance to design and fabricate the incredible natural play sculptures and furniture,” said Ric. “Playscape Creations were equally brilliant on site during installation. These two Queensland companies, who had not worked together with RMPL before, collaborated superbly to create this space under very challenging site conditions.”

Sean Conway from Queensland Health was also an invaluable contact during preparation and construction as were the team from Lend Lease.

T he redevelopment of the Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre was completed

in October 2014 with Martin Kellock Pots and Planters supplying pots and jars with specified paint finishes for the internal landscaping.

The design brief called for the upgrade and expansion of the shopping centre with a new “market feel” fresh food section and a new building housing homewares and fashion retailers. The design incorporates a lot of natural timber, gardens and landscaping to reflect the lifestyle in the Sutherland Shire.

Martin Kellock Pots and Planters supplied 48 large ceramic jars sealed internally and finished externally with a ragged lime-wash paint effect developed in consultation with the client, Scentre Group Design.

The company also supplied 26 large lightweight composite pots sealed internally and finished externally with a rust paint effect.

All paint finishes were applied in the Martin Kellock Pots and Planters warehouse prior to delivery to the site.

The addition of the pots and jars adds a unique feel to the Miranda Shopping Centre and enhances the overall landscape – and shopping experience – of the complex.

U rban Edge is a high-end residential development that entails extensive landscaping, including pools with decks,

outdoor living/entertaining areas and lush tropical ‘dry gully’ planting features.

The Landscape Construction Company (tlcc) was engaged by the client, Pradella, to carry out the soft and hard landscape construction works encompassing all of the outdoor elements.

Located on Blamey Street in Kelvin Grove, Brisbane Queensland, the Kelvin Grove Urban Village project was completed in July 2014.

The client provided fully documented landscape design plans, with tlcc working closely with the Pradella construction team to deliver the project ahead of time and under budget.

The aim of the project was to provide lush, tropical entertaining areas with a ‘resort’ feel for the residents of this high-end apartment complex. The client complimented tlcc on the company’s ability to bring the design intent to fruition.

The level of quality workmanship achieved by tlcc was further vindicated by the presentation of the Commercial 4 Landscape Award for Excellence at the 2014 Landscape Queensland Industries Inc. Annual Awards. This category recognises outstanding workmanship for projects in the $500k to $1 million price range.

tlcc provided all of the soft and hard landscaping including custom fabricated steel structures, Danpalon shade shelters, suspended coloured concrete pathways, off-form concrete walls, recycled composite decking and seating units to pool and common areas, and podium softscapes.

BodPave® 85 is available in a choice of colours – green, black or natural, to suit the aggregate fill being used, or to blend with the grass and has been engineered to offer high load bearing performance up to 400 tonnes/m², providing excellent structural integrity.

The positive mechanical interlock and integral ground spikes simplify installation and provide a solid structure for the subsequent grass/gravel fill. BodPave® 85 offers a host of additional features, such as cell ‘castellations’ for good tyre grip and lateral grass root growth and integral water reservoirs to ensure maximum grass growth in exposed areas and warmer climates. Manufactured from 100 per cent recycled polyethylene in 500mm x 500mm x 50mm interlocking grids (with 35mm ground spike), BodPave® 85 is ideal for emergency vehicle and heavy vehicle access lanes, car and bus parks, driveways, aviation applications and pedestrian or disabled access paths.

Rhino Grating’s flexible manufacturing systems allow functional installations to become artistic creations. Hard elements such as steel grating walkways can now be worked into shapes and fluid lines to suit the flow of the landscape.

Non-intrusive walk ways, viewing platforms, building facades and more can now be customised; allowing functional components to blend more organically with the landscape design.

IRRIGATION

IRRIGATION AUSTRALIA LIMITEDProfileIAL is Australia's peak irrigation organisation representing members from all aspects of the urban irrigation industry including water providers, irrigation design consultants, system installers and irrigation training services. IAL can assist you to develop or locate the skills you need to manage the irrigation and watering of your urban landscape.IAL's services include:• Information – journal; technical information• Training – Introduction to Irrigation; Irrigation Efficiency course;

Irrigation Essentials Training School; plus units of competency linked to qualifications

• Irrigation Industry Certification Scheme – professional career development for those in the irrigation industry; assist customers to locate competent irrigation services

• Assist you to locate competent irrigation consultancy, design, installation and trouble shooting services

Urban IrrigationGreen landscapes provide significant environmental, economic and health benefits for our urban communities including:• Environmental benefits such as: cooling effects on buildings

to reduce energy consumption; improving urban stormwater management by reducing peak flows and run-off pollutant loads; maintaining soil structure and preventing erosion; and maintaining biodiversity in urban areas.

• Social benefits such as: preventative healthcare including stress reduction, depression management and avoidance of obesity; childhood development in parks and open space; commons for social interaction and cohesion; and benefits associated with organised sport.

• Economic benefits such as increased property values.Urban irrigation is fundamental to achieving these urban 'green

space' benefits. A well designed, installed and operated irrigation system that delivers the right amount of water for your landscape, to the right place at the right time will maximise these benefits to you and your property and to the wider community.

Certification and StandardsIt is generally acknowledged that standards in the irrigation industry are increasingly important in influencing performance. At a practical level, improving standards will lead to improving the efficiency of irrigation water management. Industry standards are established through applying technical standards (i.e. performance standards for equipment), technical codes of practice (i.e. practices such as design, installation and operation), and professional standards.

IAL runs a certification program aimed at recognising the skills of those involved in the industry and improving professional standards. Certification is available for irrigation designers, contractors, installers, operators and managers. Certification is based on nationally-recognised competencies that form the basis of irrigation qualifications at entry, trade and supervisory level.

IAL is an observing member of the organisation for International Standards (ISO). As such, it can comment on draft standards currently being developed for the irrigation industry. It is the only Australian industry group representing irrigation at ISO.

2015 IAL Regional ConferenceThe 2015 IAL Conference will be held at the Panthers Convention Centre, in Penrith in far Western Sydney, on May 26 -28. The conference will centre on the peri-urban environment, an area of interest to every urban and regional population centre, as increasing populations place competing demands for water, and the way water, nutrients and energy are applied, on irrigators.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES:With an international emphasis on the conservation and management of fresh water and a natural progression from our involvement in large scale commercial landscape, irrigation and waterfeature projects, Design Landscapes has become a leader in the construction of stormwater harvesting and water management projects. Most commonly integrated within larger landscape projects the services encompass the collection, treatment, storage and re-use of megalitres of stormwater flow. Collection and treatment can incorporate natural biofilters and wetlands through to mechanical systems such as UV and hydraulic filtration, all of which allows the return of stormwater flow back into the landscape or reuse as an alternative to potable water.

OUR CITIES NEED MORE PLANTS AND TREES. They’re good for our health and productivity, keep cities cool and reduce pollution. People even heal faster when they’re around them. Yet, so often, plants and trees are overlooked when plans are drawn and concrete poured. The 202020 Vision is a national campaign to change this, by increasing our urban green space by 20% by 2020.
