Ventilation Guide

Ventilation matters: the Xpelair approachXpelair is one of the most recognised ventilation brands in the world. By ensuring that the air we breathe is clean, fresh and healthy, our innovative and energy-efficient air quality and air-comfort solutions are improving population health and well-being.

Indoor air quality has become a growing concern over recent years.

Radical changes in the design and construction methods of domestic buildings over the past two decades mean that our homes are better sealed and insulated. While they may be warmer and more energy efficient, they are unable to breathe naturally. This isn’t just bad for the building, it can be bad for health too. This lack of ventilation means that the level of pollutants in indoor air often exceeds those found in outdoor air.

Research estimates that air quality is two to five times worse indoors than out(1)

An independent indoor air quality study looked at the concentration of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) – that is allergies, irritants and toxic substances – in more than 120 UK homes. It found that only 9% of homes fell into the “normal” bracket; the remaining 91% had above the recommended TVOC concentration (2).

What causes such high levels of TVOCs?

Cooking and heating appliances, paints, solvents, carpets, furniture, cleaning products, electrical appliances, toiletries and even pets all release VOCs into the air. They are also naturally occurring in mould, which is itself one of the key factors associated with poor indoor air quality.

On top of this, outdoor contaminants from traffic and industry can enter buildings through ventilation systems. Although strict legislation, technological advances and economic change mean emissions from industrial sources have decreased, outdoor air pollution remains a problem.

What does this mean for our health?

Exposure to this potent mix of airborne pollutants within the home as a result of poor ventilation is being termed “Toxic Home Syndrome”. These microscopic particles are invisible to the naked eye. But, if we breathe them in, they can clutter on the lining of our lungs – and this can have a major influence on our health, comfort and well-being.

81% of people are at risk of suffering from a respiratory or dermatological condition because of poor air quality inside their home (3).

Given that people in Europe spend 90% of their time indoors (3), there is a very real need to take action.

The key to a healthy home is effective household ventilation.

We’re a global leader in the development and manufacture of ventilation products. We have earned an enviable reputation in world-class domestic ventilation over the last 65 years. Distributed in more than 80 countries, every one of our 300+ products is recognised for ease of installation, reliable performance and pioneering design. We continue to use our considerable experience and expertise as a springboard for ongoing innovation.

GX6: Still going strong after 65 years! The first photocopier, the first calculator, the first DVD player and the first iPad – Xpelair’s GX6 axial fan has witnessed them all! Celebrating 65 years since it first went into production, the GX6 is widely recognised as one of Xpelair’s most iconic products and has stood the test of time since it first went into production in 1952.

Xpelair GX6 models are purpose designed for use in kitchens and utility rooms and can be window or panel mounted as supplied, or wall-mounted using an optional wall kit. The range has a trickle ventilation facility which is available for background ventilation when not in use.

The GX6 has a number of sister products including WX6 (designed for wall installation), PX6 (designed for panel installation) and RX6 (designed for roof installation).

In addition, GX9 and GX12 fans offer higher ventilation rates and therefore are particularly suitable for commercial applications. They have the added benefit of intake and extract capability.

So Simple Installation and Maintenance

The Xpelair Natural Air 180 has been designed for easy installation and hassle-free handling. And, as it comes in two sections rather than one, it’s a lot more portable than all-in-one units. The metal case is 9.5kg and the EPP is 10kg.

• Site MVHR unit in cupboard or loft space.

• Use rigid aluminium, PVC, galvanised or semi-rigid plastic ducting.

• Every system comes with full installation and user manuals.

Stage 1Remove the metal jacket from the unit. There are 8 screws in total – 3 for the front door, 5 for the lid.

Stage 2Mount the rear chassis on the wall using 4 screws (4 mounting points).

Stage 3Refit the EPP body into the metal jacket.

Stage 4Refit the lid and door.

Key features:

Control Panel

Although the Natural Air 180 is designed to work for continuous trouble-free operation, it can also be tailored to individual needs using the control panel. Energy can be conserved by switching to night-time mode and holiday mode, which employs trickle ventilation overnight, during holidays or when the property is vacant. The system can also be purged whenever required by using boost switching. Summer bypass control and the active humidity setting enable the unit to adjust to warmer temperatures or rising humidity. The system also performs diagnostics and displays advisory codes to help technicians maintain the unit.

Fans you can forget about

Purpose-designed for trouble-free continuous operation. Rigid powder-coated steel housing prevents corrosion and prolongs life. Forward-curved impellers are specifically designed for optimal efficiency.

Worry-free filter

Control panel tells user when filter needs changing. Set for 2 to 12-month cycle – run-time not lapsed-time, so unaffected if unit is switched off. Cheaper to replace than many other filters on the market, yet just as effective.

Clever humidity control

Unique, active humidistat reacts in real-time to gradual increases in humidity – perfect for even the smallest wet room. Flow rate is boosted only as needed, minimising energy costs and further reducing acoustic output. No more nuisance tripping as night-time temperatures drop. You set the humidity threshold to suit conditions – factory setting for boost is a 4% humidity rise in 5 minutes.

Natural Air 180 MVHRThe Xpelair Natural Air 180 MVHR system brings a fresh perspective in more ways than one. No other MVHR system gives you more built-in flexibility for customisation to meet non-standard situations. Coupled with its compact design and suitability for whole-house ventilation, including wetrooms, the Xpelair Natural Air 180 delivers classic MVHR benefits for apartments and small to medium houses.
