SM Tech Co., Ltd. (CEO Cheolsoo yang) was established in 2007 as an innovative

company handles from design, production, inspection, sales, education and

maintenance.

When change in fluid’s moving speed changes due to the reason of valve opening

or maneuver of pump from a pipeline, pressure wave occurs and the occurred

pressure wave is delivered through the pipeline to give damage to the pipeline and

other equipment; this is known as water hammer.

Specializing in manufacturing water hammer prevention system

The reason of water hammer is important is because the pipeline is damaged. Due

to the ascending pressure of pipeline, the pump, valve, flange, structure, and duct

become damaged. Moreover, accidents may occur due to the big shock that

occurs when recombining after separating water column due to the negative

pressure.

However, the water hammer prevention equipment was invented through the years

of experience and research/development. Not only the water level signal is

analyzed but the pressure signal is analyzed as well to operate accordingly to each

situation. Moreover, the equipment prevents operating unnecessity of discharge

solenoid valve and air compressor to acquire safety in any situation.

automatic cleaning functions to prevent breakdown. Also, it can be used in rapid

even polluted water.

In case of idle pump's active operation, sudden stoppage of pump due to

malfunction or blackout or at rapid valve opening, fluid inside the pipeline changes

to unsteady flow condition due to large pressure increase or decrease by rapid fluid

velocity change inside supply pipeline. At such unsteady fluid condition by sudden

change in fluid velocity, pressure shock wave travels back and forth between pipes

and inner pipeline pressure drops below water's saturated vapor pressure according

to pipeline profile to form vapor cavity and subsequently eventuate column

separation. If inner pipeline pressure falls below atmospheric pressure, pipeline

collapse can be eventuated and in case of pressure reaching beyond device's

allowed pressure limit due to high pressure generated from re-combination of vapor

cavity separated columns, there would be significant damage threats not only on

the pipelines but also on other facilities such as pumps and valves.

Such water hammer originated damage can be listed as in case of accident from

pump motor's accelerated reverse cycle due to conveying fluid's reverse flow by

sudden pump power cut off, in case of damage from pump, valve, pipeline and

subsidiary facility breakage due to pressure increase and in case of pipeline rupture

due to column re-combination at pressure normalization after pipeline collapse and

column separation according to inner pipeline pressure increase or decrease.

Recently, pump facilities are gaining their capacity and size with more complex fluid

supplying systems having large diameter and long distance pipelines where water

hammer is becoming a more serious problem. Unlike other accident causes, water

hammer originated accidents can potentially implicate damage on entire pump

The basic operational principle of the closed expansion tank for preventing Water

hammering is the same as that of the air chamber. However, if the capacity of the

closed expansion tank is large, there exists the possibility of problems in

manufacturing and maintenance. A typical air chamber has a structure whereby air

contacts and merges with water. On the other hand, a closed. It is made of general

rubber (Butyl Rubber, EPDM). Because a hanging rubber pocket with an internal

installation structure is used, the force always acts in the direction of gravity, and the

rubber pocket can be damaged if even a bit of dust gets inside it.

If the internal rubber pocket is damaged, air may infiltrate the water, or be released

out through the pipe. If compression fluid, air or nitrogen disappears from the inside,

the closed expansion tank cannot provide any function for Water Hammering,

except in the role as a simple water tank.

However, the exterior of the closed expansion tank is generally made of steel, thus it

is difficult to determine whether the internal diaphragm is operating properly or not.

A "Safety device-equipped airtight expansion tank" has a safety device to externally

monitor the internal diaphragm and ensure safe operation.
