More About Water for Hope

In the rural parts of the Ethiopia that sur-round Lake Langano, many are relying on a muddy river as a water source. Many women walk an hour to collect the water for their day, and they

walk an hour back to their home to use it. Organiza-tions like Water for Hope are putting wells in these communities to provide safe drinking water. David and Merrie Harding, our guides in Ethiopia, introduced our group to Yarid, a local orphan (he’s an adult now) who helps with site selection. They use a mechani-cal pulley system that drops a drill bit into the earth, slowly pumping out mud so that a well system can be put into place. They hire the local men to do this work. In this way, they are creating jobs in the com-munity. Some who have received the wells are using the runoff water to plant gardens; they thought of this idea on their own. This sort of relationship be-tween local communities and nongovernmental orga-nizations is what partnerships, are all about.

Clean water is crucial to the health of a community. Water is necessary for agriculture, which provides food for families. Water keeps people well, so that children can go to school, toddlers can live without disease, and mothers can be healthy. Clean water means no waterborne diseases. Water is bringing communities together.
