The whole territory of the Latvian part of the Baltic Sea is a

drainage basin. Into the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga coast,that is 500 kilometers,there flow114 small rivers. Overall,Latvia's territory is divided into 9 catchment basins (from theeast to the west):

Gauja basin

Salaca pool

Vidzeme coast seaside pool

Lielupe pool

Rivers

Humid climate, relatively flat terrain andthe geological structure of Latvia has

developed a dense network of rivers.Latvia has more than 12,400 rivers.

Latvia's rivers are geologically new. Thisvalley was formed 10-13 thousand yearsbefore the retreat of glaciers.

Major rivers: Gauja(452km), Daugava(352 km), Venta (178km), Lielupe (119km),Aiviekste (114km).

Largest river in the basin area: Gauja(24700km2), Aiviekste (9160km2), Lielupe

(8800km2), Gauja (7920km2).

LakesLatvia is a land rich inlakes.

The country has 2,256lakes that are largerthan 1ha.

The total area of thelakes is about 1,000km .

Latgale is the richest

region of lakes.

of the Latvian environmental policy. It hasalready achieved good results.

Completion of the sewage treatment works inLiepaja, Cesis, Strenci and Ligatne.

The total amount of wastewater has reducedtwice.
