EXPLANATION OF THREE UNIQUE WATCHNIGHT TRADITIONS | EXPLICACIÓN DE TRES TRADICIONES ÚNICAS DE LA NOCHEBUENA Rev. Jen Fenner

• Watchnight had its beginning in the 7ny Chris7an denomina7on of Moravians of today’s Czech Republic who celebrated the first Moravian Covenant service in 1733. It was a worship service intended to provide a 7me for a Chris7an to soberly reflect upon the year about to pass and simultaneously make prepara7on inclusive of covenants with God for the New Year. John Wesley, the Father of Methodism, incorporated this service idea into the denomina7on. It included the Wesleyan Covenant Prayer which we will pray at the start of 2021 tonight.

• Freedom’s Eve: First celebrated on the Eve December 31, 1862: “A service of watchfulness awai@ng the dawn of emancipa@on” The first Watchnight Service in America was held in 1770 at the Old St. George Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is linked to the Black American Church because on December 31, 1862, the enslaved black folks in an7cipa7on of the official end to slavery, congregated in homes, churches, and even in hiding to be in an aWtude of praise and adora7on to God for the expected Emancipa7on Proclama7on enacted and to be issued by President Abraham Lincoln a[er midnight the next day beginning January 1, 1863. Watchnight is the Black American community is historically referred to as “Freedom Eve.” When freed slaves were repatriated to present day Liberia on the west coast, they took this worship tradi7on with them with even deeper reverence and meaning. (adapted from the wri7ng of Judson Addy, Cer7fied Lay Speaker)

• A Service of Thanksgiving and Recommitment at the Start of the New Year. This tradi7on was first taken to Liberia and later celebrated throughout Africa and the Diaspora

CALL TO WORSHIP | LLAMADO A LA ADORACIÓN

Rev. Prince Decker: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Rev. Prince Decker: Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp to put it under a bucket, but on a lampstand where it gives light for everyone in the house. And you, like the lamp, must shed light among your fellow men, so that they may see the good you do, and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

THE OPENING PRAYER | ORACIÓN DE APERTURA

Rev. Jen Fenner: Almighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WATCHNIGHT SERVICE LITANY | LETANÍA DEL SERVICIO DE NOCHEBUENA Led by Alethea Long-Green of Epiphany Episcopal Church

O God, as was customary of our parents and ancestors, we come to this Watch Night vigil to be with you, in your house, as we usher out the old year and welcome the dawning of a new year.

People: We come, thanking you for guidance and direc\on. Go before us, O God, and draw us into the future where you are.

Our slave ancestors watched that night long ago for the signing of the Emancipa7on Proclama7on. Lord, keep us awake and alert as we follow in the light of your Word, searching for the good news of the gospel, and the comfor7ng signs of your love in this world.

People: We thank you for watching over us and caring for us through the old year, as we walked in the light of your love. We thank you for your promises of peace, healing, and jus\ce.

We come, O God, with great expecta7ons and great hopes. Keep these fires kindled within us that we may watch and wait, and once more feel your presence. Let us know your power as we embark upon this journey.

People: You have led us in the past. Guide us now, and always that we might choose to do your will and follow your way. We are pilgrims in a barren land.

We give you praise, O God, for your goodness and mercy; for life, health and friends, and for the many blessings you always send. Above all, we thank you for Jesus Christ, who li[s our hopes, guides us in the Way, in this New Year, and in years to come.

People: All praise, honor, glory, and thanks to you, our God, through Jesus Christ our risen Savior and Lord.

Let us Pray: Rev. Prince Decker: Most gracious and worshipful God, you have reconciled us to

yourself through Jesus Christ your Son, and called us to new life in him: Grant that we, who begin this year in his Name, may complete it to his honor and glory: who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION | LA CONFESIÓN Led by Rev. Prince Decker

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have le` undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant stands and says: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING | PRIMERA LECTURA BÍBILCA Ecclesiastes | Eclesiastés 3:1-13 Read by Ma7lda Jones, Epworth UMC

For everything there is a season, and a 7me for every maoer under heaven: 2 a 7me to be born, and a 7me to die; a 7me to plant, and a 7me to pluck up what is planted; 3 a 7me to kill, and a 7me to heal; a 7me to break down, and a 7me to build up; 4 a 7me to weep, and a 7me to laugh; a 7me to mourn, and a 7me to dance; 5 a 7me to throw away stones, and a 7me to gather stones together; a 7me to embrace, and a 7me to refrain from embracing; 6 a 7me to seek, and a 7me to lose;

a 7me to keep, and a 7me to throw away; 7 a 7me to tear, and a 7me to sew; a 7me to keep silence, and a 7me to speak; 8 a 7me to love, and a 7me to hate; a 7me for war, and a 7me for peace. 9 What gain have the workers from their toil? 10 I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. 11 He has made everything suitable for its 7me; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. 12 I know that there is nothing beoer for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; 13 moreover, it is God’s gi[ that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil.

SECOND SCRIPTURE | READING SEGUNDA LECTURA BÍBILCA Psalm | Salmo 8 Read byMaurice Fox, member of Epiphany Episcopal Church

1 O Lord, our Sovereign, how majes7c is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; 4 what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? 5 Yet you have made them a liole lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Sovereign, how majes7c is your name in all the earth!

HYMN OF PRAISE | HIMNO DE ALABANZA To God Be the Glory (UMH#98) Eric Paździora on organ

To God be the glory, great things he hath done: So loved he the world that he gave us his son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, And opened the lifegate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

Oh, perfect redemp7on, the purchase of blood, To ev’ry believer the promise of God. The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son, But purer, and higher, and greater will be Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

EPISTLE READING | LECTURA DE EPÍSTOLA 2 Corinthians 5:17-6:2 | 2 Corin7os 5:17-6:2 Read by Nikki Wilkins-Jones member of Epiphany Episcopal Church

17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new crea7on: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconcilia7on; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not coun7ng their trespasses against them, and

entrus7ng the message of reconcilia7on to us. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 6 As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, “At an acceptable 7me I have listened to you, and on a day of salva7on I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable 7me; see, now is the day of salva7on!

HYMN OF PRAISE | HIMNO DE ALABANZA Amazing Grace (UMH#378) Musician?

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch; like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!

The Lord hath promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and por7on be As long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we first begun.

THE GOSPEL READING | LECTURA DEL EVANGELIO Maohew | Mateo 25:31-46 Read by Maurice Fox member of Epiphany Episcopal Church

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the na7ons will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the le[. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that ar blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the founda7on of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was

sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,[a] you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his le[ hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR | CELEBRANDO EL AÑO NUEVO Te Deum Laudamus (mute your device and sing along)

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlas7ng. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim con7nually do cry:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabbath; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee.

The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, the Father, of an infinite majesty, thine adorable, true, and only Son, also the Holy Ghost the Comforter.

Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlas7ng Son of the Father.

When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sioest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge.

We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlas7ng.

Pastor and People: I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you, praised for you or cri\cized for you. Let me be full, let me be empty.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. By the bap7sm of his suffering, death and resurrec7on, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, & made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

[When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this, as o\en as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”]

[And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.]

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Cristo ha muerto; Cristo ha resucitado; Cristo vendrá.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gi[s of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By Your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world un7l Christ comes in final victory and we feast at the heavenly banquet table. Through your Son Jesus Christ with the

INVITATION TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION | INVITACIÓN PARA RECIBIR EL SACRAMENTO DE LA SANTA CENA

HYMN DURING COMMUNION | HIMNO DURANTE LA SANTA CENA Father Let Me Dedicate Eric Paździora on the organ

Father, let me dedicate, all this year to Thee, In whatever worldly state Thou wilt have me be: Not from sorrow, pain or care, freedom dare I claim; This alone shall be my prayer, Glorify Thy Name.

Can a child presume to choose where or how to live? Can a Father’s love refuse all the best to give? More Thou givest every day than the best can claim Nor withholdest aught that may Glorify Thy Name.

If Thou callest to the cross, and its shadow come, Turning all my gain to loss, shrouding heart and home; Let me think how Thy dear Son to His glory came, And in deepest woe pray on, “Glorify Thy Name.”

If in mercy thou wilt spare joys that yet are mine; If on life, serene and fair, brighter rays may shine; Let my glad heart, while it sings, Thee in all proclaim, And what e’er the future brings, Glorify Thy Name.

LEV 1 LiL Every Voice and Sing Li[ every voice and sing, 7ll earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on 7ll victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bioer the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, 7ll now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our na7ve land.
