Hello Marathon Teachers and Participants,

My name is Kelly Burleson and I am the Race Director for the Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon.

It is time to start preparing your school to be a part of the 2018 Oklahoma City MemorialKids Marathon. The Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon, presented by INTEGRIS, will beSunday, April 29, 2018, in downtown Oklahoma City. Our goal is to encourage children tolive a healthy lifestyle, while teaching the Lessons Learned that grew from the OklahomaCity bombing on April 19, 1995. It is a Run to Remember and a race to show that we caneach make a difference in this world by teaching service, honor and kindness to our youth…our future leaders.

This year we expect over 4,000 children to log 25 miles leading up to the race and completethe last 1.2 miles of their Marathon on April 29. This race is unlike any other, because it alsoeducates children of the history and mission of the Oklahoma City National Memorial andgives them the opportunity to commit to the Oklahoma Standard. Registration has opened, and now is the time to go online at OKCMarathon.com to sign up, and start inspiring childrento set and achieve goals. The earlier you get involved, the more time you have to encourage, educate, and enjoy this event with your students.

Keep us posted on your progress by emailing stories and photos to [email protected].

Enjoy your training and we will see you at the start line!

Training and Fundraising Ideas For School Teams

Training

Have a healthy tip of the week announced over the PA system each day. Encourage studentsto journal how they’ve incorporated this tip into their daily lives and share these journalentries during class meetings and at school assemblies.

Have training buddies – Pair students in younger classes with students in older classes toget together once a week and run/walk together. This could be done with reading buddies.Older students can serve as mentors and set a positive example as readers and as healthykids.

Create a school walking club before and after school. Ask parents to volunteer to overseestudents logging miles for 30 minutes outside or in the gym.

Students can log miles as a warm up in PE class.

Use training as a brain break – measure off ¼ mile paths in the hall or outside and go walkthem (or run them outside) when students have been engaged in learning for a long periodof time and need to wiggle.

Create a classroom bulletin board (or a school bulletin board or wall) to display mileagegoals. Celebrate these at a school wide assembly weekly or monthly. Offer small rewards ateach major mileage goal until 25 is reached.

Fundraising for Registration Costs

Partner with a local business or your partner in education. Ask them to sponsor kids whowant to participate, but cannot afford the registration fee. Have members from this businesscome walk/run with kids during the day to demonstrate healthy adult role models.

Students can ask for sponsors to donate a certain amount of money per mile or ½ mile theywalk/run in order to reach $15.

Ask PTO to sponsor a class or the whole school.

Organize a school fundraiser (carnival, school auction, car wash, garage sale, etc.) to coverregistration costs.

Check our website for new training/educational materials coming later this year!
