Household Waste Management and Bin Services

The City of Swan are committed to improving your environment and minimising waste charges. You can help us make a difference through avoiding unnecessary waste, and by reusing items and recycling responsibly.

Shop at stores that sell minimally packaged products, or zero waste buying options. Plan meals in advance and write a list of ingredients to take with you shopping. Don’t buy something when you can borrow it.

AVOID

Many things that we may first think of as waste actually can be reused, reprocessed or recycled into new materials or items. Before you place an item in either of your kerbside bins or your pre-booked verge collection, consider if there is another, more sustainable option. Recycling as much of your ‘waste’ as possible is a beneficial and important activity. You’ll help us achieve the best results by disposing of your recyclables via the correct methods.

Reuse and Recycle

Recyclables

Anything you place in your General Waste Bin is sent to landfill. Placing items which can be recycled, reprocessed or are classed as hazardous into your General Waste Bin or pre-booked verge collection can result in lost resources and environmental damage.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENTAND BIN SERVICES

There are many household waste & recyclable items that CANNOT be placed in either your General Waste Bin or your Recycling Bin. Household Hazardous Waste items including aerosol cans and batteries have been known to cause fires in collection vehicles and sorting facilities, and therefore must not be placed in either of your kerbside bins. For a full list of Household Hazardous Wastes and disposal options, see the back page.

Soft Plastics are commonly used for food packaging and can be scrunched up easily in your hand. This type of plastic CANNOT go into your yellow-top Recycling Bin. Instead, it can be placed in REDcycle bins located at most major supermarkets.

To be sure you are placing the right thing in the right bin, check the A-Z guide on the following page. For more information on waste, recycling and household hazardous waste, visit rgang.org.au or go torecycleright.wa.gov.au for further information on recycling.
