Minutes of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Meeting, March 5, 2004
1. Dean Edward Macias called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm.
2. The faculty voted to approve the minutes of November 7, 2003.
3. Prof. Nancy Berg of the Curriculum Committee introduced the vote on the March 1, 2004 Curricular Changes. She thanked Patricia Harder for her hard work in reducing the length of these documents. Prof Berg said to send all typographic corrections to Patricia Harder. The faculty voted to approve the Curricular Changes.
4. Prof. David Lawton of the Faculty Council presented the 2004 nominations for standing committees of the faculty, and both he and Dean Macias thanked all for allowing themselves to be nominated. The faculty voted to approve the slate of nominations.
5. Steve Hoffner, the Washington University liaison to Metrolink, reported on the progress of the 8-mile Metrolink extension that is now being constructed to the north of campus. There will be two stops at the Hilltop campus, at Skinker and at Big Bend, and a stop at West Campus. Due to unanticipated delays, the projected completion date is now mid-2006. Washington U. has had significant input into all phases of the design, from security to public art. Joe Ackerman has provided significant help on resolving concerns about the potential impact of the electromagnetic field on nearby labs. This spring, temporary bridges will be placed at Skinker and Big Bend and this may impact traffic, as both roads will occasionally be restricted to two lanes.
Several faculty expressed an interest in retaining the Lindell/Skinker stoplight, but Mr. Hoffner said this had not yet been resolved as Lindell neighbors are opposed to it.
6. Dr. Gina Frey gave a report on the activities of the Teaching Center, and its staff of 4.5 FTEs. Prof. Frey summarized the resources provided to faculty and graduate students, providing a long list of collaborative projects under way with various departments, including the Chemistry department's Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) initiative. There was discussion about whether we should make teacher training mandatory for new assistant professors; currently this is at the discretion of each department. There was also a suggestion to making periodic teacher training mandatory for both junior and senior faculty.
7. Dean Jim McLeod reported on the College of Arts & Sciences. He noted that a current topic is how to monitor student progress toward graduation. Admissions decisions are under way; we have a strong pool, and we'll have a lower admit rate than last year. The April Welcome Program should bring many admitted students to campus; you can expect them to visit your classes.
8. Dean Robert Thach reported on the Graduate school. Our applications have remained constant from last year, which was the largest applicant pool on record. However, international applications are down 30% and domestic applications have risen. There was some discussion about the difficulties caused by visa problems facing grad students; Dean Thach indicating that we are working with the AAU to lobby on these issues. The departments of English, German, Philosophy, Psychology, and Writing have seen increases. Offers have now been sent out. The quality of our pool is outstanding. We have over 400 Olin fellows, the best pool to date.
9. Prof. Robert Lamberton reported on the Faculty Senate Council, describing current activities including a discussion of retiree health-care costs, a discussion of progress in addressing the persistent issue of alleged gender pay inequities at the Medical School and a report from the Bookstore Advisory Committee.
10. Dean Robert Wiltenburg reported on University College. Spring enrollment is 2875, up 8 percent. 520 of the students are Washington U. employees taking advantage of reduced tuition. There are 1300 adult students overall. The number of graduate students has increased to 270 from 220 last year. Of the University College faculty, 15-20% are tenure-track faculty, but many more of the instructors are connected to the university in some way (graduate students, adjuncts, etc.). In Fall and Spring, 60-65% are university connected, and in summer, 80-85% are. The undergraduate diploma offered is the B.S., not the B.A.; all but one of the graduate degrees are granted through the Graduate School.

New Courses L43 Gen St 1XX First Year Seminar on Community Medicine (1 unit, no attribute) This two-semester sequence for first-year students will examine the physician's contribution to the larger community as well as the role of a physician's professional community in supporting his or her work. We will be especially interested in how physicians carve out time, energy and interest in being community leaders and agents of change. Pass/Fail 1 unit. L35 B Heb 348 Medieval Hebrew Travelogues (TH) Medieval Hebrew literature includes a wide range of narratives, many of which are commonly classified as chronicles, travelogues, biographies or diaries. In this course, we will explore a variety of authors and narratives from the 9th to the 17th centuries, originating from Muslim and Christian lands, the Middle East and Europe. We will ask to what extent these texts mirror the personal experiences of their authors and to what extent they must be regarded as literary fictions. In addition, we will discuss the question of how pre-modern Jewish writers reflected on history. All texts will be read in English translation. Prerequisite: JNE 208F, or instructor's permission. Credit 3 unit(s). New Minors L64 Philosophy—Neuroscience—Psychology (TH) Philosophy - Neuroscience - Psychology (PNP) is an interdisciplinary program that provides an opportunity to examine the mind from multiple perspectives. In addition to philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology, PNP draws upon other disciplines whose investigations contribute to understanding cognition, such as biology, linguistics, education, and cultural anthropology. Each of the disciplines employs different modes of inquiry to examine various aspects of cognition. For example, from the perspective of neuroscience, investigating the workings of the mind means investigating the workings of the brain; from the perspective of linguistics, we gain insight into the mind by investigating one of its most complex products, namely language; and from the perspective of cultural anthropology, we gain insight into the mind's workings by looking at the workings of society. The goal of the major is for students to develop an understanding of the differences among the approaches used by these disciplines, and an appreciation of how they can provide converging perspectives on issues in cognition. L33 Psychology - Memory Studies (TH, SS) To offer students an inter-disciplinary introduction to the study of memory that combines approaches from the social sciences and the humanities. To show students that a common set of concepts and findings are relevant to topics as diverse as mechanisms of individual memory, amnesia, cognitive aging, neural bases of memory, autobiographical memory, personal past and self- representation, eye-witness testimony, repressed memories, the "arts of memory" and mnemotechnics, oral literature, literacy and its cognitive effects, the construction of collective narratives, connections between self and history, political uses of the past and the self and autobiography in literary representation. GRADUATE SCHOOL-WIDE TEACHING REQUIREMENT FOR PH.D. CANDIDATES
The Graduate Council believes that a crucial component in our training of successful scholars should be helping every graduate student become an effective teacher. Of course, the attributes associated with good teaching are also those of good scholarship: the ability to communicate ideas clearly and even vividly; the careful distinction between what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable evidence within an intellectual community; the recognition that even worthy objects of scholarly endeavor must compete with other, no less worthy, topics of research interest, given the limited resources available (whether those resources are publishing capital or hours in any given semester). The scholar who has received effective training in pedagogy and sufficient experience in front of a class will also become a colleague who ably represents his or her research in the scholarly symposium or, more locally, the departmental coffee room. If teaching is not separable from any of our academic tasks, it also cannot be presumed thereby to require no special training or experience. For that reason, we strongly encourage every Ph.D. program to provide teaching opportunities as they are appropriate to individual disciplines.
Central to effective teaching is the communication of knowledge and ideas to others. Our Ph.D. candidates should gain, during their graduate training, that experience by satisfying two formal teaching requirements. The requirements exist at two levels to emphasize differences in communication skills that come with different levels of responsibility within any field. At the basic level, is the communication of fundamental elements of knowledge, or training in basic skills, such as can occur in introductory or lower-level undergraduate courses. At the advanced level, the communication more likely concerns ideas: their development, their evaluation, their defense, and their formal testing through argumentation or experimentation, such as can occur in upper-level courses, graduate seminars, and graduate-level journal clubs or formal discussion groups.
A unit of teaching may be defined broadly as an hour spent communicating with a group of students or scholars. As such, holding one-on-one office hours, grading exams, or note-taking, while often part of Teaching Assistantship duties, should not count toward the formal accumulation of teaching units.
Ph.D. candidates should accumulate a minimum of 14 units of teaching experience at the basic level. There are many ways these units could be obtained, such as giving an actual lecture in an undergraduate class, conducting discussion sections, introducing /interpreting laboratory exercises or conducting formal help sessions.
Ph.D. candidates should also accumulate at least 4 units of teaching experience at the advanced level. The Graduate School recognizes that opportunities for such experience will vary widely across the disciplines within the University, and so is flexible as to what experiences count toward this accumulation. For example, presenting one's research at a regularly scheduled colloquium or seminar that is attended by other graduate students and faculty, would satisfy one unit of advanced level teaching. Another

possibility would be presenting a paper at a conference, including conferences organized by scholarly societies as well as local conferences, such as the yearly Graduate Student Research Symposium at Washington University. Another possibility would be presenting and leading the discussion of a journal article in a journal club or formal discussion group at the graduate level. In certain cases lecturing in an advanced (300- level or 400-level) undergraduate class or running an advanced undergraduate laboratory might be appropriate.
The above examples of teaching at both the basic and advanced levels are by no means exhaustive or exclusive: there may be other types of excellent teaching or communication experiences which are discipline specific. Moreover, the appropriate group size or composition may vary from discipline to discipline. For these reasons, every graduate program is encouraged to draw up guidelines for meeting the graduate school requirement. This requirement does not preclude departments from creating additional discipline specific teaching requirements.
In meeting these requirements, graduate students will ideally have opportunities to learn the skills and practice the art of scholarly communication.
