Washington State Commission On / African American Affairs February 3, 2020 Zora Neale Hurston Growing up in the all-black town of Eatonville, Florida, Zora Neale Hurston was an accomplished author , anthropologist and filmmaker. She used Eatonville as the setting for many of her stories and it is the site for the annual Zora! Festival. Eatonville is also the first town in the U.S. to be Incorporated by African Americans. Studying at Howard University, Barnard College and Columbia University, she traveled extensively throughout the southern United States and Caribbean conducting anthropological and ethnographic research. Her study of African American and Caribbean cultural practices shed light about how these beliefs shaped black communities and folklore. As a writer for the Federal Writer's Project during the late 1930's, she gathered Information to add to Florida's historical and cultural collections, in addition to her own short stories, plays and novels. Hurston also picked up work as faculty at what is now North Carolina Central University and the Library of Congress. Her best known works, Their Eyes Were Watching God and autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road, achieved literary success, but by the time of her death in 1960, her works had fallen into obscurity . In 1975, an article published by The Color Purple author Alice Walker generated renewed interest In Hurston. Previously unreleased, her 1931 nonfiction work, Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" was published in 2018 as well as other folktales after being discovered in the Smithsonian Institute archives.
