Founded in 1857 Meeting on the Level Acting by the Plumb

Parting on the Square

Greetings from the East. We’ve got a heckuva great year planned for the Brothers, family and friends. I’m going to paint a pretty big target on myself and lay out what I want to get done during my year in the East, then my last article will go back and examine how I did. Talk big, walk big, Mason big! Don’t hold me to that, I’m still deciding on a “theme” for my term. The year Twenty-Seventeen is a milestone for Masonry. Three hundred years ago Freemason-ry “went public” to coin a phrase, on June 24, 1717 with the formation of the Grand Lodge of London and Westminster. Some things happened since then, both good and bad; a country called the USA split off from England, the Industrial Revolution, universal suffrage, a couple world wars, the invention and deployment of the largest collaborative effort in the history of mankind also known as the Internet. Oh, and my Lodge elected little old me to preside in the East for a year. And I think that last one is the most important of all, but I’m biased. On June 24, 2017 we are going to have a blow out party for the three-hundredth anniversary of the first Grand Lodge. I’m not sure exactly what we are going to do, but by golly we are going to do something. I just checked and that day is a Saturday so that helps. Save the date. Robert Burns Night. I refuse to be the Worshipful Master who had to cancel this glorious, popu-lar, successful event. The sticky wicket for us right now is selecting the proper venue that can accommodate the turnout we get and allows us to run the event the way we want. Our new space, while perfect for standard events and meetings, might be too limiting with the crowd we gather. We’ll get it sorted out and let everyone know the place and time. We might have to be creative with scheduling so look for this late January or early February. Save the date. We’re going to Hawaii. Most Worshipful Brother Mike Sanders told me about the Lodge in Hon-olulu that is welcoming to us Mainlanders, and when I mentioned this to my wife “Honey, there’s a Lodge in Hawaii that..” her eyes lit and and said “We’re going!” So, I guess we’re go-ing. I hope you all can join us. Look for this to happen early next year, when us Vancouverites are in the darkest depths of cold and rainy early spring. Save the date. Table Lodge. Ooohh I love me a good Table Lodge. I’m going to have as many Table Lodges of Instruction that I can. And not just the kind of Table Lodge you already know and love, I’ve got some special things planned that I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of. Some may be open to family and friends, I’ll let you know. Watch for these on our Special Meeting nights. Save the dates. Past Master pictures need to be hung up in the Lodge room. Should be easy, just a few nails, right? “Could be easy” are famous last words but I will make it happen. Save the wall space.

Saturday School. When I was coming up through the degrees I found it both helpful for the memory work and enriching for the fellowship meeting down at the Center on Saturday mornings. I really want the VMF to be a community center for us again so I will be down at the VMF every Saturday morning at roughly ten to help any brother with ritual work or just chat about what’s going on. From the Immediate Past Master This is the first contribution to the Trestle Board with more to follow: “In presenting the Apron to a Brother, we say that it is more ancient than the Golden Fleece or the Roman Eagle, more honorable than the Star and Garter, or any other order that might be conferred, etc. Let us examine the “Star and Garter” aspect of the Apron lecture. The Star and The Garter

These are two Orders. The Order of the Star originated in France, and was founded by John II. in 1350 in imitation of the recently instituted Order of the Garter in England. The name of the Order has allusion to the Star of Bethlehem, or the Star of the Magi. A star of some design, from five to sixteen points, forms a part of the symbolism in every Order of Knighthood. The Order of the Garter dates from about 1344. Its origin is not certain. Edward III. is said by some to have instituted it. Others say Richard I. at the siege of Acre, when he is said to have caused 26 Knights to wear thongs of blue leather around their legs. Another account is, that the Countess of Salisbury happened at a ball to drop her garter, and the King picking it up, presented it to her. Some of the company smiled, whereupon the King exclaimed "Honi Soit Qui Mal y pense" (Evil to him who evil thinks.) Immediately after this cir-cumstance this Order of the Garter was founded. It was founded in honor of the Holy Trinity--The Virgin Mary, St. Edward the Confessor and St. George. The last, who had become the tute-lary saint of England, was considered its special patron. It is known as the Order of St. George, as well as of the Garter. Its members are also known as Knights of St. George. The number of Knights was originally twenty-six, including the Sovereign, who is the Chief of the Order; but in 1786 an order was passed increasing the number to include all the princes of the Royal family, and illustrious foreigners on whom the Order might be conferred. The Garter is a dark blue ribbon, edged with gold, bearing the motto, "Honi Soit qui Mal y pense" (Evil to him who evil thinks) in gold letters, mounted with a gold buckle, and worn on the left leg below the knee. The mantle is of blue velvet; on the left breast is a star. The hood is of crimson velvet lined with white The hat is of black velvet with a plume of white ostrich feathers, in the center of which is a tuft of black heron's feathers, all fastened by a band of dia-monds. The "George" is a figure of St. George encountering a dragon, and is worn on the col-lar, while a lesser "George" pendant to a dark blue ribbon, is worn over the left shoulder. This Order is perhaps the best known of any except the Order of Knights Templar. In many re-spects The Garter and the Order of the Temple resemble each other. In comparing all these orders, The Golden Fleece, The Roman Eagle, and the other European orders of the Eagle, The Star and the Garter, Freemasonry may well claim to be more ancient than any or all of them; for in some form, well nigh akin to its present form, Masonry has exist-ed for many centuries.”

Researching the Internet, no reference can be found to “the Star and Garter” and a single or-

der. How this came about seems to be lost in the passage of time. Suffice it to say that our

Masonic Badge is of royal application and should be worn as such.

The next contribution will be on the several “Apron lectures” found throughout the various ju-

risdictions of Free Masonry.

Cystic Fibrosis GREAT STRIDES Fund Raiser

Sat May 13 2017

EASTER SHORT PARK

This message is going to past members of Levi’s Team. Registration is OPEN for the 2017 GREAT STRIDES event, which will take place on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 at Esther Short Park in Vancouver.

Thanks in large part to YOUR fundraising efforts, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been able to fund research and development of thera-pies which extend and improve the lives of CF patients like my son, Levi. I’m pleased to report that, some months ago, Levi began taking Orkambi, a CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) modulator, which was approved by the FDA in 2015. (Orkambi was approved for patients who have two copies of the F508del mutation, which is the most common CF mutation.) The results are re-markable! Since he began taking Orkambi, both Levi’s pulmonary function and BMI have improved significantly.

Even so, Orkambi is not a cure, and even more research is needed toward that goal, and to improve the lives of CF patients with less com-mon combinations of CF mutations.

Please join Levi’s Team once more by registering at http://fightcf.cff.org/goto/Levis_Team_2017.

If you register online and make a self-donation, I will match your donation up to $50. (Limited to the first 20 persons registered and mak-ing a self-donation.)

BONUS: Walkers raising $100 or more will earn an event T-shirt. Learn more about fundraising awards at http://fightcf.cff.org/site/PageServer?pagename=gs_prizes

You are welcome to extend the reach of this message by forwarding to your friends who you think may be interested in partici-pating in the event.

Sincerely,

Gordon, Levi’s Team Captain
