FORCED ENTERTAINMENT & TAREK ATOUI

The Last AdventuresPresented by Warwick Arts Centre in association with Fierce Festival

Wed 1 – Fri 3 Oct 7.30pm

In The Last Adventures Forced Entertainment collaborate with Lebanese sound artist Tarek Atoui to create a compelling performance on an epic scale. Sounds swarm and storm in the air as performers in homemade costumes create a pageant of giant sea monsters, ghosts, fighting kings, marching robots and dancing trees. Before our eyes Forced Entertainment transform a haunted forest into a sky of portentous clouds, or the aftermath of a terrible war. Here and there, recognisable characters surface from the chaos in strange juxtapositions, emerging onstage from the ruins of familiar stories, only to disappear in the very next moment.

Directed by Tim Etchells. With Robin Arthur, Mark Etchells, Leja Jurisic, Thomas Kasebacher, Richard Lowdon, Claire Marshall, Cathy Naden, Terry O’Connor, Teja Reba, Bruno Roubicek, John Rowley and Kylie Walters.

That Night Follows DayA rehearsed reading by Tim Etchells

Wed 29 Oct 7.30pm

That Night Follows Day is a comical and poignant text written for performers aged 8 to 14. The work explores the ways in which adults’ words and actions shape and influence young people’s experiences. Addressing the audience directly, a chorus of children explores and interrogates the range of advice, facts, truisms, white lies and excuses they hear from their elders.

Forced Entertainment and Warwick Arts Centre have created a rehearsed reading of the piece performed by 16 local children.

BECKIE DARLINGTON PRESENTS GATE THEATRE’S

Groundedby George Brant

Tue 7 – Fri 10 Oct 7.45pm

My pulse quickens. It is not a fair fight, but it quickens.

She’s a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot. She’s pregnant. Her career in the sky is over. Now, she sits in an air-conditioned trailer in Las Vegas flying remote-controlled drones over the Middle East. She struggles through surreal 12-hour shifts far from the battlefield, hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night.

A gripping, compulsive new play that flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workday existence, and targets our assumptions about war, family, and what it is to be a woman.

PAINES PLOUGH & THEATRE ROYAL PLYMOUTH

The Angry Brigadeby James Graham

Tue 14 – Fri 17 Oct 7.30pm

Its government has declared a vicious class war. A one-sided war... We have started to fight back... ...with bombs.

A bold new play by James Graham, writer of sellout shows This House (National Theatre) and Privacy (Donmar Warehouse).

Against a backdrop of Tory cuts, high unemployment and the deregulated economy of 1970s Britain, a young urban guerrilla group mobilises: The Angry Brigade.

Their targets: MPs. Embassies. Police. Pageant Queens.

A world of order shattered by anarchy; the rules have changed. An uprising has begun. No one is exempt.

As a special police squad hunt the home-grown terrorists whose identities shocked the nation, James Graham’s heart-stopping thriller lures us into a frenzied world that looks much like our own.

OUT OF JOINT, CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE & SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE

Pitcairnby Richard Bean

Tue 21 – Fri 24 Oct 7.30pm Wed matinee 2.30pm Fri 24 Oct 7.30pm is a Captioned Performance

A gripping island story from the writer of the international hit, One Man, Two Guvnors.

It’s 1789 and revolution is in the air. In France, a monarchy falls. And in the South Pacific, Fletcher Christian overthrows his captain in the famous mutiny on The Bounty.

With the ship’s crew and their Tahitian followers, Christian sails to the fertile and remote island of Pitcairn. But his dream of creating a new Eden of equals is blown off course by the greed and suspicion of his fellow sailors, and by the Tahitian’s adherence to hierarchy and traditions.

With salty humour and growing horror, Richard Bean charts the colony’s descent from new paradise to brutal dystopia.

Richard Bean’s plays include One Man, Two Guvnors and the new hit comedy about phone-hacking, Great Britain (both National Theatre and West End). He has twice won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, and Critics’ Circle awards in both London and New York. Other work includes The Heretic (Royal Court), The Big Fellah (Out of Joint), and the forthcoming West End musical Made in Dagenham.

GOB SQUAD

Are You With Us?Thu 30 Oct 7pm

Gob Squad Arts Collective has been making performance and theatre together for almost 20 years. They have shared highs and lows, fame and failures, and now it’s time to take stock and settle old scores!

Are You With Us? is an improvised performance where Gob Squad ask each other all the questions they are afraid to ask in private, in public. It’s part group therapy, part performance nightmare. By turns brutally funny and painfully honest, it’s a high stakes game on the verge of a breakdown.

This is a performance for anyone who has buried what they really want to say to their colleagues, family or team-mates. Anything can go wrong. Everything is at stake. So, are you with us?

Eastby Steven Berkoff

Wed 22 – Sat 25 Oct 7.45pm

We will not end our days in grey born blight - and stomp our hours away in fag end waste... But what’s the future lads for us?

East is angry, sexual, comic and provocative; a non-linear narrative of the inhabitants of 1970s East End. Through the course of the play, the characters relate stories of their lives, revealing their relationships with each other and, through self-examination, give an insight into their mindsets. All this is framed within an inescapable and unforgiving television set, and performed in Steven Berkoff’s energetic and iconic style of physical theatre.

SouvenirsWed 12 – Sat 15 Nov 7.45pm

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Souvenirs is a devised performance which questions how we negotiate worth in everyday life. Set in a world where sentimental value is everything, we see four stories spring forth from four ordinary objects: a piece of fabric, a newspaper, a wine bottle and a cardboard box. All trigger a memory as they transform to offer a glimpse into the history of an individual. Expressed through movement and new writing, Souvenirs teaches us to find beauty in waste and meaning in things which we would normally choose to disregard.

FAMILY

THEATRE HULLABALOO

Angelby Kevin Dyer

Sun 12 Oct 2pm

A story of unexpected friendship.

Angel is the story of Bill who returns an old woman’s shopping bag on an afternoon when she had nothing better to do and Bill finds her life is never the same again. The old woman, Miriam, lives between then and now. She keeps her watch in the fridge, plays guns with bananas and has an imaginary dog called Satan. She may be losing her marbles, but she definitely isn’t losing her sense of humour.

When Bill, who is a girl by the way, realises that Miriam needs help she decides to sort things out – and if that means not going home, telling lies and kidnapping a man in order to mend the past, then that is what she will have to do.

This brilliantly funny and heart-warming new play about childhood and ageing is a fantastic piece of new writing for audiences aged 10 years and above.

Shortlisted for The Writer’s Guild of Great Britain, Best Play for Young Audiences 2012 and The Brian Way Award 2013.

What’s really troubling the Thing – and will anyone ever get to sleep? Find out in this magical, musical show for everyone aged 3 and up.

SCAMP THEATRE & FIERY ANGEL

Private Peacefulby Michael Morpurgo

Sun 26 Oct 5pm

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War One, Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialed and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Adapted & directed by Simon Reade.

The Ice BookSat 29 Nov 1pm – 4.30pm (every half hour) Sun 30 Nov 12pm – 3.30pm (every half hour)

The Ice Book is the world’s first projection mapped pop-up book, a theatrical installation depicting a silent fable through a combination of paper pop-ups, projection mapping and music. By day, each of the 11 pages is no more than a few feet tall, featuring intricately hand-cut blank pop-ups, but when the lights go out and a projection is beamed onto the book’s pages, the paper comes to life as if by magic and a dark, atmospheric story unfolds about a man on a journey through the wilderness. The result is an intimate, 15 minute visual experience that’s greater than the sum of its parts, designed for an audience of no more than 12 people.

Image: Edouard Manet (1832–1883) The Execution of Maximilian about 1867–8 Oil on canvas, 193 x 284 cm The National Gallery, London © The National Gallery, London

The Execution of Maximilian depicts the fatal moment when the young Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, abandoned by the French colonial forces that had installed him there some three years earlier, was shot alongside two of his generals, Mejía and Miramón, on 19 June 1867. The left hand section of the canvas was lost during Manet’s lifetime. After his death it was cut into smaller fragments, some of which were sold off separately, eventually to be reassembled by Edgar Degas. The painting has been part of the National Gallery Collection since 1918.

This important painting - presented at the Mead Gallery as part of the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour - forms the centrepiece to a specially curated exhibition of works by some of today’s greatest artists from across the world. Together they speak of the way the past is represented to us, and of the personal stories at the heart of violent events which are either lost or - like the image of Maximilian’s hand clasping Miramón’s - can only be glimpsed.

The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour is sponsored by Christies.

Tchaikovsky Marche Slave Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5

Conductor Valery Poliansky Piano Peter Donohoe

If classical music is about anything, it’s about emotion – and no-one understood emotion like Tchaikovsky. “With desire and passion”, he wrote on the score of his Fifth Symphony, and this grand, sweeping romantic epic begins in despair, and ends in roof-raising celebration. No wonder it’s one of the most popular symphonies ever composed – and you haven’t really heard it at all until you’ve heard it played by a genuine Russian orchestra and conductor.

Valery Poliansky has been artistic director of the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra for over two decades; together, they’ll drive straight to the heart of Tchaikovsky’s inspiration. First, though, they tackle the Everest of Romantic piano concertos – Rachmaninov’s mighty Third Concerto.

Fans of the film Shine will remember it defeating David Helfgott: no fear of that tonight, as Poliansky and his team are joined by a real giant amongst British pianists, Peter Donohoe. This should be a first night to remember.

The HalléSat 8 Nov 7.30pm

Bax In Memoriam Sibelius Symphony No.5 Dvorák Symphony No.8

Conductor SIr Mark Elder

“I go all over the world to work with marvellous orchestras” says Sir Mark Elder, “yet still I miss the Hallé, what we have together. They know the way I work, they play so beautifully, they retain their curiosity… You can take musical risks.” After 14 years as music director of the Hallé, Elder and his Manchester orchestra are one of the great musical partnerships of our time.

Sibelius’s Fifth begins with a crisp Northern dawn and ends in a blaze of glory – and one of the simplest yet noblest melodies ever written. Dvorák’s gloriously tuneful Eighth, meanwhile, is just pure sunshine! The Hallé has been playing the music of Sibelius and Dvorák ever since it was written, but Elder begins with a personal speciality: a poignant lament by the neglected English romantic Arnold Bax. All of them will get the authentic Elder/Hallé treatment tonight: style, passion, and absolute commitment.

COULL QUARTET

Autumn SurpriseWed 15 Oct 7.15pm

Mozart Quartet in C K465 The Dissonance Tippett Quartet No.2 in F sharp Smetana Quartet No.1 in E minor From My Life

In chamber music, one note can unlock a world. For Bedrich Smetana, that one note was the sound of his own impending deafness, the final tragedy in a life of dizzying joys and desperate sorrows. Somehow, he put it all into one of the liveliest, loveliest and most heart-breaking string quartets ever written – practically an opera for four players.

Mozart sets up a wonderful surprise in the very first minute of his Dissonance quartet (the clue’s in the title) – and then the Coull share the joy of rediscovery in Michael Tippett’s vibrant wartime Second Quartet: music that manages to sing, dance and sigh at the same time!

Schubert Quartet in E flat D87 Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor Op.57 Schumann Piano Quintet in E flat Op.44

Genius loves company, and when you add a piano to a string quartet, it opens up a new dimension. Schubert’s delightful teenage string quartet raises the curtain, before the Coull Quartet are joined by pianist Richard Markham for Shostakovich’s big, bold, no-holds-barred Piano Quintet, written on the eve of the Second World War.

And then Robert Schumann tells a very different tale. Schumann was a man in love: his Piano Quintet is so ardent that it almost trips over itself! Love songs, whispered secrets, and pure, headlong happiness – it’s as enjoyable to play as it is to listen to, and Markham and the Coulls will live every note.

Handel Messiah

Conductor Christopher Monks Soprano Elin Manahan-Thomas Countertenor Michael Chance Tenor Nathan Vale Bass Andrew Davies

Forget the National Anthem. Forget Rule, Britannia! And even forget Jerusalem. Nearly three centuries on, one masterpiece reigns unchallenged as the ultimate musical national institution. There’s simply nothing more British than Handel’s Messiah. Every Valley Shall Be Exalted, The Trumpet Shall Sound, He Was Despised, For Unto Us a Child is Born, and of course Hallelujah! – everyone knows the tunes.

If you’ve never heard the Messiah complete, you’ve missed out on one of music’s most uplifting experiences. And if you have, there’s no better way to rediscover it than with this Christmas performance by Armonico Consort – the acclaimed Midlands-based ensemble that uses period instruments, internationally-renowned soloists and a superb professional choir to get as close as possible to the sound – and spirit – of Handel’s own time. Messiah has never sounded livelier, so go on, you deserve it: give yourself an early Christmas treat!

Nuestras VivenciasMon 1 Dec 7.45pm

Nuestras Vivencias is an exciting project founded by two established flamenco guitarists, Juan Casals Mendoza and David Shepherd. The guitar duo has become an essential part of flamenco and these two players bring all of its dynamic rhythms, beautiful melodies and evocative textures into their compositions. They are joined by cajon player Glenn Phillips.

Studio £8 (£6.50)

At the heart of it all – even three groundbreaking decades after Capercaillie first performed as teenagers in their native Scottish Highlands; even as they continue the worldwide musical journey that’s taken them from the Brazilian rainforest to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, not to mention into the pop charts – lies the ancient Gaelic culture that originally inspired them.

At The Heart Of It All, the band’s 30th anniversary album, revisits and reinvigorates that same treasure-trove of music once again, featuring songs sourced from the rich vein of centuries old Hebridean folksongs enriched by compelling

contemporary arrangements, together with an array of special guests representing the cream of today’s flourishing Scottish music scene.

This country-wide fruition represents a remarkable transformation of the cultural landscape where Capercaillie first emerged 30 years ago, a transformation in which they’re widely credited with a seminal role - not least by the myriad of younger Celtic musicians, including many of the new album’s guests, who cite them as trailblazing role-models.

EXPERIENCE MORE

Thank you for donating!Warwick Arts Centre has charitable status as part of the University of Warwick, and if you’ve booked recently you’ll have been asked for a donation to support our artistic

commissioning and the pioneering education work in the local community.

Here’s how you’ve helped recently:

Sculpture & Colour TrailsDonations this year have allowed us to offer our Sculpture Trail and Colour Trail FREE of charge. As part of our Take Part in Art project, over 500 Key Stage 1 children in Coventry Primary Schools, serving areas of low engagement in the arts, have been inspired by sculptures and paintings in the Trails and the University of Warwick Art Collection before making their own works of art, inspired by their experience, in their schools.

And, if you like what we’re doing, join us as a member or supporter. See page 3 and over the page for details.

Thank you for donating!

Le GustaMichael and the team offer you a warm welcome for a casual and relaxed dining experience at Warwick Arts Centre. You can choose from a tempting menu of Mediterranean influenced starters, classic dishes and pizzas baked in our stone oven, together with a fine selection of bottled beers and wine. Or why not treat yourself to a cocktail?

Café Bar Renowned for its selection of tempting cakes, relax in the Café Bar and enjoy a range of snacks, deli sandwiches, jacket potatoes, scrumptious soups, delicious coffee and ice blended frappés. Our staff are allergen-aware too, so if you have any special dietary needs, please ask.

Look out for our post show Theatre Suppers – pre-bookable at Box Office.

Become an ambassadorWarwick Arts Centre aims to provide the most distinctive, wide-ranging programme to the broadest possible audience. To do this we go to great lengths to understand our audiences so we can improve and tailor our offer so they have the best possible experience when they visit our website, book a ticket, or attend a show.

Our Ambassadors programme provides a platform for us to have meaningful conversations with people that are passionate about the Arts Centre. The information and insight they share with us informs how we grow and develop as an organisation.

We launched our Family Ambassador programme in June, our Access Ambassadors scheme in July, and we look forward to launching our Teachers’ Ambassadors scheme in October. To find out more or to become a Warwick Arts Centre Ambassador visit warwickartscentre.co.uk/about-us/ambassadors/
