At Wärtsilä we strive constantly to do what is best for you. This includes optimising the lifecycle
value of your installations by offering precisely what you need; a promise we can deliver on
since we provide the oil & gas industry with a broad portfolio of integrated solutions, products
and global services.
Whatever the location, no matter how harsh the conditions, we deliver world class
efficiency, fuel flexibility, and environmentally sound solutions – everyday. This is why today, we
are involved in bringing more than 6 percent of the world’s total oil production to the market.
volume by a factor of around 600, enabling
efficient transport to end-users overseas as well
as on land where pipelines are not a suitable
sustainable solution. Small scale liquefaction
plants are one of the important parts in the LNG
chain, making a growing LNG market possible.
Renewable fuels are attractive on the world
market due to environmental targets and also
the aim to reduce the dependency of fossil fuels.Biogas is regarded as one of the most important
sources to achieve these targets – to meet
this market Wärtsilä has developed solutions
especially designed for biogas liquefaction.
Natural gas has become one of the most
important energy sources in the world, and
the consumption worldwide is believed to
grow in the coming decades. It is now an
alternative fuel in marine applications, power
generation plants and most recently in
vehicles. The replacement of fossil fuels such
as HFO, MDO and diesel has a significant
positive contribution to the environment –almost eliminating emissions of NO

particulates and reducing CO2 emissions.

Wärtsilä is following the best-available-
technology (BAT) principle regardless of
capacity or refrigeration technology. This
ensures maximum operating ability, ease of
operation and low energy consumption for our
clients, irrespective of plant capacity.
Wärtsilä’s highly qualified engineers have
TECHNOLOGY PHILOSOPHY
LIQUEFACTIONPROCESS – MODULEBASED SOLUTION
Large variety of gas sources, both in gas
quality and quantity, require a variety of
liquefaction systems.
Wärtsilä’s solution to this is a module
based design, where every module is
optimized for the process it was intended for.
In this modern age of industrial competition,
a successful plant design should be able to
sustain the changing trends in demand and
still produce optimal economic gains.
The schematic diagram (right) shows
the different types of modules that could be
delivered in a liquefaction plant supplied by
Wärtsilä.
developed a product portfolio adapted to
the needs for mini, small and medium sized
LNG/LBG production plants. A modularized
approach is selected, where customers can
easily select a scope of supply from Wärtsilä
adjusted to their specific project need.

Wärtsilä have developed the energy
efficient Mixed Refrigerant (MR) liquefaction
technology for even lower capacities than our
usual small and mid-scale LNG plants. The
choice of technology in combination with ourfast track engineering model results in low
ADVANTAGES OF MIXED REFRIGERANT:
• Low power consumption – reducing OPEX.
• All components are conventional and
robust technology – reducing CAPEX.
• Designed for unmanned operation.
• Local control of LNG export. Truck driver
can load on his own.
• Robust main rotating machinery with high
efficiency – oil flooded screw compressor.
• Simple energy supply, only electric power
needed.• Easy start up and shut down of all
systems.
• Standard capacities: 10, 17 and 25 ton
LBG/day.
• Short delivery time.
• Easy shipment.
• Plug and play philosophy, skid based –
Relocation possible.
• Broad range of applications biogas,
pipeline gas, CBM and flare gas.
• Biogas liquefaction
• Biogas from household organic waste
in Oslo region
• Biogas to be used on city buses

investment costs and short manufacturing

The liquefier system uses a mixed
refrigerant technology, where one single MR
compressor and one aluminum plate-fin heatexchanger (PFX) are the main components
in the system. A standard glycol chiller
(pre-cooling unit) is incorporated to improve
energy efficiency and to ensure stable
operation of the MR process.

Wärtsilä’s larger liquefaction plants are
based on the reversed Brayton nitrogen
refrigeration cycle. Nitrogen is the sole
refrigeration medium, and used in a process
of compressing and expanding the nitrogen toobtain the required cryogenic temperature.
ADVANTAGES OF BRAYTON NITROGEN
REFRIGERATION CYCLE:
• Low power consumption – reducing OPEX
• Robust, reliable and simple to operate
technology.
• Capacity control is very easy and quick.
• Designed for unmanned operation.
• Easy start up and shut down of all systems.
• Local control of LNG export. Truck driver can
load on his own.
• Simple energy supply, only electric powerneeded.
• Refrigerant will be produced directly from
air on site – No logistics connected to the
refrigerant.
• There is no required handling of chemicals.
• Our design provides a ZERO FLARE solution.
During normal operations, hydro-carbon
losses will be zero.
Wärtsilä delivered its rst onshore LNG
production facility in early 2003, to Gasnor
in Snurrevarden, Norway.
For over ten years northern Europe’s
rst free-standing small-scale LNG
production facility has demonstrated the
potential of Wärtsilä onshore liquefaction
technology.
The Snurrevarden LNG productionplant is based on the Brayton nitrogen
cycle, which combines simplicity
and robustness, enabling unmanned
operation.
The Kollsnes plant went into operation in
2007 with a capacity of 84,000 tons per
year. Storage capacity is 4,000m3 and
the gas export facilities include two truck
lling stations and an existing loading jetty
for small LNG carriers.

These liquefaction plants are easy to operate,
reliable, fully automated and represent a low
life cycle cost solution in the small to medium
size liquefaction capacity range.
Small scale liquefaction plants open newmarket opportunities to develop local or
regional gas distribution networks, where
gases as an environmentally friendly and
competitive energy source did not previous
exist as an alternative.

Unlike many other solutions in the market,
Wärtsilä has developed liquefaction
technologies from the principles of scaling
up, rather than scaling down. Wärtsilä’s LNG
production plants are hence simple, easy to
operate, cost effective, robust and reliable.
Wärtilä is fully committed to develop
innovative solutions, often based on
requirements from clients. With the broad
in-house expertise, several successful
products have been developed. Before
launching the product to the market, Wärtsilä
will build demonstration plants for full testing
of the new and novel solutions, increasing
customer confidence.
