Mother’s Day
What a wonderful morning it was last Friday as we
celebrated Mother’s Day. It was fabulous to see
many of our mum’s and special people enjoy a
morning tea, allowing everyone to take some time
to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Earlier in
the week, students in Prep – Year 6 were once again
given the opportunity to purchase a gift to give to
their mum, grandmother or special person on
Mother’s Day. Well done and thankyou to the team
of parents and friends who willingly devoted their
time and energy for the benefit of our school
community.
Education Week- ‘Celebrating Careers’
Next week is Education Week and a time for us to
appreciate all those who contribute to a child's
development, learning and life. Educators are not
only teachers; every parent, grandparent, sibling
and community member contributes to the learning
of our children. The theme for 2019 is ‘Celebrating
Careers’. On Wednesday, students will participate in
National Simultaneous Storytime, Thursday is open
morning and on Friday, students are welcome to
participate in a Dress up day. Dressing as the job
they want to do in the future. Please come and help
us celebrate our wonderful school next Thursday
morning from 11:30am-1pm. Our students
absolutely love having visitors to their classrooms
and are very excited to share with you some of the
learning that goes on in the classrooms and
specialist rooms. From 1pm onwards, families are
welcome to join staff and students for a
complimentary BBQ lunch. Hope to see you all
there!
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for students in Year 3 and
5 are being conducted this week. For the writing
component, students had to write a narrative titled
‘The Gate’. Students were asked to consider who or
what is on the other side of the gate and what
happened when the characters were on the other
side. It was pleasing to see the students’ creativity
and the use of VCOP elements in their stories. The
Reports on each student’s achievements in these
tests will be provided to parents later in the year.
Staffing
I would like to welcome Fiona Ludeman to our
Warrnambool West staff. Fiona has been employed
as an educational support member and will be
working predominantly with the year 3-4 students
in Mrs Robert’s class. Welcome Fiona!
Walk To School Day – Friday 17th May
Walk to School Day will take place across local
schools next Friday. We would like to see as many
students participating in the walk! Remember ….
Half the way ….is OK!
School Zones Online
The Department has released a new website that
helps parents identify their local government school
online.
Mrs Clare Monk Principal
Findmyschool.vic.gov.au launched on 23rd April
shows every school zone across the state. The new
website highlights the choice of public schools
available to the Victorian community.
If your child is preparing to enter Year 7 and you
want to know more about the government
secondary school options in our area, or you know
someone who is interested in enrolling at our school,
visit findmyschool.vic.gov.au.
Schools have to accept enrolments from families
who live within their school zone, however
enrolments from outside a school zone depend on
vacancies at the school.
If you have a question about the website, contact
the Victorian School Building Authority Hotline on
1800 896 950 or email [email protected]. For
inquiries about enrolling at our school contact us on
55613161 or call into our office.
Year 7 Placement, 2020
Year 6-7 transition forms for 2020 were sent home
with students last week. A reminder to all families
that the application forms for year 7 placement are
due to be returned to the office by Friday 17th of
May.
School Council
Our next school council meeting is next Monday May
20th, during this meeting we will be updating our
uniform policy, our current uniform policy is
attached and if you have any recommendations for

Wellbeing Update
Ramadhan Iftar Celebration
Assalamu ‘alaikum to everyone.
Over the weekend the Warrnambool Islamic Society held their Iftar celebration for Ramadhan. Ramadhan is a special month of the
year for all Muslims throughout the world. It’s a time for contemplation, self-reflection, devotion and showing gratitude for all the
good things in life. During the holy month of Ramadhan Muslims fast from dawn to sunset as a reminder of the social responsibility
to look after people who are in need and to contribute to a better society.
There were people from many of the churches in Warrnambool and people from a variety of other organisations. We were lucky
enough to witness the call to prayer which is an amazing experience to see and hear. To break the fast dates were eaten before we
hooked into the delicious foods cooked by the wonderful members of the Muslim Society.
Thank you, Warrnambool Islamic Society for the magnificent experience and the generosity they showed in sharing their culture and
religion.
Thanks for reading this little section. I look forward to writing again soon.
Stay wonderful, West Warrnambool! - Toby

Positive Coping
This week, we have been focusing on Positive Coping strategies in Positive Ed. The students
have been learning about the impact of positive self-talk and negative self-talk on their
emotions. Below is some examples the senior classes produced during a brainstorming
session on Positive Self-talk.
It’s ok, try again!
We can go next time!
I tried my personal best!
Someone can help me?
There’s always next time!
We can go later!
Don’t worry, it’s ok!
Lisa Halliwell
On Thursday May 9, the students had another wonderful visit to Mahogany Kindergarten.
We baked cakes with the kinder kids and after they were cooked we got to eat it.
The visits have been a great opportunity for our students to make connections with children who
will hopefully be Warrnambool West Primary School students in the future.
Thankyou to Teacher Simone Bell who has worked with Mrs.Hopkins to organise such a great
learning experience.

Dental Screening: Information Handout
Dear Parent/Guardian,
South West Dental Service are offering free dental screenings at Warrnambool West Primary School. South West
Dental Service are passionate about promoting good oral health habits at any age and providing positive dental experiences for students. South West Dental Service is your local public dental clinic with a team of highly skilled dentists, oral health therapists, dental therapists and dental assistants. We have dental clinics in Warrnambool, Hamilton, Portland and Camperdown servicing the local community. What is a dental screening? A screening is used to identify obvious dental concerns that may need following up as a child’s teeth are important for them to eat, speak and smile. Screenings are performed by our friendly oral health therapists with the help of our dental assistants- screenings provide a positive dental experience for your child. Upon arrival at your child’s school, we examine their teeth, and with your consent apply a fluoride varnish to assist the strengthening of tooth surfaces against decay. What happens after the dental screening? Following the dental screening, all children receive a letter advising their parent/guardian if a follow up appointment at South West Dental Clinic is needed. Our friendly staff can assist your family in arranging a dental appointment. Please complete the attached consent form and return it to your school. If you have any concerns or require further information, please feel free to contact South West Dental Service on 5564 4250.
