Message from our C.A.O.January 2013

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! One year ago, Principal Batiste’s message to you spoke of the progress of our school under construction. She stated in January ’12 that our new building was about 1/3 complete. The analogy was made regarding the construction of our new home and the teaching of children. We were in the mist of a massive construction–beams, mortar, bricks–one piece at a time. Our edifice is now up and running, but the construction of our excellent school continues from within. We will always be a work in process. Education is a lifelong process, that begins with the home and continues with kids through elementary school and beyond. We truly believe that the road to college begins with us. We are in our

new home, but the challenge of building and enhancing the minds of our young charges are still upon us. Just as parenting is a never ending job, so is teaching! There is always something that needs to be done. The traditional day sometimes is not long enough to get everything completed. So, for the 6th year, we will host our Saturday Warrior Academy.

We have begun our seven weeks of small group instruction for students in grades 3-8, all in preparation for the LEAP/iLEAP testing in the spring. Past results have indicated that this practice provides us with the results we need for success. If your child received an invitation to take part in SWA, it is our strong recommendation that you bring them each of the designated Saturdays (see page 1 of this newsletter). The results will be worth the effort.

“Terri” Williams, C.A.O.

The instructional day begins promptly at 8:00 a.m., Monday - Friday. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. are tardy and must check into the office before heading to class.

Dismissal is at 3:15 p.m., Monday - Friday! (Parents of car riders are asked to arrive for pick-up 10 minutes before

dismissal).

Remember, the ExpandED Learning (the afterschool program) does not meet on Fridays.

Thank you parents for your cooperation!

School Supplies Sold DailyOur Student Council sells school supplies–paper, notebooks, pencils, erasers, etc.– every morning from 7:30 - 8:00 in the school’s gymnasium. Couldn’t make it to the shopping center, don’t worry. Mrs. McCray and the Warrior SC have all the supplies you need to be productive and prepared.

Cell Phones (and other electronic devices) are not allowed in the classroom during the instructional day.

Students needing cell phones for after school contact with parents should check them in with security in the morning. They are returned at the end of the school day by the security staff.

Great schools always have a great P.T.A.!

Your voice is needed!Join the P.T.A today

Only $5.00 per family . . . P.T.A. meets every 2nd Wednesday in the month

We Love Box TopsDon’t forget to clip them from products you purchase and send them to Fannie C. Williams School to be redeemed. Our goal is 3,000 Box Tops this year! Can we count on you?

Our campus is a drug, tobacco, or alcohol free zone. Use of these items while on school grounds can result in suspension or expulsion.

Park Your Car Here!Parents needing to visit the school anytime during the day should park on the Bullard side of the building, in the spaces with the signs like the one pictured here. Other spaces are for staff.

It’s okay to park your car in the spaces with the signs like this!

Delta Sigma Theta Presents FCWCS with Funds for new Jacqueline Dennison Reading Corner

The alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority made an impressive presentation of $956.39 to Principal/C.E.O. Kelly Batiste and librarian Karen LeBlanc on behalf of the students of Fannie C. Williams Charter School.

Soror Tracey Braden made the presention in honor of her “sister” Jacqueline Dennison on November 30, 2012. The donation will be used to establish a section of FCWCS’s library as the Jacqueline Thomas

Dennison Reading Corner. The donation should add an additional 100 books to FCWCS’s collection of 7500 volumes.

Dennison was a lifelong member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and had served a stint as Chapter President of the N. O. Alumnae. She worked for 36 years in Orleans Parish Schools as a teacher and principal before retiring in 2005. Mrs. Dennison passed away July 18, 2011. ###

From the Desk of Nurse Robichaux

FLU SEASON IS HERE!(It’s not too late to be vaccinated)

We’re in the mist of the flu season. This year it came early and has been more intense than last year’s mild flu season. If you are in good health, the flu will make you feel lousy for about a week and cause you to miss school or work. If you are older (65+), young, pregnant, or have medical problems, it can hit you much harder. The U.S. Center for Disease Control says that between 3,000 and 49,000 people die each year from the flu. The severity depends on the year.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated. Everyone 6 months or older should be vaccinated. Recent studies have indicated that vaccines do not work as well as we would like, but they do offer considerable protection. For children, the nasal spray vaccine is 83% protective, for adults (18-65) the flu shot averages 59% protection. Seniors (65+), the group at the greatest risk of severe infection, do not have the best record of prevention. But, still it is a good idea for the entire family–all generations–to get vaccinated.

There are several myths that often stop people from seeking the vaccine. No, the flu shot will not give you the flu because it does not contain a live virus. Even pregnant women should be vaccinated. And yes, even if you

were vaccinated last year, you need to get vaccinated again this year. Each year the vaccine protects you against diffrent strains of influenza.

In a few weeks, New Orleans will be filled with people from all over the world, here for Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl. Even if you have been successful in keeping the flu at bay, thousands more people visiting our community from all over the world will result in even a greater “opportunity” to get influenza.

But how do you distinguish between the flu or just a cold? People experiencing a cold will usually have a stuffy or runny nose. The symptons for the flu are considerably worse than the common cold. The flu usually comes on very suddenly and frequently include high fever, headache, fatigue, coughing, sore thorat, and body aches. Some individuals, especially children, experience diarrhea and vomiting. If your child is experiencing these symptons, please do not send them to school. You do not want them to infect the rest of the student body. Medical attention should be sought immediately if they experience any of the following problems:• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath• Purple or blue discoloration of the lips• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen• Sudden dizziness• Confusion• Severe or persistent vomiting• Seizures

• Flu-like symptons that improve but then return with fever or a cough.

Several schools in the Boston area have closed recently to avoid passing the virus among students and staff. So when taking care of a child or adult who has contacted the flu, it is important that certain precautions are taken to avoid catching and spreading it to other members of the family.• Set up a sick room to keep the

germs away from the rest of the household• Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers with the flu because it can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye’s Syndrome (make sure any over-the-counter drug you give does not contain acetylsalicylic acid– aspirin)• Keep your child at home and away from healthy siblings for at least 24 hours after his/her fever is gone (without the use of medication)• Make sure you wash your hands after taking care of the sick, this includes disposing of tissue• Make sure the ill person stays hydrated, drinking plenty of fluids– water, sports drinks and fruit juices• Check to make sure the ill person is going to the bathroom to urinate (pale or light yellow urine means they are receiving enough liquids; dark yellow means they are dehydrated, in need of more fluids)• Use a humidifier to make the person’s breathing easier and to help reduce congestion• Limit visitors to only the person taking care of the sick. The above information was culled from the websites flu.gov, livestrong.com and recent news stories. ###
