Welcome to the what’s on guide to Warrington’s parksApril to September �010The ranger service and park friends groups provide a diverse range of events and activities. Practical events and guided walks are a great way to exercise, improve fitness and help contribute to a healthy lifestyle, while family fun events help you discover more about Warrington’s wildlife and heritage. Whatever your age, ability or interest attending one of these events promises to be an enjoyable experience.

About the programmeAll events are free of charge unless otherwise stated. For details please see event text.

Weather wiseThe rangers will be at the event meeting point whatever the weather. If the weather is really bad a decision will be taken then.

Family eventsEveryone is welcome to attend these events.

All children under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult.

Volunteer community workdays These are practical projects to improve the parks

for people and wildlife. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential. You must be over 16 to attend.

Health walksThese short walks provide an introduction to

walking and are ideal if you haven’t been out and about for a while. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential.

Guided walksThese walks vary in length and character.

Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential.

Natural history walks These walks have a special interest nature theme.

Suitable clothing and footwear are essential.

Theatre and musical entertainmentWalton Hall Gardens only.

Dogs welcomeDogs are welcome on some guided walks but

must be kept on a short lead at all times. Please check with the ranger. Guide dogs are welcome on all walks.

Ranger serviceHelping you enjoy Warrington’s parks and countryside. The rangers work at designated sites within the borough to actively promote the town’s parks and green spaces.

Community partnerships The ranger service encourages communities to get involved.

Site management The ranger service oversee the day to day management and play a key role in the parks future development. The rangers also undertake all ground maintenance at Warrington’s two prestigious nature reserves, Rixton Clay Pits and Risley Moss.

Patrols Through regular patrols the rangers provide a presence promoting a sense of personal safety and confidence for park visitors.

Environmental education Working with schools and colleges the ranger service promotes parks as an educational resource so hundreds of children each year learn more about their local environment.

Events and activities The ranger service organises a programme of public events, guided walks, community days, health walks and children’s environmental events. Walks, talks and other activities are also available for community groups and organisations.

Nature conservation Working in partnership the rangers protect and improve the ecology of the parks to encourage biodiversity and promote sustainable development.

With good public transport links, car parking, level footpaths, seating and accessible entrances and exits. Leaflets for the main parks are available and include maps and facility information.

A disability need not be a barrier preventing you or members of your family from taking part in a ranger event or activity.

How to find the parkBy car: From Culcheth village centre turn left by the Cherry Tree Pub in to Wigshaw Lane, directly cross the mini roundabout and turn right by the park entrance signs and follow a short road to the car park and ranger cabin.

If you are not used to walking and you fancy an easy introduction to this healthy activity why not join us on this easy walk of about three miles along the old route of the Wigan to Glazebrook railway line.

Sunday 17 October 11.00am - 3.00pm WOOdS And WAtEr WAndErJoin us on this guided walk of seven miles through the countryside to the north and east of Culcheth. We shall cross the Glaze during our ramble stopping for a picnic on the way. Please bring a packed lunch and wear suitable clothing and footwear.

Catch glimpses as they flit and swoop for insects and hear their calls via bat detectors as we discover their nocturnal world on this night-time walk around the Dam. Events are organised in conjunction with therisley moss Action Group (rimAG) and start from the visitor Centre at risley moss.

One of the few remaining mosslands in Cheshire and in the UK, Risley Moss is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and a designated local nature reserve (LNR). The distinctive plants and animals of the mossland as well as the woodlands, meadows and ponds make this site special.

Explore Warrington’s footpath networkWalk for pleasure, relaxation and exercise without having to go far from home. Many of Warrington’s parks provide access to the rights of way network that surround the town and its villages. There are hundreds of different routes through fields, woodlands and by watersides totalling nearly 128 miles of footpaths.

Join one of the many ranger led guided walks or get out and about by yourself. Most paths are marked with yellow arrows to help you find your way without trespassing or getting lost. The Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 276 covering Bolton, Wigan and Warrington is the essential footpath map to help you plan and walk your route.

How to find the parkBy car: Follow Manchester Road (A57) out of Woolston, over both M6 roundabouts continuing for approximately 2 miles. The visitor centre is on the left about 400 metres past the transport café while the reserve car park entrance is a further 120 metres on the left.

Sunday 2 May 2.00pm - 5.30pm BirdWAtCh CirCulAr: SPrinGBirdwatching helps you to relax and walking is good for the heart. So why not mix the two on this seven mile circular route? We shall begin from the visitor centre at the claypits, then west through agricultural land, crossing the A57 for a stroll alongside the Mersey and back to the nature reserve. In this way we shall be cutting through three different habitats. The pace will be moderate with plenty of stops as the rangers point out the various species of bird we come across.Suitable clothing and footwear are essential.

Some plants are poisonous, various creatures use camouflage, and we all know that wasps can sting. Come along this evening and discover the many and varied ways there are of not getting eaten.

The ponds at the Claypits are full of varied and interesting creatures from scorpions to dragons, bugs, beetles, caddies-flies, snails…far too many to mention. Trays and nets are provided. We have a visitor centre where you can get cleaned up, and, though the rangers knowledge is not that of David Attenborough, it is free at least!

The rangers at Sankey Valley Park hold regular workdays each month. If you want to learn some new skills or meet new people come along and help with tasks such as fence repairs, path laying, wildlife surveying, pond and woodland management. Anyone over 16 years of age is welcome whether you’ve only got a few hours to spare or want to help on a more regular basis. trAnS PEnninE trAil 21St AnnivErSAry EvEntS2010 is the 21st anniversary of the inaugural walk and ride launching the idea of the trail as a coast to coast route for walkers, cyclists and where possible, horse riders. The main celebration is a baton relay, passing through all 26 local authorities from both east and west, converging on the partnership’s centre, Barnsley.

mon 14 to tues 15 June sees the baton relay pass through the Warrington section of the trail. From Sankey to Lymm, schools, community groups and other trail users are invited to join in to carry the baton to our boundary at the River Bollin. On Sunday 25 July, one of 10 anniversary rides organised by the British Horse Society. Explore the equestrian opportunities along the Warrington and Trafford sections of the trail.
