Hello and a big, big welcome to the launch edition of Warrington West Local – your fab, free, independent & local magazine!

We’ve been producing Widnes Local and Runcorn Local for almost 3 years, going to over 20,000 homes around Halton and as we’re constantly being asked when we’re going to reach new areas we’re really excited to launch not one, but TWO new magazines! This one, Warrington West, going to 10,000 homes around Great Sankey, Penketh, Westbrook & Callands & Warrington South Local is going to 10,000 homes around Stockton Heath, Walton, Daresbury, Appleton & Stretton! So in total, we now deliver directly (not left hanging about waiting to be picked up) through the letterboxes of over 40,000 homes and businesses – GUARANTEED.

So as you can see we come right through your letter box, we’re nice and glossy, we’ve got lots of interesting features, including recipes, puzzles, gardening and motoring articles, lots of community what’s on information and lots of local businesses and services! And we’ve got lots more planned for you over the coming months, including local writers and lots more what’s on info. Our community pages are completely free for local groups,

organisations and charities, so get emailing us and we’ll include it for you.

In this edition you’ll find a delicious recipe for Pheasant Breast on page 20. Definitely one to try. We’ve also got a super article about the worst motoring flops ever - some surprises in there! And for the gardeners amongst you Jonathan Wild advises us about some beautiful climbing roses. I’m not much of a gardener myself so I pick up loads from this regular feature.

What do you think of our fab front cover for our launch edition? If you’re a budding photographer, why not send us a local photo, and maybe we could use it?

If you’re a local business and want to reach potential customers from only £20(+vat) per month then why not give us a call for a no obligation chat – we don’t do any heavy sell, we don’t need to (and we’re not very good at it).

So hello again, and we just want to take this opportunity to wish you (maybe a bit early) a very Happy Christmas and a very Healthy and Properous New Year!

10 years ago Paul Milner and Barry Thorley decided to com-bine their collective 40 years ex-perience and set up NYK, based just off Halton Road in Runcorn.

As well as a superb display in the showroom, NYK Kitchens & Bedrooms has its own workshop and allows them to offer their cli-ents a bespoke service catering for individual needs – everything is same on site allowing you to customise your order to suit your room.

Whether you opt for a brand new kitchen or bedroom, or choose to revamp your existing with replacement doors and worktops you can be assured of a quality job by time-served fitters.

The stunning kitchens are available as supply only or fully

fitted and are all custom made at the workshop, using top quality materials. One popular choice is for breath taking granite work-tops – they really give kitchens the ‘wow factor’.

Bedroom furniture is another speciality that NYK offer –avail-able either fitted or free standing with a wide range of finishes and colours to choose from, allowing you to match your bedroom to your tastes. Made-to-measure mirror doors are extremely popular and with a choice of mirror or panel doors in either frosted or coloured glass, give a traditional or modern slant. These can be fitted with or without an interior, again allow-ing the customer design options to suit their needs and budgets. Interiors can be made allowing

shelves and rails to be located at just the right height and position to suit.

Everyone is welcome to browse around the showroom which is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm, where you’ll find a selection of bedrooms and kitchens. What always strikes me when I visit the showroom is the mountainous range of thank you cards and letters from their many happy customers. This is a real testament of the teams’ attention to detail and great after sales service. You really can understand why most of Paul and Barry’s work comes through recommendation.

Warm up for WinterThere’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible.

First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/

or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference.

If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient.

The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers:

traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile).

Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer…

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness...Throw down a deep pile rug to •add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot.

Swap sheer, pale, lightweight •curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair.

On sofas and armchairs, pile •up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece.

Replace pale bed linen with •sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets.

Feature walls may no longer be •cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it.

When Cheryl Harris took over Top Turnout in April 2007 she had no idea that her “ideal hobby job” would grow and expand into the company it has become in only four years.

The company provides an Equestrian Laundry Service to horse and has seen a rapid expansion from its humble beginnings in a converted stable unit.

Cheryl has built up the business through hard work and attention to detail and is now proud to be able to move into bigger and better premises at Lady Heyes Craft Centre, from where she will be able to continue to provide horse rug laundry and repair services.

Top Turnout’s little silver van has become a familiar sight as it travels each day around the local roads, providing a FREE collection and delivery service.

All items are washed and re-proofed in modern computer controlled laundry machines using industry standard cleaning and proofing products following manufacturers’ recommendations and are air dried before being repaired, if necessary, to a very high standard using sophisticated modern sewing machines. Cheryl prides herself on her ability to rise to the challenge of repairing trashed and unsightly rugs and will always do her best to get valuable rugs back in action as soon as possible.

Horse rugs and riding equipment represent a huge financial outlay for horse owners and regular investment in maintenance and repair not only extends the life of the equipment but also helps to maintain standards of hygiene for horse and rider alike.

Get your emails organisedThe amount of online communications made by email continues to increase despite the impact of social media like Facebook and Twitter. Certainly, for business purposes email is an essential tool. Frequently, it’s the only way some people can be contacted, especially out of normal business hours. Emails can be legally binding in contract disputes and are certainly very helpful in resolving disagreements between customers and suppliers. But if you don’t keep your inbox in order, your emails can become a nightmare of missed communications, a tidal wave of spam and never being able to find the message that you’re looking for.

The first thing to consider is what email server to use. Online accounts with Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and the rest are easy to set up, usually free and you can access them from any computer anywhere. However, they have several limitations; you cannot send large files from them, they are prone to spam and it is easy to fill up the inbox. Also, having a Hotmail email address does not work wonders for the credibility of your business. It is better if possible to have your own domain and use it as an email portal, for instance

[email protected]. Whoever manages your domain will then provide as many email addresses as you require together with passwords and usernames. This lets you use software such as Windows Mail, Outlook, Mac OS X Mail or Linux Evolution to manage your mail, depending on your operating system.

Next you need to protect yourself against spam which can be a huge problem. An unprotected email account which has been in existence for a while can attract 100 spam messages a day, many of which may contain viruses. Outlook has built in Spam protection but you can download plenty of other software that does a very good job for a few pounds a year; it is daft not to.

Recently, one of my clients complained that he couldn’t receive email any more. I couldn’t find any problems with his account so I looked at his inbox and found over 1200 emails sitting in there, which was creating the problem. Most of them were spam, or marketing emails, or newsletters that would never be read; many of them were unopened. This is not an uncommon situation and solving it has nothing to do with IT; it is simply a matter

of good organisation. Create some appropriately named subfolders in your inbox, for example Misc, Enquiries, Clients and so on. Whenever you go to your inbox delete anything that is of no interest. Whatever is left should be dealt with as soon as possible and then archived in the appropriate subfolder. Make sure that you regularly empty your spam and deleted mail folders and, at the end of the day, your inbox should contain no more than 20 emails and all of these should be messages that have yet to be dealt with.

Should your computer be infected with a serious virus, the operating system may have to be re-installed and it will be very difficult to recover any emails from your mail client. For this reason it is important to backup whatever software you use on a regular basis. Online accounts are automatically backed up so you don’t need to worry about them, as are email accounts that run through a remote server. However, if you’re using an Email Client such as Outlook Express on your computer you will need to backup your data to an external drive on a regular basis. For instructions on how to do this go to Google and search on “backup Outlook Express” or whatever mail client you happen to be using. The process is really more straightforward than you might expect but, if you find it all too complicated, why not secure the services of your friendly neighbourhood IT consultant.

Specs2U opened their Widnes branch in March 2009 has been going strong ever since. Due to the tremendous success of this branch, the team at Specs2U are extremely proud to announce the opening Specs2U Warrington!

ABOUT THE BUSINESSWith a combined experience of 61 years in the optical industry, the three directors of Specs2U (Mark, Tim and Ian) started out as a lens manufacturer and had two high street shops. After sell-ing the high street stores, they realised there was a real gap in the market for selling direct from the factory to the public. They now sell a large range of spec-tacles from basic to designer brands much cheaper than the high street opticians because they bypass the retailers and sell direct from the factory to the consumer.

WHAT DO THEY OFFER?If you have specialised lenses then do not worry: Specs2U have a huge range of lenses available since they have accounts with all the major lens suppliers such as Essilor, BBGR, Nikon, Kodak and Hoya etc. They also import lenses from around the world! Their manufacturing side of the business also specialises in

complex prescriptions for other opticians so really there isn’t any lens that we can’t get! (That’s not a challenge!)

You might be thinking that all of this great service would come with a hefty price tag, well you couldn’t be more wrong. With spectacles starting from just £20 (compare that to the average high street price of £60!), free parking and fantastic product and technical knowledge, there really is a great deal of value being offered at Specs2U.

If it’s not quite time for a new set of specs, then they offer repairs to anyone from nose pads and screws to soldering.

WHY NOT VISIT THEM?From the Comprehensive eye examinations by an experienced optometrist (both Private and NHS tests are available) through to designer frames and special-ized lenses, Specs2U offer it all! Why not go down to visit their new branch at 2 Clarendon Court, Winwick Quay, Warrington, WA2 8QP? There’ll be no gim-micks and no hard sell, just comfortable, relaxed advice and information – bring your friends and family too, they’ll be more than welcome.

PRAISEThe company also boasts that they get the vast majority of new customers by recommendation and with testimonials from happy customers like these, it’s easy to understand why:

“I have for year’s worn very thick lenses but the boys worked miracles and the new lenses were 50% thinner!” Bryan Bennet

“In the shop window of my previous opticians was the same frame for double what I had paid!” Marissa Hankinson

“The service at specs2U was second to none, all the staff were pleasant and friendly and my eye test was carried out on time” Ashley Electrical Installations

“The glasses are excellent, I can now type little letters on my com-puter at night and better still, very inexpensive” Tony McKenna

Audi A6It has always been a mystery to me why so many people lavish attention on the Audi A4, which I’ve never considered to be a particularly good car, while ignoring the A6, which is an excellent car. Anyway, perhaps the arrival of the latest version of the A6 might do something to reset the balance. That aside, it must also take on some stiff competition in the executive saloon sector from the BMW 5 series, the Mercedes E Class and, to a lesser extent, the newly facelifted Jaguar XF.

All its competitors excel in different things and, to its credit, the A6 is attempting to take them all on at the same time. The E Class sets the standard in technology, roominess and build quality; well, it used to. The array of kit available on the A6 is mind boggling. This is a car that you can drive along the motorway with your hands off the wheel and your feet off the pedals in perfect safety, thanks to lane assist and radar cruise control. While it is a few inches shorter than its predecessor, it has a longer wheelbase and the result is enough room to throw a party in both the front and the back – the boot is cavernous too.

The Jaguar is striking in appearance, particularly after the facelift, and has a lovely cabin. The new A6 looks like a scaled down version of the A8 luxury saloon; it is all sleek planes and curved roofline and the neat tail lights, trademark grill and LED running lights finish it off perfectly. This really is a very handsome car. Step inside and the Jaguar is decidedly outclassed. The sweeping dash is as classy as can be, the seats are supremely comfortable and the layout of the controls is an exercise in ergonomic perfection. The quality of materials, fit and finish is almost up there with Rolls Royce, better than any of its rivals. The amount of kit fitted as standard, even on the base SE model, is impressive too, with leather seats, dual zone climate control, satnav and variable suspension settings all thrown in with the list price.

Then there is the BMW to consider, the ultimate driving machine. Audi has both barrels of the shotgun to fire back at the boys from Munich. The body is made from aluminium and high tech steel which means it is lighter and stronger, in turn making it faster, more economical and more responsive to drive. Audi has also made its already

excellent engines even better. Interestingly, while there are three diesels available, there is only one petrol, a turbocharged 296bhp V6 which is fast but anything other than frugal. I tried the two litre 4 pot diesel which has been tweaked to produce 175bhp. This is an excellent engine, propelling this big car up to 62 in a very reasonable 8.7 seconds while still delivering a commendable 57mpg. It is also extremely refined. The ride, so long an Audi weak point, is remarkably good too, soaking up pretty much everything you throw at it, though the S Line sports pack is best avoided if you like your comfort. The handling is the one area where this car disappoints; the steering is lifeless and weights up randomly while the cornering, though safe and predictable, provides a pretty joyless experience.

The A6 is an excellent all-rounder, stylish and well built, spacious and well equipped, fast and yet frugal. Is it better than the 5 Series? I’m afraid not; the BMW does everything the Audi does but is also a hoot on a twisty back road. Somehow, though, I don’t think most buyers will agree with me and the A6 will sell like a hot cake.

The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace was set up in memory of Tim and Johnathan two years after the IRA bombing of Warrington in 1993. On the 7th Anniversary, 20th March 2000, the Peace Centre was opened by our Chief Patron the Duchess of Kent.

The aim of the charity was to work with young people from Ireland and Warrington to help them to foster lasting friendships, respect the views of others and to resolve conflict non-violently and, although this is still a big part of the Foundations work, the range and aspirations of our programmes has grown.

The Foundation works with people who have been involved in conflict locally, nationally

and internationally. Victims and survivors of terrorist attacks such as London, the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’, Sharmel Sheikh and Madrid bombings, ex-service men and women traumatised by what they have witnessed while serving overseas in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan, Army Officers who inform families when they have lost a loved one and Police working within our communities.

The Foundation helps those who are there to look after us, we provide the space for them to come together to gain support from one another and the skills to overcome their trauma and to use their experiences in a positive way for the benefit of the wider community.

Looking for the perfect way to get into the party mood this Christmas? Then why not join us? £35 per person includes 4 Course meal, fabulous live entertainment and a first class DJ playing all your favorite songs. Gifts donated by L’Oreal for all the ladies and you can bring your drinks too! Please ring 01925 581234 for more information.
