Letter of Reference for Faith Warren
Roderick W. Gallegos, Assistant Chief of Fisheries:
This letter is in support of Faith Warren, applicant for the position of Fish Hatchery Manager. Faith has worked as a student employee in my office for the past two years and I have always found her to be dependable, reliable and conscientious as an employee. Her job is to manage and direct student usage of our Learning Center so this position requires that she meets and greets students who come into the Center. She is always gracious, friendly and welcoming.
Faith is attentive to the demands of her position and manages the 27 plus tutors and the over 300 students daily that visit our resource. Faith assists students with registration and identifying the services they are seeking. She then makes sure that student needs are met and tutors are accessed. Faith is the first contact in our area so it is imperative that those that come into our resource are greeted in a friendly and professional manner and receive quality service.
The position she has applied for is exactly what Faith has gone to college to learn to do and she has such passion and enthusiasm for this type of career. I know that being in a rather isolated area would fit with her lifestyle and she would be an asset to your program as she has been to ours. I feel confident that if you hire Faith as your Fish Hatchery Manager you will find her not only knowledgeable but dedicated and capable of performing with expertise. I would recommend Faith Warren for this position with New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
Respectfully,
Stacy J. Elliott, M.Ed., LPCSenior Counselor and Learning SpecialistSupport Operations for Academic RetentionTexas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas

Re: Fish Hatchery Manager
Dear Mr. Gallegos:
I am very excited to be applying for your opening for fish hatchery manager, I hope once you review my qualifications and experience, to be invited for an interview. My background is quite eclectic with previous jobs and experiences. I started out in Pharmaceuticals, working within retail and then moving onto to pharmaceutical insurance where I reviewed medication requests from patients and doctors. I aptly handled customer and physician phone calls while working with various pharmaceutical software programs.
I then relocated to Lubbock Texas to finish my education at Texas Tech University. I will graduate in May of 2015 with a degree in Interdisciplinary studies; with concentrations of fisheries biology, wildlife biology, and conservation science. I have numerous classes that focus on fisheries management, ichthyology, and freshwater bio assessment. During my college career I have had several customer service positions, such as bakery clerk in a grocery store, management of volunteers and sales at football games, and student assistant positions, which is where I am currently working.
I also have various volunteer works at Texas Tech University. I have assisted graduate students with reptilian DNA research, gopher catching, and salamander trapping. These volunteer hours I have done have helped me better understand research methods and the hard work it takes to be a graduate student.
I can provide this position with the hard work it takes to successfully run a fish hatchery. I know that I have the knowledge and enough experiences to handle any problems that could arise. I am very punctual, ambitious, and hardworking, among all of my other able qualities.
I am confident that I will be a very valuable employee. Feel free to call me 806-787-4323 to arrange an interview. Thank you for your time and I look forward to learning more about this opportunity. Sincerely,Faith Warren
Career Goals
Long Term Objective
I have adopted my new saying of, “A happy and healthy fish is a tasty fish;” and I
will strive to leave my mark on the fish hatchery industry because I feel that is where I
will find my very specific and particular niche is. I have enjoyed fish and fishing all my
life that I really wonder why this came to a surprise to me that I wanted to have a career
in fish, and most particularly fish hatcheries. Fisheries is so important in the world we
live in today, that I really do not think that many people realize just how important they
are, and this is the reason why I want to pursue this long term goal. If I can, I want to help
maintain, manage, and supervise fish hatcheries in the Northwest at a statewide level. If I
can go higher than that, it would be a dream come true, but I have a feeling that after
more than a few hatcheries, I will have my hands full.
My first and foremost step is receiving my degree here at Texas Tech University
with the necessary classes and skills to start at a lower level. Ichthyology, fisheries
management and agricultural leadership were pivotal classes for me because they
strengthened and enhanced my leadership qualities which enable me to excel in my
chosen career field. After I receive my degree, I will then go onto finding a fisheries
technician job, this is where they do more of the labor intensive jobs, such as, measuring,
tagging, extracting (DNA, eggs, etc…), harvesting, and stocking; with how successful I
typically am with interviews and field work, I am extremely hopeful that I can land an
assistant hatchery supervisor position right out of college. This will definitely help me get
my foot in the door with the hatchery industry and introduce me to more responsibility
that I feel that I am ready for.
Short Term Objectives
My first and most important short term objective is, as mentioned earlier,
receiving my degree from Texas Tech University. A degree in any other field will not
suffice unless the classes come from a college such as Natural Resource Management,
Biology, and/or Agriculture; therefore, my concentrations include Fisheries Biology,
Wildlife Biology, and Conservation Science. Receiving my bachelor’s degree is a short
term objective, but such a monumental step towards my long term goal, without a degree
from higher education, it would take a lot more precious time to get where I would like to
be. With a college degree, I can surpass seasonal/summer work and move straight to
permanent/professional work in order to gain the essential experience I need in order to
proceed to my long term goal.
My second short term objective is to pursue more learning outside of class; this
literally means to read more books not required for school about fisheries, learn how to
tie more knots, perfect my angling techniques, learn more about boating and kayaking,
and also to keep myself familiar with fish anatomy, species, families, and properties
about the desired species I want to pursue (Salmonids and trout). Keeping up with this
information is essential for remembering information that I need and will also keep my
brain asking questions about what I do and do not understand. Just like any other field or
discipline, it is crucial to keep fresh ideas flowing, to ask scientific questions, and stay
open minded for present and future discussions within fisheries.
My last short term objective is to adapt to a much different environment than
West Texas. Realistically, I would like to achieve this goal by working and living in
Alaska, Washington State, or Oregon for at least a year. The pacific North West is where
I will find numerous jobs within my chosen field, working with the species of fish that I
want to work with, and personally, find important to our economy and diet.
Connections
Within interdisciplinary studies, my three concentrations for study are Fisheries
Biology, Wildlife Biology, and Conservation Science. The most important being
Fisheries biology; this field of concentration provides me with the best classes and
information to prepare me for the type of future that I have been working towards. The
fisheries classes also typically stay small and very personable; for example, fisheries
management is my third or fourth fisheries class, and every single person I share the
classroom with I have had for the last three semesters in my other fisheries classes. We
all know each other and respect each other as potential fisheries professionals, as well as
the fisheries professor. She is one of the best resources to go to in order to ask questions
and start discussions about our field. This is the best discipline I could have chosen to
pursue in order to achieve my long term goal.
My second concentration is Wildlife Biology which includes broader subject
matter. This encompasses plants, mammals, invertebrates, fish, and other forms of
wildlife. Having this discipline part of my repertoire is also essential to my long term
career. Understanding how plants and animals fit particular niches, and that share
environments with a body of water or fish species will also further my knowledge and
complement my fisheries profession. Having classes through this discipline will also
make me more marketable to different companies and or higher echelon positions
because of the flexibility.
My last concentration is Conservation Science; this discipline teaches principles
of ecology, conservation management, and discusses different conservational issues.
Most fish hatcheries and programs are stocking and conservational programs; which
mean they harvest, raise, and stock fish to keep wild numbers up. This has huge
economic value to the waters they are released in and to the areas that they are released
in, such as recreational uses. Learning and understanding such values through
conservation will help my future long term goals to produce fish to sustain dietary needs,
recreational uses, and to help preserve and protect threatened and endangered species. All
of my disciplines can connect and complement each other very well in order for me to
because a knowledgeable and professional fisheries person. This class has been extremely
helpful in identifying my strengths and weaknesses and was particularly useful during the
mock interview process. I had no idea that we had services such as the career center and
it has helped me produce a better resume and interpersonal skills to adopt for real
interviews. I also enjoyed the networking and etiquette part of the class; I now have broad
connections with other on LinkedIn, and am continuing to learn how to use it.
