Chevrolet is providing 12 ex- tended-range electric Volts to help expand a unique program that matches local entrepreneurs and MBA students committed to revitalizing small businesses across America. MBAs Across America launched last year when four first-year Harvard MBA students drove 8,000 miles across the country, offering free business counseling to local entrepre- neurs. With the success of their journey, two of the original team members expanded the program into a nonprofit organization. Eight MBA teams from Babson, Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, University of California Berkeley, and University of Michigan will visit 25 cities, including Detroit, this summer helping nearly 50 small businesses. “Detroit is the spiritual birth- place of MBAs Across America, so it is fitting that our movement enters its second year thanks to the visionary support of GM — an iconic American institution that we fundamentally believe will help lead the resurgence of Detroit in the years to come,” said Casey Gerald, founder and chief executive of MBAs Across America. “We are inspired by GM’s work in the Motor City, and thank them for their support in power- ing our teams’ journeys in Chevy Volts.” The MBA students will help seven Detroit metro area busi- nesses: Detroit Empowerment Plan, Ellis Island Tea, EliTea, Oak- land Living, the Social Club Grooming Company, Social Sushi, and Sweet Potato Sensations. Sebastian Jackson, founder of the Social Club Grooming Com- pany in Detroit, was among the first entrepreneurs the MBA stu- dents worked with in 2013. Since working with MBAs Across America, Jackson has tripled the revenue of his hair sa- lon and recently received a $100,000 no-equity investment from a local investor. Among the people who attend- ed the event were Detroit busi- ness owner Elias Majid of Eli Tea and MBA Across America team members Sam Wollner and Annie Koo, who had the chance to speak with General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “We wanted to help enable the vision of MBA students, entrepre- neurs, and catalysts coming to- gether to make America stronger, one community at a time,” said Barra. “We’re delighted to be a partner in this extraordinary pro- gram and we could not be more proud that Detroit is at the heart of it.” The Volt will expose the MBAs to the quiet and efficient EV driv- ing experience and can go more than 300 additional miles be- tween charges by seamlessly switching to a gasoline-powered generator that provides electrici- ty to turn the wheels. Just ask Gary Oakie, owner of The Vette Shop on Kelly in Clin- ton Township. Oakie got his start fixing cars before he was a teenager. He eventually got a job at one of the two original The Vette Shop out- lets back in the 1980s. “I got to know Jon Sheppard (the owner),” Oakie said. “I got my first job at a repair shop when I was 12 and learned on the job. I started working for Jon back in 1984 and worked for him for four years.” By the time Oakie was 23, he decided to branch off on his own and open his own repair shop. “I was studying to be an engi- neer at Lawrence Tech and work- ing at Jon’s Vette Shop in Rose- ville,” Oakie said. “I had gotten that job after a mutual friend of ours said I was a good car painter.” Oakie painted that friend’s car at Sheppard’s shop and when Sheppard saw the quality of his work, he hired Oakie. “I didn’t want to compete with Jon after he had been so nice to me, so I opened up a regular col- lision shop in Roseville,” Oakie said. That business became known as The Body Shop Inc., which eventually moved to Clinton Township. Oakie said Sheppard sold the last The Vette Shop to investors a few years after he stopped work- ing there. They kept the place running for a couple of years, but it eventually closed down. “The name, The Vette Shop, was only registered with the state of Michigan,” Oakie said. “It wasn’t copyrighted or anything. So after it closed, the name be- came available and I snapped it up.” Oakie didn’t start up shop right away. He sat on the name until one of his employees, Paul Wozny, suggested that there was a niche that could be filled by The Vette Shop. Ford has made a big leap for- ward with the use of aluminum panels on the 2015 F-150 truck, said Ronald Krupitzer, vice presi- dent of the automotive market for the Steel Market Develop- ment Institute (SMDI). But, he added, steelmakers have kept up with demand by making lighter and stronger versions of steel. “It seems like all my time is spent going to conferences talk- ing about new materials in cars and the effect of these materials on repair,” Krupitzer said. “What we want to make clear is that steel is not a ‘stationary’ tar- get. Steel evolves to meet the needs of our automotive cus- tomers.” For example, Krupitzer said, in the 1970s, automakers were very concerned about corrosion, so steelmakers started making gal- vanized steel that could be put in cars to fight rust. In the 1980s, automakers be- came concerned about vehicle safety, so steelmakers developed high-strength steels that made cars tougher. It was like coming home forTeam Chevrolet NASCAR driverAustin Dillon when he touredGM’s Orion Assembly Plant onJuly 31.

“Austin was in the area of theOrion plant on other business,which included promoting thestate through the ‘Pure Michigan’campaign,” said plant spokesper-son Chris Bonelli. “His teamreached out to us and asked us ifit were possible for Austin to ac-tually take a tour of one of our as-sembly plants. It seems that eventhough Dillon is a NASCAR driverand being on Team Chevrolet, he

had never seen a car being madein a factory.”

Dillon’s team didn’t have to asktwice, Bonelli said. Despite theshort notice of Dillon’s request,Chevrolet was happy to arrangea tour of the Orion AssemblyPlant for July 31.

“We picked that particularplant because it was most con-venient for Dillon,” Bonelli said.“It was closest to where he wasdoing his other business.”

“I’ve been around racing nearlymy entire life,” Dillon said, “butthis was the first time I’ve actual-ly seen a car get assembled.

“I have a newfound respect forthe work that people do tomake a safe and high-quality car.”

Dillon and his staff toured theOrion facility from the body shopall the way to the final quality

and care line.He even rode in a finished

vehicle as it went throughthe rigorous quality inspectionprocedure, Bonelli said.

“As an avid NASCAR fan, it wasa pleasure hosting Austin and histeam,” said Steve Brock, OrionAssembly plant manager. “I cantell he really enjoyed seeing thisside of the business from the ex-cellent questions he asked dur-ing the tour.”

After his tour, Dillon addressedplant employees at a stand-up

rally. He fielded questions fromthe audience and met with manyNASCAR enthusiasts.

“We had a good few of our em-ployees who are NASCAR fans,”Bonelli said. “They took advan-tage of the opportunity to speakwith Dillon. They were excited tobe able to talk with a realNASCAR and Team Chevroletdriver at the factory where theywork.”

The plant visit concluded withan employee drawing to winitems autographed by Dillon.

A fund set up by General Motorsto pay for deaths and injuriescaused by its vehicles with faultyignitions is accepting claims.

The five-month filing periodthat began Aug. 1 is part of thefallout from General Motors’ re-call of 2.6 million small cars thatbegan in February.

That recall forced General Mo-tors Corp. to acknowledge it knewabout the defective switches formore than a decade and triggereda sweeping safety review that hasresulted in a series of additional re-calls. About 29 GM vehicles havebeen recalled this year.

Drivers, passengers andpedestrians killed or hurt by oneof the defective GM vehicles canfile a claim through Dec. 31.

GM has already absorbed a$400 million charge to cover thepotential payments to be madeby the fund.

The bills could run even high-er because the fund has no cap.The Detroit-based company ad-vised investors last month that itmight have to set aside an addi-tional $200 million to compen-sate the victims of its blunders.

About 40 claims had been filedby late evening of Aug. 1, saidCamille Biros, a spokeswomanfor the fund’s administrator, Ken-neth Feinberg.

GM has traced 13 deaths tothe defective switches, but somemembers of Congress investigat-ing the problems peg the deathtoll at nearly 100 people.

The defective vehicles cov-ered by the fund cover a range ofGM vehicles, including theChevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion.The ignition switches in thosecars could suddenly slip from“run” to “accessory,” causing en-gines to stall. That causes thepower steering to shut off, mak-ing cars harder to control anddisabling air bags in crashes.

Claims Now BeingAccepted in FaultyIgnition Cases

DETROIT (AP) – Suzuki is re-calling nearly 26,000 midsizecars in the U.S. because the day-time running light modules canoverheat and could cause a fire.

The recall covers the Veronafrom the 2004-06 model years.It’s an expansion of an earlier re-call of the Forenza and Reno.

All the cars were made by Gen-eral Motors in Korea. Suzuki saysin documents filed July 29 withgovernment safety regulatorsthat a transistor in the modulescan overheat in the instrumentpanel. That could melt the mod-ule, which could cause a fire.Suzuki says there were no firesreported in Verona models.

Dealers will replace the modulesfor free. Owners will be notifiedlater. American Suzuki MotorCorp. filed for Chapter 11 bank-ruptcy protection in November of2012 and stopped selling auto-mobiles in the U.S.

Suzuki RecallsCars with PossibleFire Problems

Chrysler will recall an estimat-ed 29,500 cars to replace theirknee airbags.

The action follows routinetesting that suggests the supple-mental restraint – designed toprotect a driver’s knees – maynot deploy in the proper posi-tion if the driver is not wearing aseatbelt. Chrysler Group recom-mends that all vehicle occupantswear seatbelts.

The company is unaware of anyrelated injuries, said Chryslerspokesperson Eric Mayne. Therecall involves an estimated 25,500model-year 2014 and 2015 Fiat500L models in the U.S., and 4,000in Canada. Affected owners will beadvised when they may scheduleservice, which will be performedat no cost to them. In the interim,owners are advised to wear theirseatbelts. Owners also may callChrysler’s Customer InformationCenter at 1-800-853-1403.

son Pam Flores begins aroundnoon with a caravan of cars go-ing from the GM Tech Center inWarren to the corner of 13 Mileand Woodward.There, Flores said, the Design

Center employees set up the “De-sign on Woodward” display.“The cars you see will range

from classics of the 1950s and1960s to modern Stingrays,” Flo-res said. “A lot of our designersbuy the cars they’ve helped de-sign, so you’ll see some newStingrays. But you’ll also seesome classic cars that our de-signers have purchased and re-stored. They really get themlooking good.”Flores called “Design on Wood-

ward” a fun event for peoplelooking to do something beforethe Woodward Dream Cruise offi-cially starts.The parking lot at 13 and

Woodward where the event isheld is owned by Beaumont Hos-pital.“They let some group use the

signed by Paul Arnone, seniorcreative designer, and the“Woodward” logo was designedby Adam Scenna, creative design-er, Brand Identity.“Paul’s in charge of the shirt

and he just asked me if I wantedto design the logo for the CR-7Corvette shirt,” Gonzalez said.“They like to feature GM’s‘hottest’ car on the vehicle shirtand this year it’s the CR-7, sothey came to me. I was happy todo it.”The shirts cost $12 a piece and

are sold only to GM Design Cen-ter employees.“We only print as many shirts

as there are orders,” Flores said.“We don’t want a situationwhere, say, 100 shirts are printedand we only sell 50. ‘Design on

Woodward’ is an event put on bythe employees of the Design Cen-ter. It’s not sponsored by thecompany.”Unfortunately for Gonzalez, he

didn’t keep his eye on the order-ing deadline and failed to placean order one of the shirts in timeto get one.“I wasn’t paying attention,”

Gonzalez said. “So I missed theorder deadline and didn’t evenorder a shirt with my logo. I’m

sure they’ll have an extra one.”Gonzalez said he’s looking for-

Your eyes won’t be deceivingyou if you’re driving along VanDyke and see a giant motorcycle.

Sitting in front of Detroit Mo-torcycles on Van Dyke in CenterLine is a larger-than-life-sizedreplica of a motorcycle.

No, it’s not for riding.“That’s a sculpture,” said De-

troit Motorcycle owner Dale Ar-chambault. “It was created by aguy named Ron Finch.”

Finch, Archambault said, iswell-known within the motorcy-cling community as bike builder.He is a member of the Interna-tional Master Bike Builders Asso-ciation’s Hall of Fame. His workhas been featured on the Discov-ery Channel’s “Biker Build-Off”show.

“Ron works out of Pontiac andis a real artist,” Archambaultsaid. “He built a giant motorcycleas a piece of sculpture and even-tually sold it. He built the second

one for an art show in GrandRapids.”

Once the show was over, Finchneeded a place to store thesculpture. That’s where Archam-bault comes in.

“We keep the sculpture out inour parking lot during the day,”Archambault said. “We bring it in-side over night and during reallybad weather. When people askme if it’s for sale, I tell them thatFinch is an artist, but he also hasto make a living, so I assume itis.”

Rosezella Lovalvo operates thestore’s clothing department. Shesaid that she is often asked thequestion of whether the sculp-ture is actually a working motor-cycle.

“That just makes me laugh,”Lovalvo said. “But to be fair,there are a lot of novelty bikesout there that actually work. AndFinch put in propane tanks in thesculpture, so it’s possible to haveflames shooting out the exhaust

pipes.”Archambault said the sculp-

ture does act as a good adver-tisement for the store.

“People drive by, see the sculp-ture and stop to get a better lookat it all the time,” Archambaultsaid. “Some decide to come in-side and see what else we haveto sell.

“What really cracks me up is

seeing people pull out their cellphones and try to take a selfiewith the entire sculpture in thebackground of the shot.”

Because the sculpture ismounted on a trailer it is mobileand Finch is able to take it to mo-torcycle shows whenever hewants.

“The sculpture has been to allsorts of interesting places,” Ar-

chambault said. “But the bestchance people have of seeing it ishere at Detroit Motorcycle.”

A gift from a Southeast Michi-gan-based supplier of roboticsautomation will provide OaklandUniversity students with cutting-edge technology in the fields ofrobotics and advanced manufac-turing.

FANUC America Corporationrecently presented Oakland Uni-versity with a gift-in-kind dona-tion of robots, software and 2DiRVision equipment representingan industry value of $474,398.

The gift promises to enhancethe university’s academic offer-ings and boost its impact on theregional economy, said universi-ty spokesperson Brian Bierley.

“We are very excited to havestate-of-the-art equipment tosupport our Robotics and Au-tomation program labs,” saidLouay Chamra, dean of OU’sSchool of Engineering and Com-puter Science.

“The donated equipment willbe used to educate the next gen-eration of engineers in order toprovide the talent needed in in-dustrial robotics and advancedmanufacturing.”

The gift will support develop-ment of an Industrial Roboticsand Automation program withinOU’s Department of Electricaland Computer Engineering,

which will train engineers forhigh-demand jobs in the field.Many of those jobs are located inMetro Detroit as the area is hometo world-class robotics and au-tomation companies.

Oakland University’s partner-ship with FANUC America is a“win-win” for industry and acade-mia, according to Khalid Mirza,Ph.D., visiting assistant professorof engineering at OU.

and we have developed light-weight, but strong steel that canbe used to lightweight today’svehicles,” Krupitzer said.

But the development of newsteels goes beyond just their cre-ation. Once a new steel is devel-oped, both steelmakers and au-tomakers have to determine justwhat the repair requirementsare.

“We worked with GM’s repairexperts to come up with theguidelines and stats for repair ofthese new steels,” Krupitzer said.“When we started 10 years ago,the lightweight steels were new.You just can’t treat these newsteels like the old ones. You haveto develop standards, but nowthat lightweight steel is common,it’s no big deal.”

One advantage to steel,Krupitzer said, is that repairfacilties have the equipment towork on it. Other new materials

might require the purchase ofnew equipment and the retrain-ing of staff so that they can workon the new materials.

“I know Ford is subsidizing re-pair facilities so that they canwork on aluminum,” Krupitzersaid. “But I don’t want to say any-thing bad about Ford becauseeven the new F-150 uses a lot oflightweight steel in the frame.

“It’s a shame,” he addedjokingly, “that they had to coverup all that steel with aluminumbody panels.”

So, Krupitzer said, even withthe development of new materi-als to lightweight vehicles, steelis sticking around.

The steel industry is workingwith automakers to continue todevelop newer versions of steelto meet the auto industry’sneeds.

“We’re very interested in whatChrysler and GM are going to donow that Ford had introducedaluminum to the mix,” Krupitzersaid. “Will they match the F-150’sfuel economy with steel?”

Woodward Dream Cruise Sets Event Times

BEIJING (AP) – The death tollin an explosion at a Chinese autoparts factory has risen to 75, asinvestigators fault poor safetymeasures and news reports re-veal that workers had long com-plained of dangerous levels ofdust at the facility.

Metal dust produced from pol-ishing steel hubcaps ignited themorning of Aug. 2 at the factoryin the eastern Chinese city ofKunshan, causing an explosionthat destroyed almost the entireroof of the plant, city officialssaid.

More than 200 workers were atthe factory at the time of theblast, China’s most serious in-dustrial disaster since a fire at apoultry plant killed 119 people inJune last year.

The metallic dust stuck to theskin of workers, burning between50 and 90 percent of their bodies,said Liu Wei, deputy chief of thehealth bureau in the city, locatedin Jiangsu province, about 600miles southeast of Beijing.

The blast killed 75 people,state media said. Another 186people were injured, most withsevere burns.

State broadcaster CCTVshowed footage of large plumesof thick, black smoke rising fromthe plant, and news websitesposted photos of the dead or in-jured lifted onto the back of largetrucks, their bodies black, pre-sumably from burns or soot.

A preliminary investigationshowed that the blast was likelya dust explosion, said China’s of-ficial Xinhua News Agency. Chi-nese newspapers reported thatworkers at the factory had com-plained over the past yearsabout layers of dust gathering ontheir work tables, and poor venti-lation in the facility.

Jiangsu’s provincial govern-ment website said last week thatinitial investigations by the Kun-shan city government found thatthe factory was at fault in thedust explosion. It did not list spe-

cific safety measures that werenot followed.

A dust explosion is caused bythe fast combustion of particlessuspended in air in an enclosedspace. The particles could in-clude dust or powdered metalssuch as aluminum. They wouldhave to come into contact with aspark such as fire, an overheatedsurface or electrical dischargefrom machinery.

Such explosions have beenblamed for other deadly fires inChina. In 2012, a dust explosionat an aluminum lock polishingworkshop in the eastern city ofWenzhou killed 13 people and in-jured 15. Three years earlier, alu-minum powder exploded at anabandoned factory being rentedout as temporary housing in theeastern city of Danyang, killing11 people and injuring 20.

The factory involved in lastweek’s blast is operated by theKunshan Zhongrong Metal Prod-ucts Company, which, accordingto its website, was set up in 1998and has registered capital of $8.8million.

Its core business is electroplat-ing aluminum alloy wheel hubs,and it supplies General Motorsand other companies, the web-site said. Chinese state mediasaid the factory was built withTaiwanese investment.

GM confirmed that Zhongrongis part of its network of suppli-ers. “We can confirm Zhongrongis a supplier to GM’s global sup-plier Dicastal,” GM said in a state-ment.

Police took away five seniorZhongrong executives to assist inthe investigation, officials said,without providing details.

In an email to the Tech CenterNews, GM China’s Dayna Hartsaid, “We extend our deepestsympathy to the families of thevictims and those injured in thisterrible tragedy. As the authori-ties have noted, an investigationis under way.

“The safety of our customers,employees and suppliers is acentral principle of GM’s busi-ness around the world. ZR is a

supplier to GM’s global supplierDicastal. We will closely monitorthe investigation and, if asked,will provide any resources andinformation that can assist inthis matter.

“We have sufficient inventoryof affected parts and do not ex-pect an impact on production.We are working with our supplierto establish alternate processingcapability.”

GM China Supplier’s Plant Explosion Kills 75

WASHINGTON (AP) – Au-tomakers helped drive hiring inJuly.

In a month when auto plantsusually shut down to retool fornext year’s models, the sectoradded a solid 14,600 jobs, ac-cording to the government’s em-ployment report released Aug. 1.

That increase accounted formore than half the 28,000 manu-facturing jobs added last month,the strongest such gain since No-vember 2013.

Spurring the hiring has beenstronger auto buying. Sales forChrysler, Toyota, Ford and Nis-san each rose by double-digits inJuly compared with the samemonth last year.

More people are borrowing tobuy all of those cars and trucks.The Credit Union National Asso-ciation said that among its mem-bers, auto loans for new vehicleshave risen 19.4 percent year-over-year from June 2014.

A total of 209,000 jobs wereadded last month. The unem-ployment rate rose from 6.1 per-cent to 6.2 percent becausemore people began looking forwork and were newly counted asunemployed.

Residential constructionadded 13,000 of the sector’s22,000 added jobs, even thoughhome sales have been relativelysluggish. The architectural andengineering sector added 8,800.Retailers added 26,700 jobs.

“I liked the idea of getting intoCorvettes because I have a pas-sion for the vehicles and an eyefor detail,” Oakie said. “I then be-gan to reinvent my business.”He opened up the latest ver-

sion of The Vette Shop in 2013.He credits the 2013 Woodward

Dream Cruise for helping get theword out that the shop was backin business.“The Wednesday before the

cruise, there’s the ‘Corvettes onWoodward’ show at the Radis-son Kingsley Hotel in BloomfieldHills,” Oakie said. “Last year, Ibrought a bunch of businesscards to the event and instead ofjust throwing them on the seatsof the Corvettes there, wherethey would be mixed with abunch of other business cards, Ispoke with the owners.”By establishing a relationship

with the Corvette owners, theytook Oakie’s card and remem-bered him when they neededhelp with their cars.“Detroiters love Corvettes,”

Oakie said. “Not only do theylove them, they are very loyal tothem. I’ve had customers comein and tell me they bought theirfirst Corvette in 1965, and thengot another in 1975 and anotherin 1995. I have one customerwho bought one in 2005 andwhen he brought it to the shop,it only had 22,000 miles on it.Corvette owners want their carstaken care of.”Going to the Dream Cruise

Corvette event was really cool,Oakie said. He even ran into anemployee of The Vette Shop whoworked there in the 1970s.“He saw my T-shirt with the

logo on it and asked me how Iknow about The Vette Shop,”Oakie said. “We got to talkingabout the old days. It was great. Igot to talk to Corvette ownerswho came from as far away asCalifornia.”And Oakie is going to this

year’s ‘Corvette on Woodward’event as well.“The people who go to that

event are my kind of people –Corvette people,” Oakie said.
