1 Warranwood Primary School www.warranwood.vic.edu.au Principals Report The sensational singing, dancing and acting skills of our Senior School students were on display Monday night at The Mahon Theatre in Ringwood. The 125 students performed with distinction to depict the challenges for 1960’s America in uniting to embrace integration in society in a light-hearted production of HAIRSPRAY. The human rights issues and social justice story of the teenagers wanting to unite to dance together has been a wonderful platform for our students to reflect on current human rights challenges facing our times. Importantly the opportunity to dance and sing the night away on stage was enjoyed by all and the stamina and dedication of our students to present two sensational shows to sold out audiences was most impressive! Huge congratulations to Jacinta for bringing the show all together and special mention to Cheryl for her wonder- ful help with costumes. Thank you to all our parents and families for your wonderful support of our programs to provide these opportunities to our students and of course a big thanks to our Senior School team and helper teachers who made the night happen by assisting with supervision and support behind stage. The highlights of the conference were the opportunity to attend a number of key note speakers on educational leadership and evidence-based approaches to learning. I was fortunate to be able to listen to Stephen Dinham from Melbourne University discuss the components of “GREAT TEACHING and Suzanne found Michael Fullan’s insights to student engagement in their learning both inspiring and challenging!” It was really reaffirming to hear the work we have been doing as an entire staff over the last couple of years with our gradual release instructional model, the modelling of learning expectations, the implementation of student voice and agency through student owned goals and of course differentiated targeted teaching and learning are all essential as evi-denced based approaches to improve student growth in learning. The conference has also provided us with some questions and opportunities for growth and development with our school’s practice as part of the coming review process and strategic plan development. Stay tuned for our parent forums in the coming weeks to support our school review self-reflection and to assist with defining new goals for our learning community in our next school strategic plan taking our school towards 2022. Exciting times! ENROL FOR PREP 2019- INFORMATION NIGHT JUNE 13 at 7pm Come along to our 2019 PREP information night Please book a tour with Shane or Suzanne to explore our school and Prep program. Enrolments are now open and filling fast. If you know someone who is looking for 2019 encourage them to give us a try and find out why they should choose Warranwood! Please collect enrolment forms from Sue at the office and return them with birth certificate and immunisation records by the end of this term to support planning and preparations. Thanking you in advance. World Club Foot Day- June 14th. CRAZY SOCK DAY Wear your crazy socks and bring a gold coin to support the day. See the poster in the connect for more infor-mation. Support our Warranwood Fathering Project Team Our Fathering Project team have put a call out for Warranwood dads to come along to their Dads only dinner-Japanese and ten pin bowls night at Chirnside Park. The opportunity to meet other dads and build community is an essential feature of the Fathering project. Come along to both dinner and bowls or come to one or the other. It will be great to see dads getting together. See the information in the Fathering Project advert for booking de-tails. Also consider the opportunity to take your children into the Shrine of Remembrance for a tour at 10am on Sun-day 24th June. Our Parent Teacher interview site will be opened on Tuesday afternoon next week. You will receive an email on compass with all details to make the booking. Interviews will take place on Monday 25th between 2pm- 8.30pm and then again on Tuesday 26th 3.45- 5.15pm. The interviews are for 15-minute intervals and we ask that if you feel you may need to talk more than this you should make an appointment with your teacher to meet at another time. This will ensure we are able to run on time and not keep anyone waiting. To support the interview process students will be participating in alternative programs during the afternoon of the interviews from 2pm. I will have more information about interviews in next week’s Connect. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - The Fathering Project @ Warranwood After a fantastic welcome event for Dads followed by a Games Night in the hall and on the oval in Term 1, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would like to invite all Dads, Key Male Friends and kids to our Term 2 events. Remember, we are planning opportunities for Dads and kids to spend time together and build a com- munity within the school.

Assistant Principal’s Report Domain #4 Positive Engagement-Promoting complete immersion in ac-tivities through understanding the nature of engagement, the pathways to it and the function it has on individual wellbeing. Over the next couple of weeks our students will be given further opportu-nities to have a voice to allow for deeper learning and engagement with their learning. Prior to the staff planning for the next topic the teachers will give the students an opportunity to inform them of what they know and what they are wondering about or wanting to learn to guide their planning day and engage the students with their learning from their point of need. The students will also be reassessing their learning goals in order to be prepared when they are involved in the 3 way interviews in Week 11. This will avail the students with the opportunity to reflect on their own learning

and how they have progressed according to the goals that have been set by themselves in consultation with their teacher. Authentic student involvement and engagement occurs when decision making is truly shared with the students. As educators, we understand that greater student engagement will encourage student suc-cess. New First Aid Practices: In order to improve communication procedures from the Wendy in the First Aid room we have imple-mented a notice that will be sent home with your child if they have had a minor injury throughout the day. This notice will outline what the injury was and the First Aid that was given. We will always contact you personally if the injuries are more severe i.e. head injuries or when your child is extremely unwell which requires them to go home. Enjoy the long weekend break. PERFORMING ARTS NEWS

HAIRSPRAY PRODUCTION CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THEIR HAIRSPRAY PRODUCTION… WOW…. What a Night! Thanks to the community for their feedback, I personally feel very proud of the stu-dents. They worked with enthusiasm throughout the rehearsal process and explored depth of character, developed singing and dance skills and owned their performance skills up there on stage. A DVD and Pro-fessional photos from the performance will be available to purchase. Order forms will be on Compass. The Performing Arts program I run here at Warranwood from Prep-6 allows me as a teacher to put on 4 pro-ductions across the levels each year and it is a lot of hard work but very rewarding to see the development of skills from one year to the next. I work at instilling the skills at prep and building the drama, dance, acting, music, media, singing, choreography and performance skills each year until you get the polished Performing Arts productions in theatres and cinemas. The students and I together spend hours putting our shows to-gether and even the staff are blown away when they see the results for the first time in the Dress Rehears-als or performance nights. I am now working on editing the green screen movie for the Junior school movie titled BULLY to premiere at Reading Cinemas on Monday July 30th, while also starting the auditioning pro-cess for the Middle School production of Beauty and the Beast. Finally thank you to the staff of each level who are always appreciative and supportive when they see the finished products at the show or movie nights. District Cross Country 2nd

Congratulations to the cross country runners who represented the school so proudly on Tuesday. To

finish second in our district showed that all runners were out there to give their best efforts. They trained

hard leading up to this event and I’m proud of their sense of team and the way they supported each oth-

er. With a full team gaining points, the result could have been one better for our school. Thanks to Dyl-

an, too, for helping out at training. There was a really enthusiastic group each Wednesday. Family sup-

port at Domeney Reserve was also great. Eight students (highlighted) will be proceeding to the Division

Cross Country next Tuesday 12 June at Yarra Valley Racecourse. We also have 4 students who fin-

ished 11th and 12th as emergencies for the Division event.

Food For Thought

Here is a lunch box tip that reduces plastic waste and better still saves save you money.

Cost $4.20

$5.83 per 100g

7 pieces of plastic

waste

Cost $2.85 $3.56 per 100g 1 piece of plastic waste

Cost $1.95 for 8 X as much $0.49 per 100g 1 small piece of plastic waste Pop it yourself - The kids love hearing it, then top with butter, salt or a little icing sugar mmm

Win for your wallet, win for the planet, and win for the lunchbox!

World Environment Day On Monday 5th of June each class collected and counted all the rubbish from lunchboxes. The school total was 812 pieces of rubbish. To celebrate World Environment Day we challenged parents and fami-lies to pack a ‘Nude Food’ lunchbox. On Tuesday the school total was 321 pieces of rubbish!!! An amazing outcome and effort by all. Congratulations to Prep F for having only 11 pieces of rubbish in their whole grade! Our challenge is to now be conscious of the choices we make as consumers and aware of our impact to influence students and children and to continue this effort. Julia Dove
