Grade 5/6 Intramurals

The floor hockey schedule finished at the beginning of January, with the Panthers winning the A final. We then played a basketball shooting game called 11 - simi-lar to the game 21. The Cougars finished on top of that league. Currently grade 5 and 6 are playing a 4 on 4 basketball schedule. It has been good exercise, and the games have been high scor-ing. House captains continue to show leadership by subbing people fairly, and demonstrating good sportsmanship.

Mrs. Gerwing, Mr. Gray

Thank you The grade 6 class would like to thank Todd Tkach, Jesslyn and Jordan Plett for speak-ing to our Careers class. Todd explained how being a helicopter pilot has led to a very interesting career. He also told us how helicopters are used in fighting fires, in the travel industry, and for mineral ex-ploration. Todd is a CRHS graduate who now owns a very successful aviation busi-ness, in addition to being a pilot.

His daughter Jesslyn has flown a variety of planes, including float planes. She ex-plained how having a strong work ethic has helped her succeed in a traditionally male occupation. Her husband Jordan has had a varied flight experience, from flying business executives across the country, to being part of flying to hospitals to transport organ donations.

All three of these speakers had flown in northern Canada to remote communities to bring medical aid, supplies, and for emer-gency transport.

The grade 6 class was fortunate to learn about this field of work. Thanks to Nata-sha for making it possible.

Grade 6 Curling The grade 6's had a great experience curling in Phys.ed. They began the week as beginners, where getting a rock into the rings was just a dream. After three phys.ed classes and a Mini-Spiel, they were able to draw rocks in, do take outs, put up guards, and sweep safely.

Thank you to all parents and grandparents who volunteered their time either during the week or on Friday at the bonspiel. In the words of one of our students, "Look at all the people watching - we have fans!!"

Thank you to Austin Wiens and Lexi Yurkowski for providing excellent role models for our young curlers. Many thanks to Colin for helping us out, and keeping the ice in great shape..

Each rink made a poster for their team. Check them out on the bulletin board at the curling rink. Hurry Hard! Mrs. Gerwing

Drama practices have been going well. Students are working hard to rehearse their lines and become performance ready. February will be a busy month with both noon and afternoon practices scheduled. Each student received a copy of this schedule and are expected to attend all assigned days.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES The Education Act states

that: Every pupil shall: (a)

Attend school regularly and

In the event of an accumulation of unexcused absences, CRJSHS administration and teachers will be proactive in contacting families. We have processes in place to encourage regular and punctual attendance. Mrs. Carson will make contact with every class early in Semester II to discuss.

Spotlight on Learning:

In ELA 9, students are starting the unit "All About Me". In this unit they will explore the concepts, ideas, and events that shape them into the people they are and will develop to be. We will be looking at various literature and completing a series of assignments the will help us be successful in our final assessment- a brochure that paints a clear picture of who students are currently, and goals and messages for their future self.

Please ask your child what is new in our assessment this semester and how that looks a bit different from last semester. I'm excited to implement some new practices and the grade nines have always been very receptive to these changes.

Health in grade nine is getting into the outcome healthy relationships. This work around this outcome is designed to teach students how to identify factors that cause unhealthy relationships. In addition, we look at ways to recognize signs of toxic or unhealthy relationship. Students are working on one of six options to demonstrate their understanding of this outcome. There was a great variety of options for this assignment, please ask your child the one they chose- their answer may surprise you. S. Silcox

February Events We are starting off the month of February with a

spirit day. On February 2nd we are hav-

ing Dress Up as an Animal Day followed by Ca-

mo Day on February 8th. We also have a Her-

shey Kiss Sale from Februrary 13th until Febru-

ary 17th as well as a Pop Crush Sale. The Her-

sey Kisses and Pop Crush Sale work just like the

Candy Cane Sale. You can buy for anyone within

the school. For the Crush Sale, we are going

to have orange for a friend, pink for like and pur-

ple for love. We did the Hersey Kiss Sale last

year but the Pop Crush Sale is new this year.

We have a busy day on the 14th of February.

Our spirit day is red, white and pink day and we

have a pep rally at 1 o'clock. BOSS also has a

game planned for the students during the day. All

the boys received a necklace with a paper heart

on it and during breaks and lunch they cannot

speak to the girls. If a boy talks to a girl they

have to give their necklace to the girl.

We are still waiting for our clothing orders which

are expected to arrive before February break. As soon as they arrive we will be sending them

home. A reminder that we did order extra shirts,

hoodies and sweats for purchase.
