What an exciting issue of Warmblood Stallions of North America this has been to create! First of all, its not often that we are invit-ed to a ground-breaking meeting that could have profound e ects on breeders. Because this magazine only comes out once a year, that almost never happens! In order to accept, I chose to delay our publication deadline for just a few days so that I could attend the meeting of Breeders and Registries at the USEF annual meetingand it was so worth the trip. To watch breed registries, leadership and representatives of USEF and a liates, individual breeders and others get together and commit to communication and coordination of future plans was tremendous. Read Summer Sto els article on page 30 about how USHJA and USEF are making positive horse ID a reality, and about some of the plans in the works to bridge the gap between breeders and sport. My sidebar on page 33 describes this meeting and what it could mean for breeders.

Secondly, we have a wonderful selections to o er you for 2016! As always, there is a range of stallions in these pages, from unproven to international competitors. Some will be familiar to my readers, and theres an exciting mix of stallions new to our pages. Dont miss the many stallions standing in Canada; US breeders can take advantage of the current exchange rate to get a great deal!

Warmblood Stallions of North America is proud to be once again the o cial stallion magazine of the American Trakehner Association, and we o er a special ATA section, with stallions and also Association newsall starting on page 98. We are also the o cial magazine for the

Swedish Warmblood Association of North Americalook for Swedish stallions in the Main section of Stallion Pro les.

e strong winds of change are blowing. In this new age of tech-nology and social media, the world is becoming more connect-ed and so is the sport horse industry. In the past, geographical distances and a fragmented system stood in the way of bridging the gap between breeding and sport in North America. But, as in so many other industries, inspiration and ingenuity have sparked the dawn of an innovative new era. We are taking giant steps on a road leading to synergy between North American breed orga-nizations and sports federations as we work jointly to produce a solid pipeline of horses for every level of rider and sport. It is no longer a dream. It is a reality and the e ort is already underway in several major areas.

    Positive Horse Identi cation

One of the most crucial elements in production of sport horses is positive identi cation. is is important on multiple levels. First, in order for a breeder to track the success of their breeding program and analyze needed changes, horses must be positively identi ed to track their success in sport and breeding. Without this, breeders are forced to make decisions blindly or according to inaccurate data. Secondly, breed organizations rely on horse identi cation to create breeding standards and assess quality. Being able to track the success of progeny in sport and breeding helps these organizations dictate which characteristics, types, and bloodlines are relevant in modern day sport. e ability to make these crucial breeding standard decisions leads to a higher percentage of successful horses in sport. Being able to track these horses through their sport careers adds proof to the success of the breeding philosophy. erefore, when a breed organization acquires a reputation for producing high quality sport horses, it encourages breeders to increase production. us, growth in the industry is sparked both for breeder and for breed organization. Lastly, having complete and accurate data on horses provided through positive identi cation aids competition federations in creating platforms to develop horses for sport and create a suc-cessful pipeline for the future. is pipeline is the vital lifeblood of any competition federation and the foundation upon which future riders will depend.

With that in mind, the USHJA pioneered a groundbreaking rule change that will pave the way for horses bred and born in North America to be positively identi ed, thus distinguishing them

from their foreign counterparts and giving credit where credit is due. is rule change requires all horses participating in hunter, jumper, or equitation classes to be positively identi ed and micro-chipped beginning December 1, 2017. e proposed rule change went through a couple of modi cations during the USHJA Annual Meeting, but was unanimously passed by the board at the end. After the USHJA Annual Meeting, it went up for approval at the USEF Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. ere were two minor clari cations made: (1) microchipping is required for horses competing in hunter/jumper/equitation classes that require USHJA registration (because national breeds hold compe-titions with hunter/jumper/equitation classes that do not require USHJA registration) and (2) age veri cation can only be proven for age-veri ed classes through breed registry passport, paper, or certi cate of pedigree. (See box for approved rule change.) In doing so, it sets the stage for the USHJA to create transpar-ency within the sport, create needed programs for young horse development, and support American breeders with the ability to track the success of their breeding programs. It also demonstrates USEF/USHJAs desire to align interests with the warmblood registries and promote North American breeding.

In response to these rule changes, registries such as the AES and

Newly Enacted USHJA Rules3.1 In addition to the provisions of HU 101.1, on or after December 1, 2017, all horses competing in classes that require USHJA horse registration must provide a microchip number that veri es their animals identity in order to compete for points, money won or be eligible for Federation and/or USHJA programs and awards where horses are required to be recorded or registered.3.2 A microchip used to verify identity must be a fteen digit ISO com-pliant 11784/11785 chip and be implanted in the nuchal ligament of the animal.3.3 For classes that require age veri cation, age can be veri ed only through the following identi cation documents:a. Registration papers or passport issued by a World Breed Federation Sport Horse (WBFSH) recognized registry.b. Registration papers or Certi cate of Pedigree from a breed or sport horse registry.3.4 is rule will have a transition period from December 1, 2017 to No-vember 30, 2018. During this period, animals that are not in compliance with this rule will not receive points or be eligible for Federation and/or USHJA programs and awards. After this period, all horses that are com-peting in classes which require USHJA registration which are not micro-chipped will be ineligible to compete in Federation licensed competitions.

RPSI have risen to the occasion to provide every horse, regard-less of whether or not the pedigree can be tracked, with a UELN and a registration passport that links the UELN to a microchip number and DNA. Even though these are not o cially approved for breeding within the registry, it provides a starting point for horses currently within the competition system to receive the necessary identi cation for sport. Registration with the AES is available online at www.aesna.horse and HID passports cost $99. Please contact Ann with RPSI for more details regarding their HID passports at [email protected]. ere is an option for every horse to be able to participate in sport. Further options with other registries will be presented in future educational articles.

Both sport federations and breed registries are working cohesively and intently to ensure a successful future for sport horse breeding and development in North America.

Connecting Young Horses and Developing Riders ere were also many advances made during 2015 in the e ort to connect owners, riders, and trainers to North American-bred young horses and breeders. Among these were the pilot USEF Developing Young Horse/Young Rider Clinic held at Spy Coast Farm, the Gladstone Clinic, and the Young Horse Series Fi-nals in Tryon. However, it became evident through all of these endeavors that one vital piece to the puzzle was missing - a joint collaboration between the sport horse breed registries, the various disciplines, and USEF. In other countries, the close working relationship between breed organizations and sport federations has proved to create a successful united force in the production and development of horses for both national and international sport. us, in a groundbreaking e ort to start building the new

North American pipeline, USEF and USHJA invited the various American sport horse registries to an initial meet and greet at the conclusion of the North American Stallion Testing in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 29th, 2015 to propose collaboration. Multiple registries were able to attend and the atmosphere was invigorating. Topics such as positive horse identifi cation, joint education opportunities, cooperation to identify prospects within North America, and data exchange were discussed. It was sug-gested that outreach and involvement should be inclusive, not ex-clusive, and true success would come with collaboration between USEF, USHJA, the other disciplines, and breed organizations. At the conclusion, all parties left excited and inspired about future joint endeavors. Mary Babick, Vice President of USHJA and one of the main driving forces behind this initiative, stated, I recently became aware of the untapped resources of our American Breed-ers. I am very pleased to be a part of the process that will bring the US back to its roots.

Th e next step was taken during the USEF Annual Meeting on January 13, 2016. Following the November meeting, USEF President Chrystine Tauber issued a personal invitation to over forty representatives of USEF, USHJA, USDF, USEA, WBFSH, and the sport horse breed organizations that register horses in the United States to reconvene during the USEF Annual Meeting and continue progress on the initiative of connecting the breeding and sport sectors. Over sixty individuals attended the meeting and it was an unprecedented success. Th e Breed Registry Joint Meeting, held recently at the 2016 USEF Annual Meeting, brought together all the elements that are necessary for positive change: the right people, the right timing, and the right attitude.

Th e right people are the ones with an interest in making the horse breeding industry stronger, smarter, and more profi tablestarting with USEF President Chrystine Tauber, who issued special invitations, and spoke at the meeting. Mary Babick, the person who spearheaded the new USHJA rule change, was the primary presenter; and the competition side was represented among the presenters by DiAnn Langer, Developing Rider Chef dEquipe. Th e meeting was chaired by Summer Sto el, a warm-blood breeder, and a key fi gure in the move toward positive horse ID and microchipping through her work on the USEF Horse ID Task Force and the USHJA Jumper Breeding Committee.

Attendees included both individuals and representatives of key groups, many of whom had never been in the same room together before this meeting. Several warmblood registries were represented, USEF and many of its discipline and national breed a liates were there, as were several individual breeders. Some had been present at the initial meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, coordinated by Summer Sto el and held in conjunction with the fi nal days of the North American Stallion Testing; but this USEF meeting brought in new participants with a wide cross section of interests.

Th e right timing has a lot to do with the movement toward positive horse identifi cation, which gained huge momentum in 2015 as di erent groups considered the advantages and analyzed the logistics of implementation. A system of assigning a life number to each horse, and tying it to microchips for all compe-tition horses, is now possible, largely due to new data tracking options for horses. With these pieces in place, positive horse ID is on its way to becoming a reality. Th e potential benefi ts are huge: for horses, for fair competition, for data tracking that

will benefi t everyone from breeders to USEF and our countrys status on the international stage.

Th e right attitude was perhaps the single most impressive aspect of this meeting. In one room were leaders and representatives from USEF, USHJA and other discipline a liates, breed regis-tries, national breeds, individual breeders and breeding farm rep-resentatives, breed show organizers, and other individualsand the prevailing attitude was one of cooperation, with a respect that allowed open communication. USEF and a liate leaders took a proactive role, and conveyed their commitment to initiat-ing and supporting programs to recognize and benefi t breeders. Th ey spoke. Th ey expressed their recognition of the work breed-ers do; they acknowledged the need for supporting breeders in their quest to produce top-quality, competitive horses for US equestrian sport. Th ey listened. Individuals and representatives spoke to the di erent challenges they face, and described their approaches, their programs, their solutions. Perspectives were shared; priorities were addressed.

Th e fundamental message is clear: the US does not have a sys-tematic infrastructure to support the production of top-quality horses for US sport, and yet we hope to compete against nations that do. If we expect to compete on the world stage successfully, we need to produce our own top horses rather than looking to Europe. Th e European nations, after all, will hardly sell us their best competition horses! And we can produce top horses. Th e US has experienced and successful warmblood and sport horse breeders; the US has produced top-quality foals and top-level competition horses. What it doesnt have are the coordinated programs that will systematically provide education, identify promising foals, and provide the necessary pieces that make up a pipeline between breeders and competitors. Th e results of this meeting were the identifi cation of specifi c missing pieces, and possible solutions. Watch for tangible benefi ts to US breeders as this work is carried forward.

between both breed organizations and sport federations in order to accurately connect the dots of a horses life, development of a young horse trainer education system, a ordable young horse competition platforms, and data exchange. Together, the devel-opment of these areas will create a solid network of support for breeders and young horses and make North America an interna-tionally respected producer of sport horses.

    Turning Dreams into Reality

Of course, many of these subjects have been brought up before. However, this is the fi rst time the connection to sport horse breeding in North America is being made at the top of the Fed-eration/A liate level. Th e sport sector here in the US is taking a serious look at the tangible steps they can take to support the growth of the sport horse industry within our borders. Look for visible results of this e ort in 2016 between these two groups that will include, but are not limited to:

Continued e orts to improve positive horse identifi cation across organizations

Author Summer Sto el is the owner of Silver Creek Farms and has bred horses that are competing both nationally and internationally. In addition to her work

with the breed registries/international federations and hosting the North Ameri-can Stallion Testing, she also currently serves on the USEF Horse ID Task Force

Committee and USHJA Jumper Breeding Committee.

Lisa Lourie was one of several speakers at the 2016 USEF meeting (see page 33) who provided di erent perspectives and experiences that will ultimately inform the direction new programs might take. As someone who wears multiple hats (breeder, owner of Spy Coast Farm, business partner in horse shows, supporter of the Young Horse Shows, and a member of multiple breed registries), Lisa spoke on several issues: her concern that the US maintain its place on the world stage, a need for fair and a ordable shows for young horses, the lack of availability of young horse trainers. Other speakers included representatives of several breed registries, both warmblood and national breeds; representatives of discipline a liates; and individual breeders.

by Christopher HectorCor de la BryreBorn: 1968Died: 2000Height: 169 cm Breeder: T. Essayan is article is reprinted with kind permission of the author,

Christopher Hector, e Horse Magazine, www.HorseMagazine.com Cor de la Bryre is the stallion that revolutionized jumping horse breeding. His name is the one astute breeders like to see, espe-cially on the mare line, for Corde tends to give great form over a jump. He stood at Siethwende from 1971 to 1984, Zangersheide 1985, Elmshorn 1986 to 1988, Sollwittfeld from 1989 until his death in 2000.

His sire, the French Th oroughbred Rantzau, was bred to be a jumper, being a descendant of the enormously infl uential Bay Ronald. Rantzau was by Foxlight by Foxhunter by Foxlaw by Son-In-Law by Dark Ronald by Bay Ronald.

A serious racehorse, Rantzau was the third-ranked three-year-old of his yearin nine races between 2000 and 3000 metres, he won two and was placed fi ve times. Purchased by the National Stud, he arrived at the stallion depot of Saint-L on January 5th, 1951. Of Rantzau, the stud inspector noted: good front exten-sion, remarkably built through the shoulder and fore-arm, long haunches, this classy stallion of rare nobility, also has low-placed joints and covers ground.

As late as 1976, when he had been dead for fi ve years, Rantzau was still 3rd on the jumping sires rankings; by 1980 he had moved into 4th place. He remained for many years one of the leading sires of broodmares. Rantzau produced 26 licensed sons who in turn produced 17 sires.

On the dam side, Cor de la Bryre was royally bred, out of Quenotte B, by Lurioso, a son of the most infl uential Precipita-tion son, Furioso. In French jumping circles, Furioso had been a sensation, siring the 1964 Olympic gold medalist, Lutteur B and the world showjumping champion of 1968, Pomone B. Lurioso was himself a sire of international showjumpers.

Cor de la Bryres grandam just escaped a trip to the abattoirs. She was one of a group of mares whose owner died with no heir. Th e neighbours took care of getting rid of the breeding stock with most of them going to slaughter. Pascal Renauldon, in his article, Cor de la Bryre, A Gift From Heaven (Z Magazine, February 1998), tells the story:

Two mares escaped premature death. One was called Hirondelle du Bois Margot; we fi nd her name in the pedigree of Pomone B, Allegro (another fi ne international showjumper), Fair Play III and therefore in Narcos II and all his o spring! Th e other was called Vestale du Bois Margot and was sold to a certain Mr Le-noir in the province of Sarthe. A lucky man, as she would be the grandam of Cor de la Bryre. Vestale enriched the world with a great number of foals whose o spring would prove themselves in the sport. ... A remarkable female line. Quenotte (by Lurioso) was born in 1960 and Cor de la Bryre was her fi rst foal.

Xaiver Ribard was one of the fi rst French breeders to stand a

Rantzau, sire of Cor de la Bryre. Above, Rantzau during his racing career. Left, close to the end of his career at St L stud.

private stallion in competition to the state stud department. He stood at his Normandy stud the Furioso II son, Brilloso, who was the sire of a number of competitors and stallions, including Livarot, sire of Souviens Toi III.

Ribard bought colts to rear these up as breeding stallions. One day he saw a tiny bay, which he bought straight away. I liked his conformation and breeding, it was a great colt. Ribard recognized a future stallion, even though its high-blooded conformation did not fi t in with the popular type at the timea time when one believed that power was impossible without body.

Th e local authorities did not like the colt, and in 1970, the se-lection committee of the Haras du Pin visited his owner, Xavier Ribard and suggested that is not breeding stock; hes too much of a sport horse. Better geld him; hell make a useful gelding.

Ribard was disappointed but the world did not stop turning. Business continued and he leased, for example, his stallion Urioso to Alwin Schockemhle. At that time, six years after the victo-ry of Lutteur B at the Tokyo Olympics and four years after the victory of Pomone B at the Buenos Aires World Championship, breeding Europe was crazy about Furioso xx Alwin, member of the Oldenburg studbook, had leased Urioso, but would present him for selection in Holstein. As he went to see some horses in Normandy he asked Maas J. Hell to come along. Ribard remem-bers the following: Th ey asked me if I could show them some other stallions. I had another four, which I showed them on the side of the road, as they were stabled 10 kilometres away. Th ey immediately pointed at Cor de la Bryre and asked if he was for sale. Because I had just received the advice to have him gelded by the director of Haras, I sold him there and then. He left in February, together with Urioso.

For Bfrs 420,000 / NLG 23,000, the Germans bought a stallion that would, later in Holstein, grow into the stallion of the century. ...I must add that the horse did not show himself very well that time; it was January and he was not in great condition. He had no shine on his coat and wasnt shod. I was o ered the chance to let him go and I had been deeply disappointed by the view of the director of Haras barely ten days before. I was on the point of having him gelded. Although he had a distinct stallion behaviour, he was very well-man-nered. A horse like that is more easy to sell nowadays.

When Cor de la Bryre arrived, the breeders were suspicious at fi rst. Germany was not really waiting for what, apparently, was not wanted in France. But Hell trusted his gut feeling that told him this is it, this stallion will upgrade our slightly heavy native stock, a population in which power, carefulness and bascule are already fi rmly rooted, but in which this stallion could improve technique.

But then, at the end of the winter 1971, Maas Hell insulted a Holsteiner studbook delegation who refused to buy the rough colt. Th e stallion had been rejected by the French and this did not inspire the committee with much confi dence. At his wits end, Hell o ered to keep the stallion for his own account and sell him to them after, when he passed his stallion test. Th at argument fell

on willing ears, and a couple of days later the gentlemen agreed. When the colt ar-rived at Elmshorn, however, they had not exactly laid out the red carpet for him. He was nevertheless stationed at Siethwende. Gradually the suspicion of the breeders disappeared: they had given him no less than 70 mares to serve in his fi rst season. In that same year Cor de la Bryre had to do his perfor-mance test. Th ere he showed that he had all the qualities that are desirable in a good sirein an era in which the sport was not a selection criterion. Th e breeders watch-ing the performance of the stallions saw an eager worker with a lot of energy and a golden temperament. An intelligent and alert horse that displays above average jumping potential besides; technique and manner were perfect, he completes the jump well, had a fast foreleg and an excellent use of the back, according to the com-mittee report.

Cor de la Bryre was on his way to being one of the greatest stallions of all times, and he was not only a sire himself, but a sire of sires.

Th e full brothers Caletto I, II were stars, as were the quintet of brothers, Calypso I to V. In the jumping arena, his handsome grey son Corrado has been a star for Franke Sloothaak, while Cordalm Z with Gilbert Bckmann has also been successful at international level. Both went on to become infl uential sires. Out of the 70 mares in his fi rst season, Cor de la Bryre produced four colts that went on to be licensed. He was a stallion of great vigour, and as late as 1977 served a full book of 111 mares.

Although best known as a sire of jumping horses, Cor de la Bryre was also the sire of Corlandus, a World Cup Dressage Champion in 1989, and his sons Calypso I and Calypso II have proven useful sires of dressage horses. Former German Olympic team member Chacomo, ridden by Alexandra Simons de Ridder, was by Calypso I, as was Alexandras other FEI star, Champus.

In the WBFSH ratings for 1992/2001, Cor de la Bryre is ranked 18th with 28 points-earning progeny, but there are a staggering 20 own sons on the rankings: Calando I, II, IV; Caletto I, II; Calvados I, II; Calypso I, II, III; Cantares, Carneval, Carte dOr, Casanova, Cavalier Royale, Cinzano, Constant, Contact, Corrado I, Cortez 679, Cosinus. Th ere are also 12 grandsons of Cor de la Bryre in the standingsnot to mention important stallions like Carthago and Burggraaf, who are out of Cor de la Bryre mares.

Here is Romedio Graf von Th un-Hohenstein in his book, Th e Hol-steiner Horse, commenting on Cor de la Bryres form over a jump:

When the goal was to join the exciting powerful jumping ability of the Holsteiner with a sophisticated skill, combined with an ideal bascule, sooner or later a stallion such as Cor de la Bryre had to be selected. Th e arching back, like a taut band of steel combined with the super elastic end gives limitless, but always expedient, springing capability to the natural dynamics of each e ort. Add to that ease of riding, marvelous disposition, and a fl oating, highly balanced canter. Th ese qualities are absolutely to the benefi t of young horses, who will no longer have to pay with premature breakdowns caused by jumping and showing solely with a raw, crude jumping talent.

And perhaps it was a case of a stallion being in the right place at the right time. French equestrian journalist Bernard le Courtois is fi rmly convinced that, left in France, Cor de la Bryre would have simply confi rmed the original assessment of the French selection committee.

According to Bernard: Some stallions cross very well in a partic-ular situation. For example, Cor de la Bryre. He was exceptional in the 70s in Holstein because he was a horse that was very quick with the front legs. He did not have the power on the back side, but he was a very electric horse, with the blood of the Th orough-bred, Rantzau, and mixed with the heavy Holsteiner mares, he was fantastic. But when we tried to breed Cor de la Bryre with the French mares, we had rabbits. Cor de la Bryre needed a very strong mare, and we didnt have this kind of mare in France.

In the French annual review, Monneron 2007-2008, Bernard

le Courtois has gone through the FEI list of the top 2515 best showjumpers to compile a stallion ranking of the top 75 stallions, based on CSI winners. He fi nds that, after Alm, Cor de la Bryre is the most infl uential sire. Corde himself still holds 51st place on the rankings with 6 CSI winners, and 14 of his sons make up 19% of the 75 best stallions in the world.

Th e most successful of these sons is Corrado I, who occupies 23rd spot with 11 winners, with four sons of Corrado also featuring in the top 75: Corofi no is 30th with 10 representatives, Coriano 43rd with 7, Indorado 43rd with 7, and Clinton 64th with 5.

Cor de la Bryres infl uence is also transmitted via the full brothers Caletto I & II. Although Caletto II does not make the top 75, he is represented by his sons, Caretino (24th with 11 winners) and Calvaro (65th with 5). Caletto I himself, is in 65th place with 5 winners, and is represented by his son Cantus (30th with 10). Can-tus is the sire of Calido I who is in 19th place with 12 winners.

Another Cor de la Bryre son, Calypso II is well represented on the top 75 through his son, Contender, sitting in 5th with 28 representatives.

At the 2014 WEG in Normandy, the stallion with the most representatives was the Cor de la Bryre great grandson, Cornet Obolensky who was represented by a total of seven representa-tives. In all the Cor de la Bryre line provided 24 of the contes-tants in Caen, the most successful of which were the great grand-son, Casall (5th) and the great great grand son, Cornet dAmour (6th). the infl uence of the French colt that no one wanted lives on and on and on

Photo: Kim Berlie PhotographyAlchimist is the whole package! From being super athletic in the show ring, including elastic gaits and an easy jump with lots of scope, to being a laid-back gentleman to handle. Alchimist is bold and brave, with big movement that turns heads! Alchimist has beautifully correct conformation, a kind eye, and strong good feet. Alchimist is seen as a great refi ner. His foals are prime ex-amples of this, being well put together, strong and healthy, with easy trainable minds! His fi rst o spring are just starting under saddle and are showing lots of potential.

Alchimists sire, Eurocommerce Vancouver ridden by Gerco Schroder, is internationally renowned; with numerous wins and placings at the 1.60m level and described by Gerco as a stallion with unlimited jumping ability. Alchimist is the grandson of Le Tot de Semilly, who is considered one of the greatest breeding stallions of the Selle Francais stud book of today, as he passes on his strength, style, suppleness, carefulness, and exceptional mind to his descendants. Horses like Diamant de Semilly, Itot du Chateau, Lamm de Fetan, Made in Semilly, Orient Express, and Emerald to name a few, are descendants from Le Tot de Semilly.

On Alchimists dam side we see the best Anglo Arabian horses Holland has produced over the years, with Gagson Wimborn being known as the best for producing wonderful jumpers and eventers. Famous stallions like Gag xx and Exillio xx are all at the root of this wonderful stallion.

At the 2014 CWHBA Stallion performance test, Alchimist scored 10s for character and temperament, 9 for trot, 8 for canter and 8 for scope and technique. I couldnt wipe the smile of my face while on this horse! He is so fun and makes the jumping easy! -Stallion inspection rider-

Whether your looking to breed your nextGrand Prix jumper, eventer or a beautiful jr/am horse, Alchimist is your guy!
