Warm Up Sept. 241. Solve and graph: 5 – 3x < 26

3. The East Meck marching band is selling raffle tickets to raise money. They have $400 right now, and are selling raffle tickets for $3 each. If they need at least $1200 to buy a new tuba, how many raffle tickets do they need to sell?

4. Solve

5. You earned an average of 88, 94, and 90 on your first three tests. You want to make at least a 93 in the class. What grade do you need on the next test to achieve your goal?

Quiz Time• Clear your desk of everything except a

pencil and a calculator.

• Complete the quiz SILENTLY. Check over your answers when you are done.

• Good luck!

Compound Inequalities

Compound inequalities are inequalities that have 2 parts.

Some compound inequalities look like this:

-5 < x < 10 x < - 4 or x > 2

Compound Inequalities• How would I represent this situation

using an inequality?• At the movie theater, children 9 and under

get a discount. Senior citizens over 65 also get a discount. Who all gets a discount?

• Question to think about: can a person be younger than 9 and over 65 at the same time?

• NO! They must be one OR the other.

“Or” Inequalities• In this situation, if x represents the ages

of people that get a discount, we know that:

x ≤ 9 OR x ≥ 65

• The graph for this inequality looks like:

Think-Pair-Share

• Take 30 seconds to think of another real life situation that could be represented with an “or” inequality.

• Then, share with your neighbors what you came up with.

• We’ll share some with the class.

Solving “or” Inequalities• Luckily, these always

come as 2 separate inequalities with the word “or” in the middle.

• Step 1: Solve each inequality independently

• Step 2: Graph your solutions on the same graph.

Example:

3x + 11 < 2 or 5x + 9 > 44

You try two!

6b – 1 < -7 or 2b + 1 > 5 5 + m > 4 or 7m < -35

How about this slightly scarier one? 4n + 2 ≥ 6n + 8 or –n + 7 < 4n – 3

You try these two.• 4 – 7k < -3k – 4 OR 5k + 2 ≤ 8 – k

• -8k + 7 < -7k + 2 or -6 + 2k ≤ -3k – 6

Partner on the right solve and graph this problem:

WHEN I SAY GO: Switch sticky notes with your partner and check their work. If you find a mistake, talk it out with them. When BOTH of you agree on BOTH problems, put your sticky notes on the back board. Who can be the first pair to get the correct answer??

Test Return

• Look through the test to make sure you understand everything. Now is a good time to ask questions about it.

• Make sure you give it back to me before you leave class today.
