Warm up Problem

• Jim is working 35 hours this week and he is paid $8.25 per hour. How much will Jim’s straight-time pay be this week?

• Answer• STP = 8.25 * 35 = $288.75• Questions from yesterday?

Lesson Objective

Calculate straight-time, overtime, and total pay.

Content Vocabulary

overtime pay

overtime pay

Extra pay for hours worked beyond the regular number of hours.

• Many companies (not all) are required by law to pay employees extra for working more than 40 hours in one week.

• Overtime rate When a company pays you overtime, you are being paid extra for working more hours than is legal (or company policy) in one week (usually anything over 40) The over time rate is your hourly rate for those hours only

• See handout

• Hours considered “overtime” may vary by company. Employers also pay extra for working on holidays.

• Police officers get paid overtime for going to court.

• Why do employers pay a higher rate for overtime work?

• Overtime is normally paid at “time and a half” • Do teachers get paid overtime for correcting papers at night?• Why or why not?

Content Vocabulary

time and a half

time and a half

An overtime pay rate of 1½ times the regular hourly rate.

Content Vocabulary

double time

double time

An overtime pay rate of twice the regular hourly rate.

Example: Zach is paid $8.20 an hour for a regular 40-hour week. His overtime rate is “time and a half.” This week Zach worked his regular 40 hours plus 10 hours of

overtime. What is his Gross Pay?

• First you need to find Zach’s straight time pay:• $_8.20_______ x ___40____= $____328.00_______• Find Zach’s overtime rate:• $__8.20_____ x _1.5_____ = $__12.30______ • Find Zach’s overtime pay: (overtime rate x overtime hours)• $_12.30_______ x _10_____ = $__123.00______• Find Zach’s Gross Pay: (straight time pay + overtime pay)• $__328.00____ + $___123.00____ = $__451.00________

Concept Check

• Complete problems 1 and 2 on page 100• PEMDAS• (9 x 40) + (9 x 1.5 x 6)= (360 + 81) = 441• (11.50 x 36) + (11.50 x 1.5 x 7) = (414 +

120.75)= 534.75

Example: Jessica is a receptionist at a hotel. She is paid $12.50 an hour for a regular 40-hour week. She gets paid

time-and-a-half for any overtime. Last week Jessica earned $612.50 in total pay. How many hours of

overtime did she work?

• Let h = the number of hours of overtime she worked. Use the formula for Total Pay.

• $612.50 = ($12.50 x 40) + [ ( $12.50 x 1.5) x h]• (Total pay) = (straight time pay) + (overtime pay)• Do the multiplication in parentheses first • $612.50 = $500 + $18.75h• Subtract $500 from each side 500.00 -$500

• $112.50 = $18.75h

• Divide both sides by $18.75 $112.50 = $18.75h• $18.75 $18.75• 6 = h• Jessica worked 6 hours of overtime this past week.

Concept Check

• Complete problem 3 on page 101

• Total Pay = (straight time pay) + (overtime pay)• Total Pay = (regular hours x regular pay) +

(*overtime rate x overtime hours worked)*Overtime rate = (regular rate x 1.5)613.60 = (11.80 x 40) + (11.80 x 1.5 x h), h = 8 hours

Guided Practice

• Problems 5, 10 on page 101• 5) 842.40• 10) 1,592.34– Closure:

• PEMDAS• Explain• (9 x 9) +3 x 4 = What is the correct answer?• 81 + 12 = 93• Homework :

Homework

• 12) 1332, 432, 1764• 16) h = 6.25 hours OT• 17) h= 4 hours OT

Review for Quiz

• Turn to page 119 in book• Complete problems 18 , 22, and 24• Show work in notes

• #24• TP = Straight Pay + Overtime Pay• TP = (Regular hours x Regular pay rate) + (Regular

Rate of Pay x 1.5 x Overtime Hours)• 948.75 = (40 x 16.50) + ( 16.50 x 1.5 x H)
