Women had taken up jobs as part of Total War practice during WWI.

Soldiers returned home to find women with many new expectations of equality.

Act of defiance against authority Women especially defied authority and

tradition by adopting new attitudes and looks—shorter hair, tighter clothes, new activities like

drinking and dancing This “new woman” of the 1920s was called a flapper

Over 350,000 African American soldiers served in segregated units during WWI.

Many saw action alongside French Units.

171 African American soldiers were awarded the French Legion of Honor

African American regiments usually traveled with a band.

This led to appreciation of culture and music of the black soldiers by French and Americans alike.
