The History of Warhill High School
As the third high school in Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, the site and the name selected for Warhill High School dates back in history to June 26, 1781, when the surrounding area was involved in a major battle during the American Revolutionary War. Warhill High School cherishes its historical past but was designed to promote a promising future for its student body.
With state-of-the-art technology in all classrooms and in numerous labs, Warhill echoes the name of the road on which it resides, Opportunity Way. With the opening this high school, the advantage of having premier technology became a source of pride.
This same pride was one of eight characteristics selected by the faculty to represent the school’s goals. Courage, honor, integrity, leadership, loyalty, persistence, pride, and strength have led students, faculty, and staff in establishing what is called “the Warhill Way.” With the colors silver, black, and Carolina blue and a lion mascot, Warhill spirit echoes throughout that there is “power in the pride.”
The Academic Robe
A historic tradition of graduation is the vestment worn by graduates and academic faculty. This distinctive academic regalia had its origin in universities during the Middle Ages when robes were worn for protection from cold temperatures in stone buildings.
The colorful hood worn by the academic faculty represents the highest attained degree, field of study, and alma mater. Bachelors wear three-foot hoods, Masters wear three and one-half foot hoods, and Doctors wear four-foot hoods. The hoods are bordered by velvet colors which designate the wearer’s field of specialization. Some representative fields of study are white for Arts and Letters, beige for Business, light blue for Education, lemon for Library Science, pink for Music, sage green for Physical Education and golden yellow for Science. Finally, the interior of the hood is lined with the colors of the institution granting the degree.

Established in 1929, the National Honor Society is one of the nation’s premier organizations established and governed by principals to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Four main purposes have guided NHS Chapters from the beginning: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools” (from the NHS Constitution). These purposes translate into the criteria used for membership selection. Warhill is proud to recognize the following senior members in the Parke Rouse, Jr. Chapter of the National Honor Society:
