ULM opened the 2016 season with its first ever matchup against Southern. •With starting quarterback Garrett Smith knocked out of the Texas State game due to injury early in the second quarter, redshirt- freshman Will Collins stepped up and tossed his first two collegiate touchdowns, both later in the second quarter, as part of a 9-for-16 passing stat line with 125 yards in the air as he led the Warhawks to the victory. •Forced to come in cold in the middle of the drive, Collins (previously just two pass attempts in his career – earlier this season at Oklahoma) tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Turner on his first pass attempt of the night to help ULM regain the lead. On the next ULM drive, Collins tossed his second touchdown, this time a 22-yarder to Kyle Nevels, on his third pass attempt of the night. •Six different Warhawks tallied rushes against Texas State, led by freshman Duke Carter’s 104 yards and Ben Luckett’s 100 yards, as part of a total 298 team rushing yards. After previously struggling on the ground, ULM has now tallied back-to-back games over 200 yards rushing following last week’s 221 yards against Idaho. •ULM tallied 73 total rushing attempts in the win, the most a Warhawk team has notched this century. The program-high mark for total team rushes in a game is 80 attempts, accomplished in the 1975 season under then-head coach Ollie Keller in ULM’s first season as a member of the NCAA. •The Warhawks’ 96 total plays on Saturday against Texas State were just eight shy of the program record of 104 (35 rush, 69 pass) set at Wake Forest in the 2013 season. •ULM converted nine third down attempts for the second week in a row following a three week stretch (at Oklahoma, at Ga. Southern, at Auburn) where it converted just 11 total third down attempts. •The Warhawks totaled 477 yards of offense on Saturday night, and now have exactly 1,000 yards of total offense over the last two weeks (523 total yards vs. Idaho). In the three prior games (at Oklahoma, at Ga. Southern, at Auburn), ULM totaled 951 combined total yards. ULM VS. NEW MEXICOULM and New Mexico will meet for the first time in program history on the gridiron when the two squads square off on Saturday night. The matchup marks the second time this season the Warhawks will play a first-ever encounter after ULM opened the season with its inaugural matchup against Southern that opened the 2016 season.

FACING OFF AFTER A LOSSULM’s game at Oklahoma on Sept. 10 marked the second consecutive season that the Warhawks faced a then-top 5 ranked team coming off of a loss...then-No. 3 Oklahoma was coming off of a 33-23 loss against Houston, while last season ULM traveled to take on Alabama on Sept. 26 a week after the second-ranked Crimson Tide fell to Ole Miss. The Warhawks dropped both games against Alabama and Oklahoma.

PICK SIX Former ULM cornerback Junior Williams intercepted Georgia Southern quarterback Kevin Ellison and returned it 56 yards to the endzone on October 3, 2015...With his interception return for a score, the Warhawks have now recorded at least one interception return for a touchdown in four consecutive seasons.

Below is a breakdown of ULM’s interception returns for touchdowns over the last four seasons: Made Final Date Opponent Player Play Score Score Sep. 29, 2012 at Tulane Darius Lively 6 yard interception return 56-3 63-10 Oct. 12, 2013 at Texas State Isaiah Newsome 71 yard interception return 7-0 21-14 Oct. 12, 2013 at Texas State Isaiah Newsome 75 yard interception return 14-0 21-14 Aug. 28, 2014 Wake Forest Mitch Lane 31 yard interception return 10-10 17-10 Oct. 3, 2015 Georgia Southern Junior Williams 56 yard interception return 24-31 31-51

STREAK ENDEDULM’s streak of defeating at least on power five team each season came to an end last year when the Warhawks fell at No. 12 Alabama on September 26, 2015... The Warhawks streak stood at three consecutive seasons after power five wins over No. 8 Arkansas (2012) and Wake Forest (2013 & 2014)... The streak was the second longest active streak among non-power five programs... ULM trailed only BYU who currently has defeated at least one power five team in 10 straight seasons.

ON THE ROADThe Warhawks have a pretty even split among their 12 total games this season with five games at home and seven on the road...Of the seven road contests, ULM will play in the Eastern Time Zone (3 times), Central Time Zone (3 times) and Mountain Time Zone (1 time). Via Google Maps the distance from JPS Field at Malone Stadium to all seven road venues comes to a total of 4,900 miles and that is just one direction -- double that amount and the round trip from ULM to each road venue comes to 9,800 miles.

The Warhawks played three-straight road games for the second consecutive season, however, this year there was a bye week tucked between the first two road trips (at Oklahoma, at Georgia Southern) and the third game (at Auburn).

BACK-TO-BACK AT HOMEAfter being one of six teams in FBS that did not play back-to-back home games last season (only Sun Belt School on the list) the Warhawks played two consecutive home games inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium when they hosted Idaho (October 8) and Texas State (October 15 / Homecom-ing).

NEW FIELDHOUSE FACILITYULM officially unveiled the new Football Fieldhouse Facility to the public on August 2. The 11,750 square foot facility, which cost $4.1 million, was funded entirely by 31 private donors. It is the first athletic facility in ULM history to be completely funded by private donations and was the first new athletic facility built at ULM since 1983.

NEW TURF, NEW NAMEThanks to a generous donation of $450,000, the largest single gift in ULM athletics history, the Warhawk football team is in year three of playing on FieldTurf Revolution... The donation from JPS Aviation/JPS Equipment Rental covered the cost of the new FieldTurf Revolution and for the donation, the name of the field will now be JPS Field at Malone Stadium... The length of the naming rights was set at a minimum of eight years... The new FieldTurf stretches wall-to-wall and totals 78,000 square feet... It is the same playing surface the Warhawks played on at Wake Forest in 2013 and other notable FBS schools that have the FieldTurf Revolution are: Louisville, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas, Texas Tech and Wisconsin... There are also 23 NFL football teams that have the FieldTurf Revolution.

GAME RECAPS: SOUTHERN & OKLAHOMA

Game One: ULM 38, Southern 21• JPS Field at Malone Stadium • Monroe, La.Sept. 3, 2016 • Attendance: 24,718POSTGAME NOTES-ULM come out and scored on its first two possessions of the second half, turning what had been a 14-12 halftime lead into a 24-12 advantage after a six-play, 44 yard drive capped by a Garrett Smith 28-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Green and a Craig Ford 24-yard field goal.-Smith hurt Southern through the air and the ground Saturday night, finishing with 208 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns while also leading the Warhawks on the ground with a 150-yard running night and a touchdown. He finished 20-for-33 in the air, with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.-He becomes the first Warhawk to rush for 150 yards since Jyruss Edwards racked up 191 yards against Middle Tennessee (Nov 12, 2011). Smith also became the first ULM quarterback to toss around 200+ yards in the air since Pete Thomas’ 307 yards passing at Georgia Southern (Nov. 29, 2014).-As a team, ULM amassed 533 offensive yards, balanced with 325 total yards on the ground and Smith’s 208 yards passing.-The Warhawks finished the night with six different players recording at least one rush, while seven players caught passes.-ULM tabbed an 11-17 mark in third down completions Saturday and was 1-for-1 in its fourth down attempt. The Warhawks cashed in on four of five redzone trips, with the only miscue coming in the opening second half possession when Smith was picked off at the goal line.-Viator is now 7-3 in season openers all-time in addition to his 10-0 mark in home openers going back to his time at McNeese State.
