Warehouse Mobile Device Portal Setting With Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 “You could not have a warehouse management system (WMS) without a handheld device!” this is what my team leader said. And he added “I don’t understand how people do warehouse management without these devices, and just use Dynamics AX 2009”. “They hire someone to build a third party application such as ScanWorkX”, I replied back. But my manager was not frustrated because we have already built, in house, our own WMS application with Dynamics AX. And it is faster and better than ScanWorkX! The “good news” is that Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 comes with a Warehouse Mobile Device Portal (WMDP) module. Warehouse Mobile Device Portal Setting With Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3

“You could not have a warehouse management system (WMS) without a handheld device!” this is what

my team leader said. And he added “I don’t understand how people do warehouse management

without these devices, and just use Dynamics AX 2009”. “They hire someone to build a third party

application such as ScanWorkX”, I replied back. But my manager was not frustrated because we have

already built, in house, our own WMS application with Dynamics AX. And it is faster and better than

ScanWorkX!

The “good news” is that Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 comes with a Warehouse Mobile Device Portal

(WMDP) module. Before I can show you how to set up this module, I have few expectations about the

WMDP module.

Expectations about the WMDP module - Communication Protocol

o RDP is the communication protocol that we are currently using. One of the advantage of

this protocol is that we have to design and develop it only once.

o Http is the protocol used by the WMSP. Using the web browser means, may be, more

coding in a different language other than X++. I don’t have that answer yet

- Availability

o Using a remote desktop protocol you have a direct access to the AOS. All transactions

are done instantly.

o If your Wi-Fi bandwidth is not excellent you might run the risk of having a very limited

access to the AOS, when you are using a web browser.

- Design flexibility

o This is where using a web browser will be big plus

- Security and Permissions

o Using the remote desktop protocol, handheld device users are strictly managed by the

Active Directory framework, I really don’t know why there are different layers of users

when it comes to the WMDP. You can even create a user on the fly with this module.

This seems to me not a very strong process.

Anyway let‘s now jump to the point.

WMDP Architecture

WMDP Infrastructure Architecture

Note: In this section, I use the blog entry from Andre A. de CALAVON of Kaya-Consulting because there is

not much to say about it here.

The mobile device communicates with the IIS server with http requests. The IIS server runs an

application which communicates with the AOS via WCF services in XML. Some configuration on e.g.

appearance is setup in AX and will be communicated to the IIS server. An example is the CSS style sheet

to be used. In this way, it is possible to have your own look and feel in the web application. Also this can

be used to support efficiently more types of devices (small screens and larger screens).

Prerequisites Before you install a Warehouse Mobile Device Portal, be sure that you have set a default warehouse

mobile device user and assigned him the role of warehouse mobile device user.

Working with the IIS The Warehouse Mobile Device Portal is basically a website. And because it is a Microsoft’s application its

web engine is IIS.

When you start the IIS manager after the installation of the WMDP, you will see the recently installed

module under the “Sites” node at your left hand side.

Select the WMDP website, here the website name is “Dynamics AX WMDP instance_04”.

In the “Actions” column at the right hand side, click on Browse : <portal port> (http) to start your

Warehouse Mobile Device Portal. Here it is Browse: 8980(http)

Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

The WMDP website will be opened into Internet Explorer.

How we get there?

Fixing the WMDP portal access issues Instead of repeating what other people did say about these issues, I will just point this section

out to the blog that resolved those issues. So, go to

http://kashperuk.blogspot.com/2014/05/walkthrough-fixing-error-incorrect.html . This blog

entry will walk you through how to fix error "Incorrect Mobile device display settings..." on the

mobile device when trying to sign in.
