TRAFFIC ROUTES & VEHICLE BEHAVIOUR

Moving or falling objects

Storage areas should be clearly marked. The layout of storage and handling areas should avoid tight corners, badly placed doors and pillars and changes in gradient.

FALLING OBJECTS

Take steps to prevent people being injured by falling objects. If areas in the warehouse are at greater risk they should be marked clearly and unauthorised personnel should not be allowed to enter.

MECHANICAL HANDLING

Mechanical Handling equipment needs to be suitable for the job and properly main-tained. Lift trucks should be regularly maintained as indicated by the manufacturer. This should be done by a competent person. You should have:

• A documented pre-shift check

• A system for reporting defects and ensuring remedial work is carried out

• A planned routine maintenance system

• A thorough safety inspection regime for each truck

Storage Systems

Ensure pallets are in good condition and empty pallets for use in the racking aren’t being struck by vehicles. Ensure the following inspection:

• Immediate reporting of damage and

defects

• Visual inspection at regular intervals

• Expert inspections carried out at

regular intervals

Safety is key to working in any Warehouse and Storage Environment. The Main causes of accidents in warehouses are:

Slips normally happen on wet or contaminated floors. Normally slips result from the spilling of water, oil, cleaning products, foodstuffs, and dry powders. Also other items such as stretch wrapping, label backing and plastic bags can cause slips. Trips normally result from uneven surfaces or objects on the floor, waste packing, banded strapping loops and pallets are often the cause of trips.

WORKING AT HEIGHT

All working at height needs to be planned and properly supervised and carried out. The selection of the correct equipment is key. Stepladders and ladders often cause injury. They should be used when the task is low risk and of short duration. Never climb on racking or shelving. Ensure appropriate training for use of all access equipment.

Vehicles In and Around the Warehouse

Visiting drivers should be given advanced booking slots to ensure their own safety and that of others. Think about how you communicate with drivers who have limited English. You may find it better to use pictures and flow charts.

MANAGING DELIVERIES & VISITORS

Consider the complete separation of vehicles and pedestrians. If this separation is not possible ensure suitable control measures are employed.
