Graduates: It's finally here - the day toward which all your hard

work has been directed since you first entered Ohio State ATI. And while it may not seem like it today as we celebrate the culmination of your academic career here, remember that commencement is not the end, but the beginning.

From here, you move forward into a new phase of your life. Many of you leave here today with offers of employment in hand or with plans to complete a bachelor's degree. Others of you have an array of options before you and important decisions to make.

Regardless of what your next steps may be, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect upon all you've achieved at Ohio State ATI. You've mastered new skills and knowledge, acquired technical expertise, developed confidence, and tackled new challenges almost every day. In other words, you are indeed wellequipped for whatever lies ahead.

Today, you become one of more than 5,500 ATI alumni. There will be many heartfelt farewells today as you prepare to move on, but you will no doubt stay connected to ATI through the lasting friendships you have formed with fellow students, faculty, and staff. We will always consider you part of the ATI family. We're proud of your accomplishments and hope you will always be proud of your Ohio State ATI degree.

We wish you every success. Congratulations on your achievement. \

s. J~tt Stephen G. P. Nameth Director, Ohio State ATI

cademic RegaliaThe pageantry and dress of the academic procession have been

inherited from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

The principle features of academic dress are the gown, the cap, and the hood. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895. In 1932, the American Council of Education presented a revised code, which, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today.

The Gown: The flowing gown comes from the twelfth century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the cold of unheated buildings, today it has become symbolic of the democracy of scholar hip, for it covers any dress or rank of social standing underneath.

It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the associate and bachelor's degree; long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master's degree; and full double bell sleeves for the doctor's degree. Associate, bachelor's and master's degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctor's degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves, the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.

The Cap: When Roman law freed a slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. Maize, the color of Ohio State ATI graduates' tassels, denotes agriculture.

The Hood: The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree. The color of the lining designates the institution from which the degree was granted.

Koehler Photography will mail a free color proof to each graduate, along with information regarding ordering pictures.

This program is not an official graduation list.
