THE WARBURG INSTITUTE was founded as a centre for the study of the humanities. Its researches are particularly directed to the survival of classical elements in the European history of Religion, Social Life, Fine Arts, Science and Literature.

In accordance with this general topic the Journal takes for its province the study of Humanism in its widest sense. It seeks to explore the working of symbols-the signs and images created by ancient, and employed by modern generations, as instruments both of enlightenment and of superstition.
