The Warwick MBA 2010part-time

Page 2: War Wick

Having worked in industry for eight years I was aware of the phenomenal reputation WBS has, both within my company and across business as a whole. It seemed as though everyone operating at the most senior levels had the Warwick MBA. I wanted to be part of that exclusive group.

There is a real buzz around WBS, the teaching is dynamic and encourages team work; much of the learning happens within groups. I built up a wonderful network of people and came in contact with a diversity of cultures that would have taken years to cultivate otherwise. Most importantly, I left with a whole new circle of life-long friends.

The Warwick MBA gives you options; it formally recognises your capabilities, with a qualification that is undisputed within industry, and helps you develop a business network that will follow you for the rest of your career.

Ross Ritchie MBA (Warwick) Strategic Change Manager, E.ON IS

Create your future: achieve your dreams

When I started the Warwick MBA I was a Project Manager in a FTSE 100 bank. By the time I finished, I had been promoted and am now CEO of one of the bank’s subsidiaries. There is no doubt that the Warwick MBA has helped to equip me for this role.

Alison McFadyen MBA (Warwick) Chief Executive Officer Standard Chartered

WBS was attractive for several reasons. Not least, its accreditation means it’s very well known and respected, particularly for distance learning, but it was the flexibility of this study mode that clinched it. I did all my study outside working hours; there were opportunities to use the modular and online modes for elective modules; and there was also the possibility to finish the programme off by full-time study. I knew I could manage my work and family commitments within those parameters.

George Kostakis MBA (Warwick) Expert – Study visits, Area Enhanced Cooperation in VET and LLL, CEDEFOP

The Warwick MBA is a qualification with many uses. Perhaps you’re looking for a career boost or to change direction, or maybe you just want to step out of your specialism and into general management.

Join WBS and connect with a network of highly experienced professionals. Our committed and internationally recognised experts will help you apply your knowledge to the workplace immediately, wherever you are.

With WBS you can mix and match your studies using residential, online, and distance learning, making studying as accessible as you need. Very few schools can beat our combination of high-quality teaching and maximum flexibility.

You determine where you want the Warwick MBA to take you and we’ll support you all the way.

WBS is in the top one percent of business schools in the world

There are only a very few business schools in the world with accreditation from all three major international management education bodies, and we were the first in the UK.

h AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (USA)

h European Foundation for Management Development (Europe)

h The Association of MBAs (UK).

The 2008 Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA survey ranked the Warwick MBA by distance learning 3rd in the world, and 1st in the UK.

The Financial Times ranks the Warwick Executive MBA among the top 30 in the world.

A qualification from WBS really means something, to you and your employers.

It is no surprise that the high regard in which WBS is held by the international business community has translated into being recognised as a UK Business Superbrand. It is a brand that continues to gain momentum and every year is a more compelling challenger to its often older and more established rivals. As the most improved brand in its category, jumping almost 100 places in the 2008/9 rankings, it is clear that its influence on both experts and business professionals alike is growing.

Stephen Cheliotis Chief Executive The Centre for Brand Analysis Chair, UK Superbrands & CoolBrands Councils

WBS students and faculty are of a very high quality. The Association wishes to commend WBS on the quality of its staff and its innovative teaching methods; the staff enjoy high levels of motivation and this is reflected in the positivity of students. WBS should be commended for demonstrating great flexibility in bringing together all the strands of the Warwick MBA programme.

The Association of MBAs

EFMD

WBS experts are consulted by the business leaders and bluechips that shape the global economy; they are respected around the world. You know they will ground the academic theory in the reality of the workplace so your learning is ready to use in a practical way.

Studying with our experts, who write the textbooks from which other schools teach, will give you direct access to the latest theories and practice.

There’s nothing as stimulating as working with really knowledgeable people, and between the tutors and your peers you’ll be challenged and inspired.

As a dynamic organisation, we believe it is not enough just to do what we do well. Warwick and WBS have a long tradition of innovation, and we are constantly working to add further value to the Warwick MBA.

We always welcome suggestions from current participants, alumni, and organisations on how we can continue to enhance the Warwick MBA. Intelligent use of technology, extended content, and expanded opportunities to participate in overseas modules are just some of the exciting new developments coming up in 2010/11.

WBS offers a very practical schedule for those who have a full-time job, and especially those who have to come from abroad. A good education is key for success and staying on top; the Warwick MBA is very demanding, but it’s opening a new chapter in my career.

rs WBS gave me the flexibility to go at my own pace. Having not studied for a long time I was nervous, but WBS really moves mountains to support you; they genuinely want you to succeed.

The consistent quality of the teaching and materials keeps you going and, although it’s a mental stretch when you’re working hard during the day too, it’s honestly an exhilarating experience.

Graduation was fantastic, my four girls and wife saw me receive my degree, and I just thought that my children couldn’t have had a better example set for them. Work hard with the right support and anything’s possible…

Leadership involves embracing challenges and inspiring change, in others and yourself. You need to know your strengths and weaknesses, and be able to judge, enthuse, and encourage others.

We’ll sharpen your critical thinking and problem solving skills, your people management capabilities, and help you develop into a visionary leader.

No one’s saying it will be easy. Our study programme is intense; even the most able participants will be challenged. But we don’t just quench your thirst for knowledge, we inspire the stamina you’ll need to reach your potential. However hard it gets, we will be there to support you.

International perspectiveBusiness leaders have to take a global perspective; events on the other side of the world can have a massive impact locally. Over 40 percent of our teaching academics are international, as are 31 percent of the Warwick Executive MBA participants and 63 percent of our distance learners. Much of our research is internationally focused.

Become part of a global network of spirited and interesting people. Across the Warwick MBA community in its entirety we have nearly 2,000 participants from over 100 countries, all networking to support each other. The friendships you will forge through the shared experience of learning at WBS, in person and online, will last a lifetime.

Inspiring & rewarding The sheer diversity of the Warwick MBA cohort is staggering, as is the vast wealth of industries that are assembled in one room. The people who study at WBS are very high calibre and the atmosphere is therefore extremely stimulating and alive.

My previous studies were very practically based within the confines of one industry and had left what I perceived to be gaps in my knowledge. WBS addressed my concerns about my less academic background very sympathetically and I felt encouraged by the genuine reassurances I was given. I felt sure from an early stage that WBS would be an inspiring, rather than intimidating, place in which to study.

I’ve begun a new job since starting my studies and my new employer has agreed to pay 100 percent of the fees. WBS has opened my mind to the possibilities that are out there for me. My new role is in a completely new industry and I probably would not have had the courage or the audacity to apply for my current position, were it not for my achievements here.

WBS has exceeded all my expectations and given me so much more than a mere qualification.

Phil Watters current participant on the Warwick Executive MBA Bid Director, Hampson Aerospace Services Ltd

Studying for the Warwick MBA, I definitely feel more prepared for unfamiliar business situations and challenges and more confident in taking them on. There is a sense of intensive collaboration and involvement which is key to the programme; in fact, the other participants are what make the Warwick MBA special.

We recommend three years to complete the study programme on a part-time basis. Making time for study, work, family, and friends is not easy, but life is for living. People like you want to fit a lot in, and we want your studies with us to be an enjoyable time of your life. We have designed our part-time study programme to be completely flexible so you can take it at your own pace, planning for, and adapting to, your own circumstances.

You can tailor our programme to your needs, finding the best route for you through to graduation.

You could use our flexibility to reduce the time it takes to complete your studies.

On the Warwick Executive MBA, you can often speed up your studies through careful selection of elective modules and an early start to your project.

Studying the Warwick MBA by distance learning, you can complete the programme more swiftly by taking some or all of your elective modules face to face in five-day residential blocks.

We know that circumstances sometimes change for the worse too. Situations can seem insurmountable, but we’re here to help you achieve your aims and sometimes taking longer to complete your studies might be the best way to get what you want in the long term. Talk to us about how flexibility can work for you.

Mixing study modesMost part-time MBAs lock you in to a study programme for the duration. The Warwick MBA lets you mix and match.

h The Warwick Executive MBA splits the teaching into five-day residential blocks. You could study your core modules like this, but later choose online or distance learning electives if the module dates don’t suit you.

h Do your core modules by distance learning, but take some electives as five-day blocks on campus.

h Once you’ve completed your core modules, join us for a term at WBS to complete all your electives as a full-time participant.

h Join us on a full-time basis for the September to December term for five core modules, then complete the remainder of your core and your elective modules through distance learning and/or study through five-day blocks.

Flexible Although I’m studying ‘by distance learning’, I’ve used three different study modes. During five-day residential modules in Strategic Brand Management and Marketing Communications I mixed with participants from other study modes and, for a week, felt like a full-time student again! The modules themselves significantly changed my attitude towards marketing and advertising, so much so that I moved into it.

The online module in International Marketing was exceptional. Online collaboration is a part of my everyday life, and I’m immediately using the new methods of organisation I’ve learned.

Natalia Bogush current participant on the Warwick MBA by distance learning PartyGaming Plc

While I was attracted by the high ranking of WBS, it was the ability to switch between study modes and the general flexibility the Warwick MBA offered that hooked me. I was with the US military, and moved around a lot, but I was even able to do my application and get my acceptance in SE Afghanistan between missions.

I loved the programme’s flexibility – how I could take modules both in person and at a distance. It’s been brilliant.

J Mike Montoya MBA (Warwick) Department of Justice, USA

WBS is one of the top business schools offering an MBA by distance learning; it’s not differentiated from the other study modes, including full-time, and it’s flexible so you can switch between modes.

I’m impressed by the overall high quality of fellow participants, and by the diversity in backgrounds in terms of company, job, culture, and country.

The Warwick MBA probably will widen my career opportunities, but in addition it has challenged the way I think, providing me with better analytical skills and a wider skillset in general.

I was looking for a world-class business programme I could pursue while still working in the field I’m passionate about, humanitarian aid. The Warwick MBA’s flexible programme was perfect.

I took three months’ leave and studied full-time for the first term then went back to work and did some distance learning. Then I went back to WBS full-time, which gave me another chance to meet and network with a new widely diversified cohort. An elective in Mannheim, Germany, was the icing on the cake; an unforgettable experience. Having three months’ break between exams in December and the summer term was also a good opportunity to get an early start to my project, sponsored by BREPAL.

It’s been great to mix the study modes in this way.

W wbs.ac.uk/careers

At WBS we don’t produce a ‘standard’ graduate from the Warwick MBA. Our participants are individuals with their own distinct aspirations, which we help them attain.

Many of our participants are looking to move into general management from a specialised field; others are looking for the opportunity to move into senior management and boost their career with their current employer. Some will be preparing to start their own company.

Throughout the study programme we’ll help you work out what you want to do with your new skills, and give you opportunities to try new experiences.

You can be sure that your reputation as a quality graduate will precede you.

My company were very supportive from the outset by agreeing to sponsor me and keen to help me use my new skills, so much so that they created the role of Operations Efficiency Manager especially for me. As a result I have taken on new responsibilities and regularly get involved in core projects and business initiatives of all kinds.

Studying for the Warwick MBA has helped make me a more diverse manager and increased my skill sets enormously, enabling me to get out of my ‘finance’ pigeonhole and develop professionally.

The greatest strength of part-time study is that you are able to apply your new knowledge immediately to your work. It also makes the theory accessible and relevant as you, or someone in your group, may have a real-time problem to which it can be applied. Gaining this new knowledge will give you the confidence to take on new challenges and will give your employer reason to believe that you will meet them.

Forward-thinking employers recognise that releasing their employees to part-time study commitments will help their organisation grow and succeed. In 2008/9, 22 percent of participants on the Warwick MBA by distance learning were at least partially funded by their employer. For participants on the Warwick Executive MBA, this figure rose to 73 percent.

You & your employer

Benefits to your employerYour employer will benefit from supporting your studies because your new ideas and fresh thinking will have an immediate and positive impact.

You will be more effective at work, generating new ideas and using proven tools, ideas, and best practice to resolve business issues. You will be addressing current work issues in the class environment and as part of the assessed study programme.

You will also undertake an internal consulting project focusing on solving real problems facing your organisation. Just one innovative idea could pay for the entire programme.

Our Guide for corporate sponsors will help you take an employer’s perspective.

Working in partnershipThe company benefits because it allowed me to mix with people from different industries and develop a much broader outlook. Whilst working toward the Warwick MBA I was able to take a step back from the organisation and look in from the outside.

Through studying alongside colleagues from around the world, I have learned so much more about other cultures and business practices. The programme has enabled me to gain a greater insight into the specifics of different functions within the company that I had limited previous experience of. Being given the opportunity to study other business management techniques and compare them to our practices is beginning to pay off.

Within twelve months of achieving the Warwick MBA, our company was acquired. An MBA was mandatory for inclusion in the Global Product Growth Team and I was promoted to Global Product Sales and Marketing Manager four months after acquisition.

Mike Smith MBA (Warwick) Global Product Sales & Marketing Manager, Eaton

The Warwick MBA enables managers to develop a structured approach to business. This is absolutely necessary for the smooth running of a multinational company such as Eaton. A huge advantage is that managers learn techniques that can be immediately applied back into the workplace, such as the logical analysis of relevant data. This skill leads to better decision making, which can generate higher profitability for shareholders, greater engagement by employees and improved service for customers.

The programme expands a manager’s experience, allowing them to learn, practice and master the skills required to innovate and manage innovation in others. It brings fresh ideas into the organisation and equips the graduate with the tools that will enable them and our company to fulfil true potential.

Astrid Mozes Vice President & General Manager, Eaton

How your employer can help youThe Warwick MBA is a significant investment for you and your employer, both in financial terms and in the time needed to devote to study. You may need to ask for support from your employer in the following areas:

h Finance helping pay your tuition fees, travel, or other expenses

h Time giving you enough time away from work to study

h Development offering opportunities at work to implement your learning.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like help preparing a case to put to your employer; we’re here to help.

The Warwick MBA is good value for money; my company funded my degree, and I have pledged to give them at least two years after I graduate. I think they’re benefiting already; I’ve got a renewed perspective on my job, and a greater understanding of different business disciplines.

It has been possible – but not always easy! – to hold down a full-time job, work away from home, have a family, and maintain a social life throughout the programme thanks to the versatility of the distance learning mode.

Having the opportunity to interact with fellow participants from different cultures and life experiences definitely enriched my studies. The study groups and my.wbs have been invaluable.

Our study programme

Syndicate groupsWe believe the management skills and business experience that you and other participants bring to the programme are a crucial contribution to your learning. We carefully construct syndicate groups to ensure a balance across different cultures, functions, and industry sectors which allows you to share the differing practical experiences of everyone during group work. Group work also allows you to raise problems, clarify ideas, and discuss issues in a sociable environment – perfect for building and maintaining that all-important global and local network.

The majority of our distance learners join a virtual study group which convenes online in a private web space, usually for discussion, live chat, and resource sharing. They usually work using a mix of pre-arranged ‘meetings’ and rolling topical ‘forum-style’ conversations. Local study groups are sometimes available, and are a great source of support and motivation.

Our graduates often cite group work as both the most challenging and rewarding part of their studies. Often it’s the element that feeds straight back into the workplace as people learn from others and perfect their own management style.

Elective modules onlineExperience of working in a virtual team is a really useful transferable skill to be able to offer immediately. Online learning is also an exciting way to complete a module, and a fascinating experience. You need to ensure you can all convene online regularly, wherever you are in the world, and you will communicate and share your learning in a multicultural environment.

We currently offer two elective modules entirely online, International Marketing and Project Management, where the focus is on international teamwork. Choose these and you will be in a small group of participants from around the world, and the output from the group will form the assessment along with an individual written assignment.

Elective modulesThese allow you to follow your interests, specialise, and expand your network.

The WBS ForumA key part of the Warwick experience is sharing with others. The WBS Forum series is a distillation of everything we believe: the best education resides at the intersection between academia and practice.

The series features senior executives discussing various topics including their own management experiences, firms, or business contexts in which they have worked, and more general events or issues relevant to management studies and the business world. MBAs are becoming more prevalent, but often the only indicator of quality is the name of the school. The Warwick MBA is all about challenging preconceived ideas about business and looking at familiar problems from new angles; it’s also about encouraging us to step out of our comfort zones to develop as more rounded managers. The WBS brand is strong and well respected. I now feel more confident in discussions with senior managers and the letters after my name are a subtle but powerful signal that I can contribute valuable input.

Having been offered the chance to be sponsored by Barclays to undertake an MBA, the first step was choosing the right school. For me the choice was a relatively easy one; its first class reputation coupled with the modular study mode meant that in the end the decision to choose WBS was simple.

My dissertation gave me the opportunity to revisit a large scale cultural change programme that I had led within Barclays five years earlier and to conduct a study into its long-term impact. It involved employees at all levels, from the Group Chief Executive downwards, and also allowed me to reflect on the organisational changes during the period through a number of fresh perspectives gained during my studies.

The Warwick MBA programme is stretching, but a disciplined approach combined with the high quality teaching and the flexibility of WBS made it achievable. I graduated on time, and with a Distinction.

Russell Powles MBA (Warwick) Director, Operations & Risk Barclays Local Business Banking

Your consultancy project

Your consultancy project is a vital part of the study programme; it is the culmination of everything you have learned during your studies. It will show you can integrate your learning from the discrete modules into a cohesive whole, taking multiple perspectives on a business issue. You will have the opportunity to join a project workshop prior to starting it, to ensure you get off to a good start.

Your project might also be the incentive you can use to encourage your employer to sponsor you. The promise of the quality of focus and expertise which will be brought to the endeavour can be a powerful motivator.

There are normally two outputs:

h A management report for the organisation

h An academic dissertation, demonstrating your understanding and logical application of relevant concepts.

Recent projectsh A review of the application

of Lean Manufacturing Techniques within the steel industry

h A strategic analysis of oil and gas company exploration growth opportunities in Africa

h An examination of four adjacent opportunities to the 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division

h Application of the service profit chain in the B2B sector

h Attracting talent: Engineering a more strategic recruitment marketing approach for McKinsey’s Production Systems Design Centre

h Balanced scorecard: Application and pre-requisites for successful implementation

h Barriers to growth in the US residential solar industry: A case study in the state of Maryland

h Damascus: A city branding exercise

h Drivers of value in the aerospace aftermarket supply chain

h International market entry: A review of the methods and approaches of the internationalisation of UK law firms.

h Knowledge management: Fact or fiction?

h Managing innovation in a small construction firm: A case study

h Multiple scenario analysis: Possible futures for the Dubai real estate industry

h Predictability of stock market returns

h Relationship management in information technology outsourcing

h Risk and cost in the value chain: Reducing strategic uncertainty in fuel energy distribution

h Service quality to compete in an increasingly competitive market

h Strategic success factors for companies in fast growth markets: The case of North Carolina’s biofuels industry

h Technology as a competitive advantage in emerging country call centres

h What it’s really like starting a business: A case study in the entrepreneurship of a high growth promising start-up

h Women’s enterprise and access to finance. What exactly is the problem?

I had very strict criteria for choosing a business school. It had to be triple accredited with a high international ranking; it must have a mature and diverse multicultural and multi-organisational cohort, and the content should be of high quality with good teaching ratios, but at a reasonable price.

It also had to be flexible to accommodate my current job, adaptable in order to respond to possible changes in my personal situation, extendable if necessary, and offer exchange modules at partner universities. I compared MBA offerings from Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. WBS scored the highest, meeting even my tight brief!

I came to a career in business later than most; I wanted to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, and satisfy my intellectual curiosity. For me, the Warwick MBA offered the best combination of value for money, academic excellence, and diversity of backgrounds. There are few MBA programmes in the UK that provide such high-quality executive education within a larger university environment.

The flexibility offered by WBS has really helped me balance study, work, and home life; my daughter was born during a module, and I also took a more senior position with global responsibility in another company. Taking the Warwick MBA was a key factor in getting my new job, and my new employer is contributing sponsorship. I can, and do, recommend WBS.

Page 19: War Wick

The Warwick Executive MBA sees you attend WBS at regular intervals, for a week at a time, to study a particular subject in depth.

This route combines the flexibility of part-time study with the benefits of interactive learning and is perfect if you want to plan well ahead. It’s particularly suitable if your work involves a considerable amount of travelling, you are based overseas, or you are just really busy and need to schedule well in advance. It minimises disruption to both professional and personal commitments by getting all the teaching done in discrete residential blocks.

It’s an immersive method of study using practice-oriented assessment; you’ll not only use case studies, but also reflect on your own organisation and those of the other participants. Plus, you take your learning back into the workplace – immediately and practically.

w warwickmba.com/go/exec

Face-to-face tuition is supplemented by extensive pre-module reading, and post-module assignments. There is also a compulsory pre-module induction weekend during which you will get to know the study programme, campus, and your fellow participants. It will give you a chance to consider and gain insight into your own qualities, abilities, and learning styles, and is an ideal opportunity to review your personal learning objectives and reflect on your aspirations.

Each module is self-contained and assessment is a combination of syndicate group work and written assignments. Two modules are assessed by examination.

Most participants complete the programme in three years but it is possible to complete it in just over two if you are able to devote more time to study.

The Warwick Executive MBA I undertook an MBA to add a stronger conceptual element to my experiential learning. I had spoken to a number of colleagues who had completed or were completing MBAs and the feedback for WBS was very positive. In particular, there was a perception that WBS participants had more experience across a wide range of industries and locations before starting their MBA than elsewhere. This, combined with the opportunity to study through residential modules, made up my mind.

Subsequent to starting the Warwick MBA I received a promotion and then moved sideways from an operational to a strategic role. I have no doubt my studies played a part in both these. Not because I was ‘doing an MBA’ but because the ideas I was exposed to through the content and networking gave me opportunities to add value back into Nationwide that helped to increase my visibility in the organisation.

This is partly through a better ability to reframe situations and partly from an improved ability to understand and communicate with more of the organisational functions such as finance and marketing.

Colin Rice current participant on the Warwick Executive MBA Head of Business Transformation, Member Account Administration Division, Nationwide

In a normal day, we would receive lectures and short syndicate activities from 9am–6pm and then would usually spend each evening working on the syndicate project for the week. The syndicate work can be quite tough in the early modules, but once you get more confident in your abilities and the quality of your output, it becomes easier to turn out good quality work within the limited time available.

Although the workload on each module differs, on most days there was usually enough time for some networking in the bar at the end of the day, which was a great way to wind down. I also found there was normally sufficient time in the morning before the start of lectures to be able to go for a run or spend an hour doing work emails/phone calls, so I could stay on top of any high-priority issues back at the office.

I couldn’t afford to be away from family and work so distance learning fits perfectly for me. It gives me an academic education in business while allowing me to continue working and being with my family. The flexible programme offers an amazingly broad range of possibilities.

I’ve completed some face-to-face modules; Strategic Brand Management was exceptionally well taught and inspirational. Being on campus for the September seminars is always a great experience, both academically and socially.

I quickly realised that WBS leads in many fields internationally. There’s absolutely no negative discrimination between distance learning and full-time study. I loved the annual September Seminar, bringing together high achievers from all over the world.

wbsLive is an innovative method of delivering lectures over the internet; I could not only watch and listen live but also ask questions and benefit from feedback from the lecturer and my peers. We could even have group discussions which proved to be very helpful, and if you miss the session you can go back and watch the archived session which is great! I think it is a wonderful experience and recommend it.

Ahmad Bhatti Technical Services Consultant, Epic Data Ltd

wbsLive has definitely provided a bridge to the rest of my colleagues. The real-time interactions juiced up the case study discussions and my overall learning experience, and the feeling of being part of a live discussion, and just knowing that there are others who have encountered similar problems juggling work, family, and study has given me a real boost.

Loretta Lau Project Manager, UBS AG

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA survey ranked the Warwick MBA by distance learning 3rd in the world, and 1st in the UK. With over 20 years of experience to draw upon, we use a variety of delivery methods to give you the highest quality tuition with the luxury of working at your own speed in your own time.

Excellent print-based study materials, written by our expert faculty, are provided for all our modules. We also use online resources, virtual classrooms, and local and virtual study groups so that your location is never an issue.

You can chose to start your studies in either January or July each year. July entry gives you a nice gentle route in, ideal if you have been away from study for a while as you have an extra six months to complete your first five modules. Choose the January intake and be prepared for a more intense learning experience to complete your studies a bit more quickly.

Study commitmentTypically, you’ll spend 10–15 hours a week studying at your own pace using our high quality printed materials to support your study of the textbooks, including notes, case studies, and supplementary reading. You will also be allocated a tutor for each subject and you are encouraged to submit regular Tutor Marked Assignments for feedback and review.

AssessmentWe use a variety of assessment methods. For instance, of the first five core modules, three are assessed by three-hour examinations, which can be taken locally to you, whilst the other two are assessed purely by written assignment.

The September SeminarOur September Seminar happens towards the end of each year of the programme; it’s a fantastic chance to invigorate your studies. It’s a real highlight for most distance learners: a chance to meet up, refresh old friendships and build new contacts.

At this compulsory event you will spend eight days with us and your fellow participants at WBS. Attend special seminars and workshops, chat with the faculty, and immerse yourself in the Warwick experience. Live like a full-time student, working hard but playing hard. You’ll come away inspired and motivated.

Part of my job in working for the British Council in Japan is helping prospective students choose the right study options in the UK so I was confident that WBS was the perfect choice for me. The Warwick MBA has an excellent international reputation and its distance learning study mode is given equal status with the full-time mode.

The study programme covers both domestic and international issues; the modules are structured to allow for the study of global business in a very practical way. There is also a choice of study modes; I have attended modules in Hong Kong, Dubai, Brussels, and WBS, and at each I have met people from a variety of backgrounds. While the quality of teaching is crucial, the opportunity to come into contact and work intimately with so many people from different backgrounds, and with different cultural viewpoints, is something unique to the Warwick MBA.

I chose the Warwick MBA because it’s one of the top business schools worldwide; what matters is not whether you have an MBA, but which MBA you have.

My background as an accountant is fairly specialised and I wanted to broaden my knowledge of other areas of business. Any senior management position requires cross-functional expertise and the Warwick MBA gives an excellent grounding for this.

Every country and every market works differently, globalisation will never take that away, and the international focus of the Warwick MBA brings together ideas from those diverse markets and cultures.

Accommodation & facilities on campusAll our part-time participants will spend some time on the beautiful University of Warwick campus. It’s a great place to get away from the rat race. The green spaces make for a relaxing environment while being close to Coventry, Birmingham, Warwick, and Stratford gives you access to contemporary urban life.

On campus, we have excellent accommodation with different options available depending on when you are here. If you are taking a five-day module and would like to stay on campus, there is conference-style accommodation just two minutes away from WBS. If you are a distance learner, here for the September seminar, you can choose from a variety of options including en-suite rooms or shared self-catering flats; all rooms have broadband access.

One of the great things about the Warwick MBA is that people are from a whole range of backgrounds; there’s always a lot of debate and interaction.

My time at WBS has led to a valuable qualification, a network of friends, some memorable experiences, and a much broader understanding of business. I work almost exclusively with accountants, but through the Warwick MBA I have worked with people in a whole range of careers. This has given me a wider understanding of the world around me.

Fees & scholarshipsThe Warwick MBA is a prestigious qualification; our graduates carry real weight and authority in the real world.

Fees are subject to confirmation and do not include travel, accommodation, or other living expenses. You are charged a tuition fee at the start of each year you study. Fees for 2010–11 entry will be announced by February 2010. The fees shown here are for guidance only.

Fees are reviewed each year, so you should budget for a small increase each time. In recent years, this has been between three and eight percent.

Some participants are financially supported in some way by their employer. We are very happy to help you put together a case to support this.

If you are funding your studies yourself, you can arrange to pay your annual fee in four equal instalments.

If you extend your studies you will have to budget for a continuation fee for each extra year of study. Additional fees also apply for distance learners taking face-to-face modules, and all part-time participants who want tailored careers support.

All successful applicants will be automatically considered for one of a small number of WBS Scholarships. These can be for up to 100 percent of the first year’s fees for self-funded participants.
