Continuing with the gritty industrial dockside theme of phase one, two further buildings, to be called Abel Yard and Hope Quay, will be focused on the historic Gaol Gate. This will provide a new entrance to Wapping Wharf, opening onto a small square and flanked by garden areas. The two new buildings will continue the steeply pitched roof profile of phase one, now with natural slate, and the walls will be timber boarding over a rugged stone plinth. Main entrances to the apartments will mainly be on the new street connecting to Gaol Ferry Steps alongside four more retail units.

Roof level apartments will have vaulted ceilings and generous terraces. Many will have balconies and some will benefit from the views to the waterways north and south, whilst others will overlook the residents’ landscaped courtyards. The elevations facing south will have a more formal character, using white render with glass and zinc bay windows, in deference to the Victorian villas along Cumberland Road.

The phase two buildings are at the centre of the Wapping Wharf master plan. The architectural character was influenced by long sawmill buildings. Some of the timber will be ship-lap and stained black, to distinguish significant parts of the composition, such as the ‘black tower’ which is surmounted by a copper coloured rainscreen two storey penthouse.

As with phase one, the new buildings are laid out to follow the alignment of the old gaol walls and these will be restored to provide a plinth to the south facing elevations. A public art installation will trace the now lost centre of the gaol in the hard landscaping.
