VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

It’s time for the final phase of our VTK Finance Tab rollout! We are providing you with the final steps needed to submit your annual Troop Finance Report. Hopefully you have been entering your troop’s finance activity into the VTK Finance Report form and have seen how user-friendly this tool is! • The VTK Troop Finance Report must be submitted between May 1 and June 1. You are welcome to

enter information at any time, but do not “Submit” prior to May 1.• In order to complete the Troop Finance Report, you must have an electronic copy of your most

current bank statement to attach to the report. You may already receive electronic copies from the bank, or you may scan a copy, or even take a photo of the report.

• Learn everything you need to know with the recorded Troop Finance Report Training: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4236181196739668993

Please contact your Service Unit Finance Consultant if you need support.

To encourage our volunteers with this new resource, we will be doing a drawing for 5 x $25 GSWNY gift certificates for all leaders who submit a complete Troop Finance Report by the June 1, 2018 deadline!

GIRL EXPERIENCE

CLICK TO REGISTER.

ANNUAL TROOP FINANCE REPORT SUBMISSION: May 1 – June 1

At Girl Scouts, we care about your experience, good or bad, and we want to hear from you!

In April, Girl Scouts of the USA will be conducting a national survey with girls, parents/guardians, and troop leaders called Girl Scout Voices Count to find out what’s working, and what’s not, in Girl Scouts. We will use your feedback to improve our services and programs.

The surveys open on April 4. Save the date and be sure to check your email for the invitation to participate.

As a Thank You, everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a raffle to win one of twenty $50 gift cards! We can’t wait for you to make your voice count!

Brownie Home Scientist Badge By paying careful attention during experiments, scientists learn new things—even if they've done the test before. That means you don't have to grow up to be a scientist. You're a scientist every time you do an experiment! In this badge, find out where science has been hiding in your own home.

1. Be a kitchen chemist – learn about chemistry, states of matter – and how these things can change all while cooking a yummy treat!

2. Create static electricity – learn about teeny tiny particles called electrons, how they move, and how it causes crazy things to happen!

3. Dive into density – learn all about why things sink and float! 4. Make something bubble up – you’re making chemical reactions with carbon dioxide!5. Play with science

"When I've earned this badge, I'll be able to see the science all around me."

Flash Facts • Although women fill close to half of all jobs in the US economy, they hold less than 25% of STEM jobs • Women with STEM jobs earn 33% more than women with non-STEM jobs!

STEM Activity of the Month: Engineer a Rain Gauge!• Combine citizen science and engineering for this month’s STEM activity. The

saying goes April showers bring May flowers because April is traditionally a very, very rainy month!

• To Make a Rain Gauge, you’ll need a soda bottle, stones, tape, a ruler, and a marker. To start, cut the top off of a soda bottle, then place stones in the bottom of the bottle. Tape the top part of the soda bottle upside down and tape it to the bottle. Using a ruler, mark a scale on the bottle. Now, pour water into the bottle until it reaches the bottom strip on the scale you just made.

• Now, put your rain gauge outside where it can collect water during the rain showers. After each rainy day, check your rain gauge. Measure how much rain water was collected (in inches!). This is your quantitative (or number) Make observations about the rain storms, as well, for qualitative (or detail) data. Was it long and light or short and heavy? Was there thunder and lightning? These observations can all be recorded in your citizen science notebook!

APRIL SPECIAL PROMOTIONS: For the Week of April 16-20 - In honor of our wonderful volunteers and leaders – all bags and totes are 20% off for the entire week.

GIRL SCOUT LEADER’S DAY, APRIL 22: Every day, Girl Scout volunteers make it possible for girls across the country to enjoy and benefit from an adventure-having, skill-building, lead-taking, life-changing good time. It’s undeniable: without our volunteers’ commitment to unleashing the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ in every girl, we couldn’t and wouldn’t be the largest girls’ leadership organization in the world. But we are. Thanks to them. And we love them for it. We encourage everyone to find a special way to thank their adult Girl Scout Volunteers.

EARTH DAY, APRIL 22: Through Girl Scouting, girls see the Earth as their home. Whether they're learning about endangered wildlife, developing creative recycling projects, or working toward a grade-level award, girls focus on care, conservation, and responsibility. They make sure the beauty and wonder of our planet endure for future generations to enjoy. Earth Day has been bringing communities and organizations together to advocate for a healthier environment and a sustainable life. The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life to share their concerns about each citizen’s critical role in the environment.

There are many fun patches for these special days. Selection varies for each shop.
