ATTENTION TEACHERS: The LMUSD 4th Annual Summer Institute will be held August 7-11th. We’ve expanded our topics this year and will have 10 strands to meet the needs and interests of our teachers. There will be several technology classes and also math, science, and literacy. One class will give teachers ideas of how to create a Makerspace in their classroom to spark students’ innovative thinking. New this year...the special education department is offering several classes including incorporating technology skills to support student learning. Teachers attending Summer Institute have the option of pay without salary credit or pay with salary credit at a reduced hourly rate. What have we accomplished this year? A look at what we set out to do is the best way to frame that. In the area of student achievement we determined to have our students improving in ELA and elementary mathematics; our graduation rate is 94.9%; and we are expanding our number of CTE pathways. Our school climate continues to be a work in progress and with the additional counseling hours we have been able to reach out to more kids than ever before! Together, we passed Measure I and are becoming increasingly Future Ready - with our facilities and our technology. In the fall, every classroom will have access to wifi! We have a Board adopted Technology Plan that many of you contributed to. is plan will guide us in our future as we push forward in using tech as a tool in our classrooms. All in all we are working together to be an organization of deliberate excellence. I am thankful for each of you who has committed to making Lucia Mar be the place where you would want your own children and grandchildren to attend. We are not a perfect place, but we are a committed group of adults who strive to provide the best educational experience for our students possible. I go back to Dr. Suess, as I bid you goodbye as you embrace summer break. Congratulations! (on a great year!) Today is your day You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! Monarch Waystations are places that provide resources necessary for monarch butterflies to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. Chris Ryan has been a dedicated employee of Lucia Mar Unified School District for 16 years. His skills and patience are unbeatable. Chris has stepped up by taking on more tasks and he’s really gone above and beyond what is being asked of him. He continues to be kind and courteous, giving it his all. He always makes anyone feel comfortable, even when the question seems to have a simple answer. Chris Ryan deserves recognition for his tireless efforts in the Lucia Mar Unified School District IT Department. So proud to have this hard worker as a part of TEAM Lucia Mar! Are you innovator? She was inspired by a class assignment in Mrs. Dwyer’s class. The result is Finding Joy. Finding Joy is the story of sad Sally who searches for a lost cat and rediscovers joy in life. The search opens her mind to sights, smells, and friendships. The hunt for what is lost opens her eyes to what she was truly missing. Jordyn got some very special help for the illustrations from world renowned Artist Steve Kalar. The book will be available on Amazon soon. Some significant projects slated for summer 2017: Oceano: rip/replace of nearly all underground utilities Fairgrove: fire alarm upgrade, rip/replace asphalt Nipomo El: rip/replace asphalt, furnace replacement Harloe: new roof on all permanent buildings; replace covered walkway, furnace replacement Lange: install shade structure Ocean View: replace old asphalt with permeable pavers Grover Beach: site work to prepare for placement of temporary housing Dana: sewer repairs, electrical service upgrade, turf renovation Branch: electrical service upgrade Shell Beach: furnace replacements Mesa: install shade structures, roofing Judkins: parking lot expansion, new fencing Paulding; new exterior paint, turf renovation Arroyo Grande High School: new windows, roofing repairs Nipomo High School: groundbreaking of new CTE facility Lopez High School: entrance redesign (already completed) District-wide: Final completion of WIFI project for all classrooms Measure I funding provides the bulk of the funding for the projects listed above. Upgrades | Repairs | Enhancements FACILITIES Teacher Induction Program (TIP) participants recently gathered with their mentors and administrators to celebrate completion of the TIP program. Thirty-five teachers completed the program this year, and reflected on their hard work and successes during their first two years in the classroom, at this annual event. Happy Last Day of School!!!

The 2016-2017 school year is now, for the most part, in the rear view mirror. A glance back would be a montage filled with engaged students, teachers who were learning new math curriculum, and staff who each and every day put Our Kids First!
