Calling local residents ...The Wanstead Village Directory is proud to support local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Lee Marquis, Editor
Welcome...Many of us will be turning our attention to the skies over Wanstead this month. Some may be on the look out for a certain annual red-suited visitor, but other stargazers will be contemplating the astronomical discoveries which were made by former local resident James Bradley. With observations made right here in Wanstead, in the 18th century, James Bradley was able to prove that the Earth orbits the Sun, something that had previously only been theorised. Dr John Fisher, curator of James Bradley and the Wanstead Astronomers – an exhibition currently on show at The Temple in Wanstead Park – outlines the story of Wanstead’s place in the history of science on pages 30-31.
James Bradley may not quite be a ghost of Christmas past, but Wanstead is certainly being visited by someone with a link to the Christmas spirits this month. Just over a week before the big day, the great-great-great granddaughter of Charles Dickens will be giving a talk at Wanstead Library. Lucinda Dickens Hawksley – a writer herself – will be discussing her new book about the life and times of the world-renowned author and provides an outline of the lesser know aspects of Dickens’ life on pages 12-13 – a must read for anyone planning to indulge in A Christmas Carol this festive season.
Wanstead’s past and present may provide much to be grateful for, but for many of our local shops it is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come that may be the most frightening of all. The threat of closure to independent businesses in high streets across the country is well reported, and Wanstead is no exception, with the likes of Westfield Stratford City enticing people away from local traders. With this in mind, the Wanstead Village Directory, in partnership with Wanstead based marketing company WOW Consulting, has launched the Wanstead Village App, a free smartphone application that brings unique loyalty offers from local businesses direct to your mobile phone (see page 6) – a gift to you that will truly keep on giving.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

with thanks to:
by supporting your local children’s hospice
Whilst Christmas is traditionally when we swap gifts, eat too many mince pies and sing carols it is also for many a time when the loss of a loved one is felt the most.
This is why, together with the actor Ray Winstone, a Patron of Haven House, we are asking people to donate to our campaign and thus make a significant difference to the children and families who receive care and support from Haven House.
This year we are hoping to raise £45k to fund the costs of one of our most experienced nurses for a year.
“Every year it costs £2.6 million to run Haven House Children’s Hospice. 70% of this needs to be raised through voluntary sources. This year Haven House has launched its Light up a Life Campaign to ask people from the local community to give as much as they can to help life limited children and their families.”

Following the opening of Westfield Stratford City – one of Europe’s largest urban shopping centres – local traders have begun to feel the effects of reduced footfall on the high streets.
In South Woodford, businesses are fighting back with a ‘save our high street’ campaign, which will see many of South Woodford’s shops offer discounts in the run up to Christmas.
In Wanstead, a range of local businesses are looking to secure
the loyalty of local shoppers with the Wanstead Village App, a new smartphone application which
tracks local purchases in order to unlock rewards. The app, which is the brainchild of local marketing expert Jan
Willis, is launched this month in partnership with the Wanstead Village Directory and is free to download.

Wanstead Festival 2012Next year’s Wanstead Festival may be timed to coincide with the end of the London 2012 Paralympic Games – which runs from 29 August to 9 September 2012 – in order to mark the end of Redbridge’s Olympic celebrations.
The London Borough of Redbridge has been awarded £50,000 from the Greater London Authority who are leading London’s 2012 ‘Look and Feel’ programme. Some of the money is expected to be spent on Olympic flags, banners and decorations for Wanstead High Street.
Staff and volunteers from Wanstead’s Oxfam Bookshop helped to raise £1,100 for the charity last month, following a quiz night at Leyton Sixth Form College.
It was the first public fundraising event to be organised by the newly formed East London Oxfam Fundraising Group.
Manager of the shop, Jill White, said: “The evening was great fun and we are thrilled that the group’s first event raised so much for Oxfam’s work to overcome poverty and suffering.”

Permit parking trial for three roads in Wanstead
A permit parking scheme will be introduced in three of Wanstead’s residential roads on an experimental basis for a period of twelve months, following the results of an earlier consultation on the issue which received sufficient public support. Residents
of Spratt Hall Road, Addison Road and Dangan Road will need to purchase parking permits as of February or March next year, when the trial is likely to get underway. A further consultation will take place before then to determine the days and hours when the restrictions will apply.
Safer Neighbourhood Team may be relocated
Detective Chief Superintendent Sue Williams, the Borough Commander of Redbridge, has confirmed that the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) may be relocated if suitable accommodation can be found. “Having met with local councillors
I agreed to look for a base that could house teams from Woodford and Wanstead in the west of the borough,” explained DCS Sue Williams. Many of the borough’s 21 SNTs share a sergeant and it is believed that moving to fewer bases will provide more effective supervision.
The Wanstead Parklands Community Project has been invited to make a bid under the Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Your Heritage’ programme – which offers grants of between £3,000 and £50,000 – following the success of previous lottery-funded work relating to Wanstead Park developments.
The decision follows a positive and constructive meeting with Epping Forest Superintendent Paul Thomson in September. The application is likely to be submitted early next year and will include plans for original research, including community archaeology.

All over the world, people still read novels by Charles Dickens – school children curse him, university students enthuse
about him and those adults who return to his books, years after having been “put off him” at school, invariably end up loving him.
All my life I’ve been aware of the phenomenon that was – and still remains – Charles Dickens. I grew up with Dickens as part of my name, knowing that he was my great-great-great grandfather. I don’t remember ever being told about him specifically, he was just always there, especially at Christmas. I remember watching A Christmas Carol on television and being taken to see Oliver! at the theatre.
He was born Charles John Huffam Dickens in Southsea, Portsmouth. The name Huffam was after his godfather, Christopher Huffam, who ran a chandlery shop close to Canary Wharf. His parents
were John and Elizabeth Dickens. John worked as a payroll clerk for the Navy – an ironic job for a man who found it impossible to manage his own income. Much of Dickens’ childhood was spent avoiding rent collectors and bailiffs, moving house with regularity every time John Dickens couldn’t afford to pay the rent. Charles was the second of eight children and the oldest boy in the family.
In 1824 John Dickens was arrested for debt and taken to the Marshalsea Prison in Southwark. The rest of the family, except for Charles and his older sister Fanny, also moved into the debtors’ prison.
At the age of 12, Charles moved into a miserable lodging house on his own and worked at Warren’s Blacking Factory on the Strand, which made boot-blacking. He would never forget the misery of this time – but it was also a time that fired his imagination, encouraged him to make the most
Discovering DickensAlmost 200 years after his birth, the name of Charles Dickens remains globally famous – but although most people know about Dickens the novelist, fewer people know about Dickens the campaigning journalist, Dickens the celebrated actor or Dickens the amateur detective. These are all things highlighted in a new book by his great-great-great-granddaughter, Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, who will be discussing the life and times of her distant relative at Wanstead Library this month

of his very acute powers of observation and gave him a unique insight into human behaviour. These months of living in lodgings, walking between his boarding house, his work and to visit his family in prison, formed the basis for his fiction.
After his family were released from prison, Charles went back to school, but when he was 15 his father got into debt again and Charles left school and took the first job he could. He worked as a legal clerk and as a court reporter and began writing short stories and articles, signing up as a reader at the British Library. At this time, however, he was more keen to be an actor than a writer, longing to join a travelling theatrical company. He did secure an audition but had to postpone it due to illness. Soon afterwards, he started to gain recognition as a writer. Charles’ love of the theatre never left him and he acted in amateur and semi-professional productions throughout his life, he also wrote plays and directed productions.
The first work of his fiction ever seen in print was published for free. He submitted it to a magazine, unsolicited, and felt that seeing his name in print was payment enough (his opinion on that matter would soon change!). His first works were published under the pseudonym “Boz” (his youngest brother Augustus’ family nickname). These short stories, or “sketches of daily life”, proved so popular with the readers that he was commissioned to write more works. After Sketches by Boz, he wrote the hugely successful The Pickwick Papers (under his own name). His breakthrough book was Oliver Twist, which had even Queen Victoria talking about him. By the time he finished Nicholas Nickleby he was a household name.
Charles Dickens wrote 15 novels, but he also worked tirelessly as a journalist and magazine editor. He was extremely prolific and, just as the new film Anonymous enquires who really wrote Shakespeare, within a few years of Dickens’ death, newspapers were publishing articles entitled “Who wrote Dickens?” Journalists could not believe one person could have written so much – this was while several of his children were still alive, all of whom could attest to the fact that he genuinely did write all those articles and novels.
In his campaigning journalism, as well as in his novels, Dickens sought to improve the lives of those in poverty, need and ignorance. He despised the rigidity of the class system, the extreme poverty he witnessed around him every day, domestic violence, the favouring of sons over daughters, the deep and damaging stigma attached to illegitimacy, the lack of understanding about
basic sanitary needs (something about which he was passionate) and the paucity of education for impoverished children and adults. He worked with a number of London’s most important educational and social reformers, philanthropists and educators.
Dickens had 10 children with his wife Catherine (née Hogarth). Initially the marriage was happy, but by its end, in 1858, it had become a tragic situation, in which Dickens behaved with emotional cruelty. From contemporary reports, including those of his children, it seems Dickens was undergoing a severe mental breakdown which made him act differently and nastily. It was certainly not his finest hour and although for many years fans of Dickens glossed over it, he is now being judged for it very harshly.
In an embarrassingly clichéd fashion, the author left his wife after over 20 years of marriage because he had begun an affair with an 18 year old actress, Ellen Ternan. Shortly after his marriage breakdown his health began to deteriorate; his children were convinced he was working himself to death. On 9 June 1870 he died of a stroke. He was only 58 years old and had plans to do so much more, including a proposed tour of Australia (where two of his sons were living). He was in the middle of writing The Mystery of Edwin Drood when he died – making it perhaps the greatest mystery story ever written.
Lucinda Dickens Hawksley will be discussing her book Charles Dickens (published by Andre Deutsch, £30) at Wanstead Library on Friday 16 December at 7.15pm (£5). Call 020 8708 7400

Trees make great gifts for people of all ages, and if planted this time of year they should establish very well. Traditionally,
the best planting time for trees and shrubs is November to March, as this is when the plants are dormant and won’t ‘notice’ that they have been moved.
Planting a tree is a momentous occasion and it will hopefully bring years of pleasure to you, your family and your neighbours – as long as you plant the right type that is. Choosing the right variety is extremely important, so see below for my favourites, which should do well in most gardens:
z Malus ‘Royalty’: deep burgundy leaves, pink spring blossom and red fruits.
z Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’: ornamental silvery leaved weeping ornamental pear.
z Amelanchier arborea ‘Robin Hill’: white blossom, fruits, with great autumn colour.
z Malus trilobata: oak-like leaves, stunning red in autumn.
z Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii’: a designer favourite, but short lived (50-60 years).
Tree huggers (as they used to be referred to) are thankfully no longer mocked, and the recent eco-movement has educated us to the benefits of planting trees, both for their environmental benefits and also their aesthetic appeal. Research shows that the presence of established trees can actually increase the value of the roads we live on, as well as making us feel generally healthier.
Plant only if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Soak the roots in water for 30 minutes while you dig a large square hole twice the width of the pot – no cheating here, as you’ll get caught out in years to come. Fork over the bottom of the planting hole and lower the tree to the bottom. Backfill, adding some bone meal and well rotted compost. Ensure the tree is planted no deeper than it was in its pot, and firm it down. Water, and attach to a wooden stake with a plastic tree tie – easy! So go on, give someone a tree this Christmas and you never know, it could be a present which lasts for generations.
A tree is for life …It’s true, a tree is a gift in more ways than one, but is it for life? Well, if you choose the right variety it could be, and we’re not talking Christmas trees here. Lee Bestall explains
Jobs for December: z Brush off any snow from conifers and structures, such as greenhouses.
z Make sure you feed the birds daily and give them fresh clean water.
z Order seeds and plug plants for next year.
z Tidy out the shed and clean propagation trays and pots.
z Sort through your old stored seeds and review the successes of the year.

Ros and Joe Toller, both in their early 30s, are running 10km for Children’s Cancer Recovery Project, a programme run by
the charity Cancer Recovery Foundation. At the time of writing they have raised over £200 which will be used to buy toys, games and craft materials to help play therapists in hospitals comfort and distract children from their fear of treatment and keep them motivated. The money will also help families caring for a child with cancer pay their bills, easing the pressure so they can focus on their child’s recovery as well as helping to save lives in developing countries by providing much needed medicines.
The run was Ros’s idea; as a GP she has seen first hand how devastating a cancer diagnosis can be. “I saw the advert for the Santa run in the paper; what a great idea to get in the mood for Christmas and such a worthwhile cause. I was really moved reading all the thankyou messages on the website from the children and families Children’s Cancer Recovery Project supports – they do a great job. I am more than happy to run around in a Santa suit for a few hours if it helps create some happier Christmas memories for children and young people with cancer.”
“The support from Wanstead locals has been amazing,” adds Joe. “We have only lived here for less than a year and the training for the Santa run has been a good way of getting to know the neighbours, who have all been amazingly friendly and supportive to us since we moved here.”
Both Ros and Joe admit that they aren’t fitness enthusiasts, but they created their own training programme for the run and stuck to it. Joe said that he was surprised about how much he now enjoys running. “I wasn’t keen at first – I am no couch potato but getting up early and running in the cold isn’t my thing. I got into it though and I am now hoping to get a fast time for the circuit on the day. A statistic that I read on Cancer Recovery’s website is that many cancers could be avoided by making healthier lifestyle choices. That struck a cord with
me and hopefully this is a step in the right direction for me getting fitter.”
Ros and Jo will be running with Hugs the bear as their mascot. The Children’s Cancer Recovery Project have made Hugs, who features in their logo, into a cuddly toy and will be sending him out in hospital gift bags this Christmas – a Hugs for a hug. They will also be launching the Hugs range of bears online with proceeds from sales supporting the gift bag programme.
Santa’s coming to townWanstead couple Joe and Ros Toller are just two of a cast of thousands of Santas who will be running at the annual DoItforCharity Santa Run in Greenwich Park this month. Claire Trevethan, from the Children’s Cancer Recovery Project, tells their story

Wanstead: Good with science
Wanstead Village Directory30
After I married my wife in her home village of Sherborne, in the Windrush Valley in the Cotswolds, I soon learned
that James Bradley, the third Astronomer Royal, had been raised
there, attending Westwood’s
Grammar School
in
nearby Northleach, as did my wife. After buying our house near Wanstead Flats we discovered that Bradley had also lived in Wanstead for many years after leaving Sherborne, being the nephew of James Pound, the Rector of Wanstead. This amazing coincidence led me to seek Bradley’s biography, but since a memoir had been published by Stephen Peter Rigaud in 1832 nothing of real note had been written since.
I decided to write a biography of Bradley myself. However, my only acquaintance with the history
of science was as an undergraduate of the Open University, so I wrote to an academic in
Cambridge. I was met with much kindness and support and was helped by some
of the country’s leading historians of science. My years of research at
Cambridge University Library and at the Bodleian Library in Oxford led to working for a master’s degree at Imperial College, followed by a doctorate on the work of Bradley.
After many years of work I realised that the remarkable achievements of Bradley at Greenwich, Oxford and initially at Wanstead had never been fully recognised. He is one of the great unsung heroes of science. In his own lifetime he was recognised as the finest astronomer on Earth. After his death in 1762 the then director of the Paris Observatory asserted
that Bradley’s discoveries of the aberration of light and of the
nutation of the Earth’s axis were the most important astronomical
discoveries of the 18th century.
Most people walk past the Co-op in Wanstead and barely give it a second glance, yet on that site there once stood a modest house in which a series of observations were made which transformed the worldview of modern science. Dr John Fisher, curator of an astronomy exhibition currently on show at The Temple in Wanstead Park, outlines the work of a local unsung hero of science

Wanstead: Good with science
It is easy to understand why Bradley’s achievements have not been widely acknowledged, for his discoveries demand some understanding of astronomical technicalities, but the consequences of his discoveries made in that modest dwelling on the site of the present Co-op were far reaching. The first, the aberration of light, made in 1728, was the first universally accepted observational evidence of the motion of the Earth.
Ask most people with any interest in the subject at all who first proved that the Earth revolved around the Sun and the answers usually swing between Copernicus and Galileo. In truth both men conjectured that the Earth moved, and indeed Galileo was put on trial by the Holy Inquisition for asserting it. By the following century most astronomers believed that the Earth revolved around the Sun but no one was able to prove it. It was Bradley working with his suspended telescope at his aunt’s house in Wanstead who discovered the phenomenon that established once and for all that the Earth did indeed move.
The aberration of light is difficult to explain without using technicalities. Over the years I have used the expedient of an umbrella to show people how aberration works. Imagine rain falling vertically on a windless day. You hold your umbrella directly over your head. However, if you walk you will have to tilt your umbrella forward. The faster you move the greater the tilt. As the Earth moves around the Sun light from the stars is likewise ‘slanted’ just in the same way as rainfall appears to be slanted as you walk into the rain. What Bradley discovered is that every object in the sky is shifted in the direction the Earth moves as it travels around the Sun, every star travelling in an annual ellipse. Stars shift their position by up to 40 seconds of arc a year.
Bradley’s discovery of the nutation of the Earth’s axis was even more remarkable. As the Moon revolves around the Earth the plane of its orbit is tilted 8 degrees from the plane of the Earth’s equator. The Earth is slightly oblate, wider at the equator than across the poles. The Moon tugs at the Earth’s equator causing the Earth to wobble. The technical term to describe this wobble is nutation. It is a tiny movement amounting to less than a second of arc a year. Yet
remarkably, Bradley observed it for twenty years before publishing his discovery paper in 1748. It established the accuracy of Newton’s universal law of gravitation with a degree of precision previously undreamed of.
In his work in Wanstead, Bradley established the truth of the Copernican theory which Galileo had been placed on trial for supporting. He firmly established the truth of Newton’s physics within the limits of what could be observed at that time. Bradley’s lectures on experimental philosophy at Oxford are the finest on Newtonian science during the 18th century. I am presently working on these lectures together with a notebook written by one of his students in 1754. Whilst Bradley worked at Wanstead and taught in Oxford he also reformed and re-equipped the Royal Observatory and made the finest series of observations of the entire century.
The Wanstead Astronomers exhibition is free to attend and runs until 9 January 2012 at The Temple in Wanstead Park from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. For more information, call the Epping Forest Visitor Centre on 020 8508 0028. To find out more about astronomy in general, the North East London Astronomical Society meet at Wanstead House on the third Sunday of every month, call 020 8550 6549 for details.

I can hear you say: “Not for me... I’m too old for university!” – but you are mistaken. The U3A refers to the original definition for university,
meaning a collective of people who gather to learn together and from one another. And the third age? Well this refers to the period of time after the first age of childhood dependence and scholastic learning and the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. In a nutshell, the first age is one of growth and development, the second age is one of employment and earning and the third age is one of rest and retirement.
The U3A is a growing nationwide network of self-help educational activities organised by, and for, third-age people. The original Universite du Troisieme Age was founded in Toulouse, France in 1972 and the first UK based University of the Third Age started in Cambridge in 1981. As of December 2011 there are over 825 U3As in the UK with a total membership of over 273,000.
All U3As are self-funded charities that are steered by a committee of local volunteers who help create, organise and manage monthly meetings, interest groups and other social activities required by the members.
U3As are about involvement in learning new things, expanding horizons, sharing skills and experiences, making new friends, helping others to learn and accepting new challenges to show that age need be no barrier to learning or to helping others to learn and to enjoy. The U3A is not about study and qualifications, it’s about members improving the quality of their lives by getting together to share interests and join in activities – with no age limits.
The Wanstead and Woodford U3A inaugural meeting – which will take place on 10 January 2012 – will be free to attend (there will be a small charge for tea/coffee and cake) and at the meeting you will have the opportunity to hear more about this new U3A, meet the committee members, hear about the current interest groups we have available and, of course, join the Wanstead and Woodford
U3A. An annual membership fee applies, but this is kept as a low as possible to facilitate membership for retired people.
For the cost of your annual membership you get: access to the local U3A monthly meetings (programme of speakers to be announced); regular newsletters from both the W&W U3A and the National U3A office; as well as access to as many interest groups as you can fit into your time. You can also offer to become a group convener if there is a group you would like to start that is not currently offered. The groups we will be launching with include: boules; bridge; card making; cooking for one; creative writing; enjoying opera; IT for beginners; local walks; Rummikub; scrabble; scrapbooking; singing for fun; and Spanish.
Is there something you could offer or would like to do? Then why not come along to the meeting and find out what the U3A is all about and see how you can participate.
University of Later LifeThere are no age restrictions when it comes to learning, explains Karen Laverock, Chairman of a new local branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A), which launches in the New Year
The Wanstead and Woodford U3A launches at 10am on Tuesday 10 January 2012 at the Woodford Memorial Hall, High Road, South Woodford. For more information, visit www.wwu3a.co.uk or call 020 8505 5224

Family-run Cambridge Nursing Home currently looks after 49 service users from across the area and is already a local
champion, as Tayvanie Nagendran, the care home’s operations director, explains: “We have always tried to play a role in the local area – we welcome volunteers from local colleges, employ local tradesmen and support the local community. But we want to do more.”
From April 2012, the care home will welcome the public into its new activity centre, which will house an internet resource room, library, training room, hair salon and spa, with most services free to use. The centre’s training room will also be used to provide NVQs and diplomas, also open to the general public.
Training is an important part of the care home which, unlike many other homes, refuses to employ agency staff. “We don’t use agency staff. It isn’t our policy to do so and we never have done. It’s been a conscious decision – we prefer to train our staff in-house and leverage our management staff’s expertise,” comments Tayvanie.
Most of the care home’s staff – 40 employees – have worked for the family business for years. “Many of our nurses started off as trainees and have since completed their qualifications on-the-job,” she continues. “The home houses the Centre for Health and Social Care Qualifications, a registered City & Guilds centre, as well as having links with the University of Hertfordshire, the University of Buckinghamshire and the Open University, which gives us the opportunity to train our staff formally.”
Local school children and college students also volunteer at the home, gaining valuable experience in the care sector, as well as fulfilling their Duke of Edinburgh Award commitments. “It is so important for local children to be offered opportunities in their local area, and we want to play a part,” says Tayvanie, a former Duke of Edinburgh participant herself. “Many of the college students are hopeful medical students, so volunteering at our home gives them an extra boost when applying for university.” The new activity centre will facilitate
this, giving the volunteers better resources to interact with service users as well as people from the local community.
Cambridge Nursing Home operates an open-door policy, where visitors are encouraged to come regularly, even if just for five minutes. “Because the majority of our service users are from north and north-east London, most visitors come to the home every day,” says Tayvanie. “By improving the facilities, we hope the home will become even more welcoming, and encourage visitors to do more with the service users.”
While Tayvanie admits that the changes in the care home have been disruptive for staff, service users and visitors, she hopes the positive outcomes and better service will make it worthwhile. “I really want to thank all the staff for all their support. They’re part of the fabric of the home, what makes Cambridge Nursing Home special. We really want to help as many people in the community as possible, whether they’re service users or locals. These are exciting times for Wanstead,” she concludes.
Caring for WansteadCambridge Nursing Home in Wanstead is set to become a community hub following a radical transformation. Jason Hesse reports

Walking to Health walks in Wanstead started just over a year ago, initially due to the members of the Wanstead
Place Surgery Patient Participation Group. It was agreed that I would undertake the two-day training course – which was run by the Redbridge Sport and Physical Activity Team at Fairlop Waters – in order to carry out this activity. The first day covered the organisational side of a health walks, with practical tests, followed by a certificated first aid course on the second day. Recently I have been joined by Sam Wesil, which will enable the walks in Wanstead to develop. We are both volunteers and enjoy walking and seeing others develop.
Our walks are free, with people joining us to improve their health, reduce the risk of various medical conditions, learn about the local area or just to have a chat with fellow walkers. “The walk encourages and gives the incentive for people to walk and socialise” says Connie, a member of the group.
For slower and less-able walkers, including those who use mobility aids, we operate a short walk around the war memorial in Wanstead High Street and then, depending on ability, around Christchurch Green.
For stronger walkers, we often start by walking around Christchurch Green and continue on for up to one hour. Places we have walked to recently include: beyond Eagle Pond; South Woodford; The Temple in Wanstead Park; and Leytonstone. Some people who join us also belong to other groups, such as U3A, Redbridge Ramblers or West Essex Ramblers. This is always useful as we get to know what is happening in other groups in the area.
Walking is actually in my blood as my mum is in charge of the Havering U3A rambling group, my dad participates in Monday morning walks and my mother-in-law attends the U3A walks around London. I am asked every week how the walk went, how many people attended and if specific people came along.
There are many other walking groups providing an assortment of walks within the Redbridge area. Walking to Health itself also offers other walks of various grades at different locations, including walks in Wanstead Park and Fairlop Waters.
I am supported centrally by the Sport and Physical Activity team who are based at Wanstead Leisure Centre. I send in our weekly registers and details of any new walkers. Apart from keeping records up to date, they also develop new walks, train new walk leaders and advise of new initiatives for walking activities in general.
The Walk to Health group meet every Saturday at 10.30am outside Wanstead Place Surgery, 45 Wanstead Place, Wanstead. All walks are free of charge. Participants are asked to arrive earlier for their first walk. Call Vision/Redbridge Council’s Sport and Physical Activity team on 020 8708 0952 for more information on this and other walks in the Redbridge area.
Local residents meet at Wanstead Place Surgery ready for their weekly Walk to Health walk
Last year a group of patients from Wanstead Place Surgery decided to form a local walking club. One year on the group leader, Paul Turner, explains the health and social benefits that walking can bring
