Message from the President Dear Members:
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful, and safe holiday season and that your New
Year is filled with all things good for you and your family. It is my pleasure on behalf of our current Board of Directors to thank the
outgoing board members – Kevin Sullivan (President), Todd Pohlman (Vice President), Mike Conway (Membership Chair), and Bill Licata
(Personnel Chair). Their leadership over the past three years has been invaluable – we appreciate your commitment to the Club.
We would like to give a warm welcome our new Directors: Chris Tryjankowski, Terry Greene, Ken Kirst, and Peter Augustine.
The Club under the leadership of our General Manager, Mike Karnath, along with his management team, had a most successful
year. This could not have been accomplished without the dedication and commitment of the clubhouse staff – we thank you all for the
outstanding service you provide throughout the year.
Gale Hultquist and his staff have been very busy implementing our tree management program. This program will improve our
turf and enhance the beauty and views of our golf course. The “interim” tag has been removed from Marc Rosa’s title as he is now our
Head Golf Professional. Marc is a great addition to Wanakah and we are excited to see what this upcoming season holds.
While our membership is at an all-time high as we begin the New Year, our objective is to reach our full membership capacity
of 310 golfing members. Please continue to spread the word to family and friends who would have an interest in joining the Wanakah
family. A strong membership is vital to the financial success of the Club. With that said, please remember your Club for special
occasions – no event is too big or too small.
The Activities Committee is hard at work planning a variety of events with something for everyone. If you haven’t had the
opportunity to participate in the past, or are new to the Club, I encourage you to get involved. From golf tournaments to couples
tennis, Tuesday night Men’s golf league to wine/beer tasting dinners, or Wednesday Women’s golf league to bocce ball, or Wii bowing -
there is an activity for everyone.
As recently stated in Mike Karnath’s Year-End letter, we anticipate the work to be completed on holes 12, 14, 15 and 17
before the golf season is in full swing…keep your fingers crossed for an early spring. Also, the marcite on the pool is being replaced and
will greatly enhance its appearance. Be sure to plan on using the pool with your children or grandchildren this summer.
I am looking forward to seeing you on January 23rd at the closing party, and throughout the year!

Important USGA Rule Changes for the 2016 Golf Season
Section 5-1e
A revision to this rule will deem solo rounds unacceptable for
handicap posting purposes beginning on January 1, 2016.
Rule: 14-1b
While making a stroke, a player may not anchor the club (i)
“directly” or (ii) indirectly through the use of an “anchor point.”
Penalty: Match Play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.
Permitted:
Traditional Grip with
mid-length putter
Prohibited: The club is
intentionally anchored
against the player’s body
Prohibited:
The players
gripping hand is
intentionally
held against the
body
Permitted: The
club can be in
contact with the
forearm during
the stroke
Frequently asked questions:
Can my club “grandfather” individual golfers who used an
anchored stroke before January 1, 2016?
No. Wanakah Country Club is a USGA Member Club and must abide by
the USGA Rules of Golf. This would be a waiver of a Rule of Golf for
particular players, and as such it would be impermissible under Rule 33-
1. This would also create an unfair advantage among players in
competition.
Can scores be posted under the USGA Handicap System if the
player anchored throughout the round?
No. The USGA Handicap System permits scores to be posted only when
they are played under the rules of Golf. The purpose of the Handicap
System is to reflect each golfer’s potential ability relative to that of the
other golfers, and that purpose would be eliminated if some golfers who
maintain a Handicap Index followed Rule 14-1b and others didn’t.
Club Closing and Re-opening Dates: The last day of operation and last day to satisfy your January spending minimum is Saturday, January 23rd at our Closing Party.
We will be re-opening starting on March 24th for Dinners only. We will be open on Easter Sunday, March 27th for our Easter Buffet.
All Club Events apply to your monthly minimum.
