1.0 Introduction

In 2012 Walthamstow Cricket Club celebrated its 150th anniversary and has spent over 100 years at

its home ground, Bulk Walk, Greenway Avenue, Walthamstow.

The Club consider itself to be at the heart of the local community and aims to provide cricket

facilities for all ages. We engage with local stakeholders as well as outside organisations wishing to

use our facilities.

Our Cricket Committee is seeking sponsorship from local companies to support fundraising for new

equipment, ground upkeep and investment in our colt section which will help the ongoing success of

this community focussed Club.

We believe that there are real opportunities for local businesses to demonstrate its support of the

local community through our Club, our website and our open days and that in turn the Club can offer

its facilities for the benefit of companies, its clients and staff.

2.0 Brief Background Information for Walthamstow Cricket Club

WCC was founded in 1862 and have been at the current site at Greenway Avenue for over 100 years

becoming a multi- sports club in 1925 when the tennis section was formed (originally grass courts

now all weather). A squash section was started in the 1970’s and continues to thrive. The club is

open all year round and has an active social section from all sports.

Over the years we have had members who have played senior county cricket for Essex. In addition

we have produced many colts of both sexes who have represented county and district age group

sides with distinction. We field four teams in the Shepherd Neame Essex League.

Our colts section is flourishing and now has over 90 members, the highest it has been for some years.

As a Club we have always recognised the need to be part of the local community and engage with

local key stakeholders. We currently have a number of outside organisations using our facilities (e.g.

Brownies, Girl Guides and local schools) and try to rent out the ground for corporate hire during the

week to offset our overheads. Recent refurbishment of the pavilion was facilitated through a

charitable grant and as a result more modern features were installed to allow the physically disabled

better access.

The cricket section is run by the cricket committee. Our primary aim in to uphold the spirit of cricket

and to ensure the successful running of the section. A lot of our time is spent trying to raise money

to support the section, its activities and the upkeep of the ground and equipment. The section is

chaired by Del Steward.

Cricket Chairman – Derek (Del) Steward

Del is an extremely well respected member of the Club and previously

represented the 1st XI in the 1960’s and 70’s. He has been actively

delivering cricket to local schools for many years and has managed the

Waltham Forest District sides for 47 years. In 2009 he was awarded the

ICC Centenary Medal for Services to Grassroots Cricket and in 2010 the

Daily Telegraph Unsung Hero of British Sport title. He champions the Spirit

of Cricket and our motto, “Fellowship is Life”.

The committee is drawn together from all levels of the cricket club and

meets on a monthly basis to monitor and improve all areas of the Club

performance.

3.0 Colts Cricket is at the Centre of our Club

Colts CricketWalthamstow CC has a thriving Colts section which provides the backbone for the successfulfuture of the club and a legacy for local cricket within a diverse community. Our qualifiedcoaches look after up to 80 children at our training sessions each week. We run teams for theage groups listed below, who as well as playing weekly friendlies, compete in the stated cupcompetitions:

Under 11- Haydn Davies Cup

Under 13- Peter Coe Cup, Len Steniford Cup, Met Board Cup

Under 15- Cox and Kings Cup, Met Board Cup

Under 16- Essex County Cricket Club Matchplay Competition

The colts play teams from Essex and North East London and as they develop, go on to play forour senior teams. Several have represented Essex, London Schools and the District in recentyears. Waltham Forest is an area with a higher than average proportion of low income andsingle parent families. One of the greatest benefits of colt cricket at Walthamstow is thatchildren play sport rather than spend unsupervised time on the streets. By offering childrenthe opportunity to play friendly and then league cricket, we feel that we provide positiveyouth engagement and help to grow a legacy for cricket in Waltham Forest. Most coltmembers are dependent on the Club as they live too far from alternative teams given thatrelatively few of their parents can drop them off and collect them.

Representative CricketWe have provided junior and more recently senior players for Essex representative teams in the

recent past. In recent seasons we have had two girls represent Essex CCC, both going on to

England training camps and one representing the England Development XI as well as playing for

Australian state side Tasmania. Nigel Bloch has represented the Essex 50+ and 60+ team and

several of our colts represented their respective age groups at county level and district level.

Clubmark

We are proud to say that as of 28/05/2012 Walthamstow CC holds an ECB “Clubmark” accreditation.

The ECB describes Clubmark as:

“The ECB continues to work with Sport England on the pioneering club accreditation scheme

‘Clubmark’ to develop a vibrant and healthy club cricket infrastructure.

By registering to work towards ECB Clubmark, clubs join a growing number of cricket clubs across

England and Wales that are prioritising junior development, creating a benchmark for high quality

community club cricket.

ECB Clubmark gives clubs an opportunity to write and implement new procedures as well as

acknowledge existing practices. Cricket clubs are required to present evidence and demonstrate

implementation across four different themes, culminating in the production of a Club Development

Plan.

The four themes are:

* Duty of Care and Safeguarding Children

* The Cricket Programme

* Knowing your club and its Community – One Game

* Club Management”

This demonstrates the club has been recognised in its ability to safely coach and develop children’s

cricket and provided cricket to the community whilst actively promoting the spirit of cricket. This is

something the club is very proud of and underpins the values of the club.

Indoor Cricket and Winter NetsThroughout the winter we have entered two senior league teams and six colts’ teams into the

indoor Metropolitan Cricket League. We have also had weekly training sessions at Peter May

Sports Centre for both seniors and colts. This keeps the club spirit and training going during the

off-season.
