“J’ai mal à …”In French, to say if you have a pain, ache or are

unwell, you use the phrase “J’ai mal à” followed by a word for the part of the body.

However, there is a rule of grammar that must be applied because of the word “à”

Notice how these phrases from the first exercise are slightly different…

The word “à” changes depending on whether the part of the body word, a noun, is either masculine, feminine,

plural or begins with a vowel.

Remember…

Masculine words

Feminine words

Plural words

Le , Un

La , Une

Les , Des

Words starting with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u and silent h)

L’

This is how the grammar rule works…

Masculine words…J’ai mal à + le bras

When à is followed by le, they MUST combine together and change to the word au.

So this becomes… J’ai mal au bras.

Feminine words…J’ai mal à + la tête

When à is followed by la, there is no change.

So this becomes… J’ai mal à la tête

Plural words…J’ai mal à + les oreilles

When à is followed by les, they MUST combine together and change to the word aux.

So this becomes… J’ai mal aux oreilles.

Words that begin with a vowel…

J’ai mal à + l’estomac

When à is followed by l’, there is no change.

So this becomes… J’ai mal à l’estomac

Excuses excuses!!Below is an email saying why someone can’t come to school. Copy and complete with the pictures in French, then translate into English.

Using this as a model, write an excuse message of your own. For example, a reason why you can’t play football or go out with your friends.
