Principal’s News Welcome Back Welcome back to teacher staff and families to our last term for the year. Onward with Honour Following on from last term I have again encouraged conversation about what ‘Onward with Honour means to the students, and this week our 5/6 class has given their views. I believe our school motto means to be that the students of Wallumbilla State School are respectful and considerate to others, while also achieving their best and having high ambitions. Summing it all up ‘Onward with Honour’ is the Advance Australia Fair of Wallumbilla State School In my perspective, Onward with Honour means to push forward even when times are tough with honour. To strive to do the very best you can to have respect for yourself and others, have pride, leadership, honesty, positivity, humbleness and high expectations. This is so our fellow students and class mates can always rely on you. This is what I believe ‘Onward with Honour’ means to us. In my perspective, Onward with Honour, means to have high expectations and ambition for the future as well as striving to encourage and assist those in need. Also it is to go out into the world with open arms and hopefulness, to be reliable and the best you can be. That’s what I think it means, to go ‘Onward with Honour’. Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to parents who attended meetings with teachers last week and were able to undertake discussions as to student progress in the last term and to consider strategies to use to encourage students to set goals and to work towards achieving these. Please feel free to contact our school office to make arrangements for scheduling of additional teacher meetings (should you wish to follow up any further matters associated with student progress) during term 4. End of Semester I have spoken to both staff and students about how busy term 4 will be with both completion of curriculum and extra-curricular activities being undertaken, as well as preliminary planning for 2020. Secondary students have been reminded to use their Assessment Planners and staff have been given term 4 calendars which details all know activities and meetings that will be occurring. The secret to working consistently through all requirements is to prioritise and to undertake all requirements in “bite sized” pieces. If this approach is undertaken it will hopefully minimise stress or anxiety and enable all required tasks to be completed in a timely and effective manner. Our aim is to have a very successful end of year and have the ability to celebrate all of the many successes of 2019. Eisteddfod- Best wishes to our Primary students who will be travelling to Roma on Wednesday and Thursday this week to participate in the Eisteddfod. In previous years, our students have always participated and successfully and this has been a worthwhile and enjoyable activity to participate in. Transitions As we start to prepare for the new school year in 2020, we intend to hold transition days to enable students intending to enrol with our school to enjoy the new routines and to make new friends. We will hold a Year 6 into Secondary school transition on Monday 2 December with students joining with our current Year 6 students as they prepare for having discrete subjects and learning areas, as well as multiple teachers. For our prospective 2020 Prep class, we will invite young people who will turn 5 years of age by 30 June 2020 to join us each Wednesday afternoon from 1.30-3.00pm, starting in week 6 and concluding in week 9. Further information about the practical aspects of this transition as well as enrolment packs are available from our school office. A reminder please that proof of student’s birth date is required prior to acceptance of enrolment Responsible Behaviour Management Plan During Term 3, we have been actively reviewing our RBMP. We thank our interested staff and parents who volunteered to be part of our BM subcommittee. We have now collated a draft RBMP and would like to present this through general Business to our next P&C meeting on Thursday 24 October. We are seeking widespread and thoughtful feedback to inform our RBMP for endorsement in Term 4. Hard copies of this draft document are available at the school office and we encourage parents to collect a copy and consider its contents as to clarity and fairness for all members in our school community. P&C The next P&C meeting will be held next Thursday the 24 th October in the library at 5.30pm. Awards Night Can students who received perpetual trophies last year please return to the office as soon as possible in order for the school to get organised for this year’s awards. Young people - Support for worries

By Angie Gorry – School Based Youth Health Nurse (SBYHN)

Children and adolescents experience stress and worry about

problems just as adults do. For young people though, they don’t

always have the life experience to keep their worries or

problems in perspective.

Young people may struggle with how to communicate their

problems or worries – Who do I tell? Will they think I am silly?

What if I get in trouble? Will they tell someone else? This is

embarrassing!

As parents we always hope that our children feel comfortable

and able to come to us with their worries, big or small.

Especially as young people reach puberty, it is developmentally

normal for them to look to people for their worries – especially

around health, relationships, mental health (stress, anxiety, or

depression) or even fighting with parents.

It is important for everyone but especially young people to know

who their supports are. Have a conversation with your child

today – If you couldn’t talk to me/us about something that was

worrying you – who could you go to? (5 support options is ideal)

Ideas for possible support people in your child’s life:

Home:

Family – Mum, Dad, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles,

Cousins

Friends – both school and family friends

Guardians – safe adults

TYME Tour

At the end of last term our junior and senior bands travelled to Toowoomba to take part in the annual TYME festival. Our students performed very well and looked very smart in their new band shirts. Qld Symphony Orchestra (QSO)

Last Wednesday evening our senior band had the privilege to perform in front of the QSO and the Roma community at the Roma Cultural Centre. The students played very well. Thursday the students were then invited to undertake a workshop with the QSO in Wallumbilla, where they were given some invaluable tips from the QSO group.

QLD Police Pipes and Drums Band

This morning Wallumbilla and Yuleba Primary School Students as well as members from the community were treated to a performance by the QLD Police Pipes and Drums Band. The performance “Cops and Kilts”, covered a wide range of musical styles and saw the audience clap and sing along to renditions of The Limbo Rock, Scotland the Brave and The Mexican Hat Dance. Chess Club has recommenced for Term 4 and was a popular choice many students during the heat today. Students are continuing to build on their skills and are enjoying teaching other new rules as they learn them. Mrs Grainger

Pre- Prep 2019 Our 2019 Pre-Prep Program at Wallumbilla State School will commence Wednesday 13th of November from 1:30pm until 3:00pm. The Pre-Prep students are invited to attend, with their parents/carers, to join in for an afternoon of learning with our Prep students. This is a great opportunity for the Pre-Preps to become familiar and comfortable within the school environment, to form friendships and meet their 2020 Prep teacher, Mrs Dorrstein. While the Pre-Prep students are participating in the activities, parents/carers are welcome to join in with the group or sit back and relax in our library with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. We will also be running information sessions in the library during this time. An attendance note will be sent home this week to be completed and returned by 25th October 2019. If you know of any families that are planning on enrolling a child in Prep in 2020 please encourage them to contact the school office. We are all very excited to meet and get to work with the upcoming Prep students of 2020! See you then.
