John 11:17-45 17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. 20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. 24 Martha saith

unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. 28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

house of dates. (1.) The Revised Version in John 1:28 has this word instead of Bethabara, on the authority of the oldest manu-scripts. It appears to have been the name of a place on the east of Jordan. (2.) A village on the south-eastern slope of the Mount of Olives (Mark 11:1), about 2 miles east of Jerusalem, on the road to Jericho. It derived its name from the number of palm-trees which grew there. It was the residence of Lazarus and his sisters. It is frequently mentioned in connection with memorable inci-dents in the life of our Lord (Matt. 21:17; 26:6; Mark 11:11, 12; 14:3; Luke 24:50; John 11:1; 12:1). It is now known by the name of el-Azariyeh, i.e., "place of Lazarus," or simply Lazariyeh. Seen from a distance, the village has been described as "remarkably beautiful, the perfection of retirement and repose, of seclusion and lovely peace." Now a mean village, containing about twenty families.

JESUS RAISES LAZARUS John is telling us what happened in a town called Bethany. This is where three of his very close friends lived. A man named Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Lazarus had become sick. They sent some one to tell Jesus that Lazarus was sick and needed to come quickly and heal Lazarus. Jesus did not come. He waited four days before coming. Lazarus was all ready dead and had been in the grave four days. Lazarus’ family was so sad and many people had come from Je-rusalem to comfort them. Mary and Martha were not only sad but also hurt and angry with their good friend Jesus. The knew that Je-sus could of healed Lazarus if he had come in time and their brother would not have died. They could not understand why Jesus did not come. Now word came to them that Jesus and his disciples were com-ing. Martha got up and went to meet Jesus. But Mary stayed in the house. Her anger keep her from even saying hello or any kind of a greeting to her good friend, also her lord Jesus. She lashed out at Jesus. If you had been hear my brother would not have dyed! Why Jesus? Why did you not come? Martha knew Jesus. In her sor-row, she forgot who Jesus really was. She forgot that he was her Lord and master, she failed to speak to Him in the way that she should have. Never the less the longer Martha is in the presence of Jesus she begins to understand. Martha finely said “But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.” Jesus said to her your brother will rise again. Martha still did not understand 100% what Jesus was saying to her. She thought that Jesus was talking about the resurrection in the last

day. Jesus speaks to her again I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me though he were dead, yet will he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this. With the power of Jesus’ words and the look in his eyes, Mar-tha understood. She said Yes Lord I believe that you are the Christ, the son of the living God. The one who would come into the world. Martha left Jesus, went to her sister Mary, and told her that Je-sus was calling for her. She got up quickly and went to meet Jesus. Mary was hurt and angry just like Martha, but her response to Je-sus was different from Martha’s response. Mary fell down, held Je-sus feet, and worshiped him. Then she asked him the same ques-tion as Martha. Why Jesus did, you not come sooner? Lazarus would not have dyed if you had been hear.! Jesus saw the tears of Mary and the people with her. He was touched in his heart and cried with them. Then he asked where lave you laid him. They took Jesus to the place where Lazarus was berried. Jesus told them to roll away the stone. Their faith was not strong enough to believe that Jesus could raise the dead. Martha said Jesus he has been dead four days Lazarus smells by not. It is too late. Jesus paid no attention to her words. He just said again with more authority rollway the stone. They obeyed and Jesus com-manded Lazarus come forth. He came out of the grave still rapped in the grave cloths. Many people witnessed this great miracle. No one could say it did not happen. Many believed that Jesus was the Christ and wanted to follow him. However, many went back to Je-rusalem and told the Pharisees what Jesus had done. They were afraid that all the people would follow Jesus and they would loose their power. They set their minds to kill Jesus.
